Dog Park Blues! Well my DH and I recently moved into these new condos, well down the street ( about a mile 1/2) they built this wonderful dog park. They have 3, a small dog park, big dog park and then another little one..I walked Peanut to the park and no one was there so I took him in....ergh all he did was sniff everything and lift his leg on everything!!! I mean everything!!!! He loves loves to run in the grass...when we are at anyother place in the grass that no dogs have marked he will run and play with his ball with me.. When we are at the dog park all he does is sniff and pee on everything!! I try to play with him and he will do it once and then sniff something and ignore me!!! Then we went over to the small dog park..he acted the same way lol Then this older lady came in with a maltese, Well the maltese stayed over by the owner, wanted nothing to do with Peanut, then this other lady came in with like 3 chiuahhas...one of the chi's ran right up to Peanut and snipped at him!! Luckly Peanut is fast and moved away!!! I am starting to get sick of the dog park, I wish he would run and play, but he doesn't and it happens everytime we go!! lol Do you guys think maybe the dog park isnt for peanut?? DH HATES the dog park he says "all it is, is letting your dogs run around in other dogs piss and poo!!" ergh! I am frustrated.. Do any of your furbabies act like Peanut?? or is Peanut a special one!! I see"Brister" Jackson in his pics and he LOVES the dog park!! |
You are not alone:p when Rockie goes to the dog park he is all over the place marking. He zooms around like a enegized bunny:) He really enjoys the dog parks. lt sounds as though your furbutt has fun there too. Rockie likes too play with some of the pups and avoids the dogs that are too aggressive sometimes. Their are some that sit by their owners and don't want to play too, l guess they have their days when they just want to watch and not play. |

we don't have dog parks here and used to be so jealous of you guys.Seeing as I spend most of my time avoiding most dogs I am thankful we don't have any.I have a giant of a field near where I live and Tia can run with the ball till her hearts content without getting bitten or eaten lol If you and hubby do not feel comfortable there go somewhere your baby can be safe from nips. |

We always will walk to the dog park just bc it is so close and peanut has like tons of energy, When you take Rockie to the dog park or just a regular walk for that matter do you wash his mouth and feet off with a baby wipe?? Because when we get home from the dog park esp I feel peanut is soooo dirty and he comes on the couch and the bed with those dirty pee feet!! Lol so I will usually give him a bath if it has been over a week 1/2 but if it hasnt I will wipe him down with a baby wipe!! Am I crazy?? |
No, you are absolutely not crazy,:) when Rockie goes out in my yard to potty when he comes back in the house Rockie gets his feet, stomache, face and pooh area wiped with his wipes:D It's just personal preference because he is always in our beds. Once he was outside and there was a little worm on his leg when he came from outside:rolleyes: so its always a must for our papa to get cleaned after he comes from outside. |

2 Attachment(s) Couver loves the dog park. He spends his time chasing and playing with all the other dogs. I take him about 4 times a week though, so all the smells and sights are nothing new to him :p Everyone there is amazed at how well he does, and they call him the 'King of the Dog Park'. He might have a small body, but he has a HUGE personality. I think that if you take him consistently, the urge to pee on everything might diminish because his scent is there. I think that the dog park is an important place to take your dog. I believe that the more socialization they have the better! And if you are a good dog owner, then you pick up after your dog. The dog park is not a doggy toilet (although some people may think otherwise). |

Ya know - I really think it depends on the dogs at the park, too. The one I usually take Jackson to is rated like #2 or #3 in the country for dog parks so there's always dogs there that Jackson loves and runs and plays with. But when I take him to this other smaller park... sometimes he just won't click with any of the dogs, and kind of prefers to sit back and watch everyone else (which still tires him out - hence why I take him!) I think I'm also just lucky that I'm in an area with such nice parks. The one I generally take him to is just really nice, all the people are generally really friendly as are the dogs. So I think it's just a great atmosphere and that's why Jackson has SO much fun. He just loves other dogs though no matter where he is! He's a social butterfly. I think dog parks are a really GREAT thing if they're nicely set up, and depending on the people/dogs who visit them. :) |

Our dp's are really nice here...but you know I personaly haven't met anyone that were nice...or wanted to come and sit and talk.. I am thinking I will bring my friend next time she has a French bulldog that is Peanuts bff..maybe that will help. I took him earlier and he wasn't really into it...I don't really think he likes it lol Oh well..Peanut loves to take walks...so we will just do more of that!! :D |

How blessed you all are to have dog parks! I live on 15 acres and my furkids all get lots of running time, but you get to meet new people! I would love to have a dog park nearby where I could go and let my furkids run and I would get to socialize too! |

