Liver Shunt 2 Attachment(s) Well, my girlfriend and I's 4 month old Teacup Yorkie (ty) was rushed to the hospital last night. Ty was Slobbery, Disoriented, Running into the wall and unable to respond to his name or anything. Ty has done this before and has always been slobbery so i know he came from the breeder like this. The Vet has informed us that based on the symptoms and prelilminary blood tests that it is most likely the cause of a Liver Shunt. They are currently Fasting him and doing the acid test today with results provided to us tomorrow sometime. I am currently wondering about this symptom and wether it is Genetic and what ground we have against the Breeder. We are already into the Emergancy Vet bill for $1000. The Vet has given us 2 options of Surgury or having him Put down. From what ive read on here in the short while is that there are diets to control this and medicine?? Is this a option?? If it is 100% positive on a Liver Shunt, then we are prepared to have him put down as i dont want to see the lil guy suffer anymore. But i certainly do not want to lose him if there are other ways to deal with this. Thank you Sean |
I'm so sorry. I do not know much about liver shunt but do know there are different types. Sometimes it can be controlled with a special diet or fixed with a simple operation. There are organizations that might be able to help, either financially or by taking the puppy and getting the surgery done. Fanny Mae Liver Shunt Fund or United Yorkie Rescue are two that I know. Did the breeder give you a health guarantee? There will be others here that will be of more help but I will be thinking of Ty and praying for his recovery. |
Thanks, i am unsure of the garuntee as my girlfriend handled all the paperwork and the dealings with the breeder. If there was none then do we have any legal rights?? If there was one, what type of reimbursment should we expect and be firm on a agreement too?? We have heard from the Vet and he has told us that when Ty was admitted he had a bloodsuger count of about 60 and that we should expect the blood test results tomorrow afternoon'ish. |
Definantly check the paperwork. Some breeders have a health guarantee up to a certain amount of time. Also I beleive that there is a test that can be done earlier some breeders get before selling their pups. I hope it works out for you and your little guy! He's a cutie! :animal36 |
There are different kinds of shunt and differing severity of the problem. You can use the search on this site to look for info from other threads on this subject or www.vetinfo.com has an explanation. The breeder needs to be notified immediately so she does not breed those dogs again. This is a genetic problem. She should be liable for vet bills up to the purchase price of the pup. Many breeders do not honor this and will only offer a replacement pup...The guarantee will let you know how much recourse you have. Good luck. |
The breeder has already been notified and a full report is going to be faxed to them and thier vet. They have offered another puppy already, but my GF does not want another dog, and personally i understand and would not want to put myself in the position that we might have to make, Ever again! I have spent the last 4hrs of my life on the search button doing what research i can and have learned quite a bit. Thank you all for the fast responces, and please dont let the helpful info stop coming. Sean |
Poor little fellow :( I sure hope he can make it through this. I don't know anything about liver shunt. Best wishes to you and your friend. |
I am sooo sorry to hear your puppy might have a liver shunt. My family and I have gone through this ordeal with our Yorkie, Tucker. He is a very large Yorkie, and no one suspected a liver shunt, but he had the EXACT same symptoms as yours. Most of the time, surgery is the only way, the defect is genetic. But we were very fortunate with Tucker, and are able to maintain him with medication and diet. I have posted before concerning his shunt if you would like to read it. Also, I have a link that will give you some good info. Keep us posted, and good luck ;) http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16530 http://www.yorkierescue.com/livershunt/research2.html http://www.vetinfo4dogs.com/dshunt.html |

Can you really mess up a bile acid test that would warrent a 2nd opinion? Dont get me wrong, if the option for surgery presents a promising outlook everything will be done in my power to see that this dog recieves it, but i have prepared myself for the worse, so only way things change, is if they take a turn for the better. |
Is there anything i can do as far as making 100% sure that the breeder does not breed the puppies parents again? Notify AKC or any other orginzations, if so what ones? I have a feeling things might get nasty between the breeder and I so if he is not willing to take responsibility for this, then he probably wont stop breeding them. No word on lil Ty yet as of 8:45am EST, we are expecting a call from the vet anytime now. ::fingers crossed:: |

Puppy Update: Vet called to let us know that Ty's acid test came back at a level of 60 ... :( .......The surgery will be around