My two girls LOVE the dog park! But you know whats fun for them?... just walking around the park with me ( 4 times around the fence is about a mile) they run, trot, sniff and pee... oh ..and say hi to the occassional dog that comes up to them to say hello. They have no interest in playing with any of the dogs there but they do like the social atmosphere of all the dogs and owners. At home, the girls play almost none stop with toys. At the doggie park, they have no interest in any toy, they just want to walk, run, sniff & pottie ~ lol They know when it is Sat & Sun morning. They want to go first thing in the morning when it's cooler. |
Genghis used to LOVE the dog park. He would find a new dog playmate, assume the doggy position wag his but to get attention and then run full speed around and around whether the other dog was chasing him or not. It was the cutest thing. He even ran into some dogs as he was running so fast I guess he didn't see them. Then summer came and he just finds a shady spot and sit there till we go home, unless one of his friends is there that he's already met in his "youth" (he's only 11 months now) then the runs around and wrestles and plays. I think he is now into meeting dogs more on an individual basis and playing on real grass. Most of the parks around my house have synthetic grass and since we have the turf for him at home as a pee pee pad that is pretty much all he does on the synthetic stuff now. He has a lot more fun on playdates at home or at open parks. He likes having his own yorkie meets and show his friends where his doggy door is, though I have to say most of his friends don't get the doggy door, so he'll go outside and wonder why no one is following so he waits a while and comes back in it's kinda funny. Anyway I seem to be rambling... |
We do playdates. I wont take mine to dog parks anymore because a Boston thought Pablo was a squirrel and went for him. Also the parks around here do not check for vacs and there was a dog that looked like he was full of worms. Big droopy belly. |
I am not a fan of dog parks. I feel sort of like your DH. I worry they are a place to pick up something nasty. Since there is no way to ensure everyone is keeping their dogs up to date on shots and free from disease, I just don't use them. But that is easy for me to say as I have 2 acres with a full acre fenced for them to have their own private dog park. If I lived in the city, I would probably still use them so my dogs could have the outdoor experience, but I would worry too. Your little man might lose a little of the sniff and mark obsession after visiting a few times. But he will probably continue to use at least the beginning of each visit to remark over other dogs' scents before he settles into a play routine. That is just the way of it, more so with the boys. |
I hate the dog park. Kalina and Matilda are both intimidated by the other dogs and I have found that the owners think the dog park is an excuse to just let their dogs bound about with no supervision whatsoever. One dog was trying to hump Kalina while his owner sat across the fenced area talking on her cell phone. I have a big yard, fenced in, so I don't have to go to the dog park; I tried it because I thought they would enjoy playing with other dogs. I found big dogs in the small dog area and vice versa. It was a mess. I went twice and that was enough for me. |

We live on 3 acres, but there's 90 acres of farmland behind us that Jackson just LOVES to run on. There's a few videos of him running through it on my YouTube account: YouTube - brittanyjadexo's Channel |
Yeah I agree. For the most part the dog park's are pretty gross... Most of the people I have seen just let their dogs go crazy and have no discipline in what they are doing. Peanut is fully vaccinated, but I know there is always that chance of him catching something. And you never know what the other people are not doing with their pets..as far as vaccines.Yesterday I saw a 5 month old puppy going into the dark park!! Thats what I worry about the most.. and Peanut is really submissive, I am not sure if that is good or bad, but when he is near me and a strange dog comes up to us and touches me he barks at them and does like a little bite, just like a get away bite. So I don't know I think there are way too many dangers at the dog parks, I can understand if you could know about the dog if they were vaccinated, healthy and know on their temperment, and if the park people would spray down the park...but they dont. At least I am not aware of that. I think I will just end my worries and keep taking Peanut on our walks. Thats what he enjoy's...and we have this big grass area at our condos that DH and I will take him and play with his ball ( he loves it) :D |
Former Dog Park Lover I used to live right next door to the Dog Park, I got Lucky that the House was for Rent @ the time. I had Artie & Abigail, since I lived so close I was able to take them 3-4 times a day. I was able to look out of both my front & back windows so I could tell who was there.....we made alot of Friends there that came at specific days and times, I could tell by their parked Cars. After about a year they had a Litter of 3 puppies so I had 5 Yorkies @ one time, it was a good opportunity to "Socialize" them w/other Dogs. My Pack only played w/small Dogs that they knew, but my poor Artie & Abigail were very protective and nervous wrecks when it came to larger Dogs. They never started a Fight but they are fearless, so it made me feel like they always had to defend themselves. So for the sake of their Safety and my Peace of mind I don't take them anymore! I also hated that nasty Pee smell and how dirty they always got, they would always find a puddle to run through or roll in the stinkiest pile of leaves. IMO Dog Parks are for people who don't want to take the time to actually Walk/Exercise their Dogs, they just let them run wild and attack others w/o even correcting them? Even though they have sighn's posted every where w/the rules there is NO one there to enforce them. The last straw for me was when they "Closed" it for few days b/c some one brought a puppy in w/o any vaccinations and it ended up w/Parvo! Now they have stricter rules but again no one is around to enforce them. |
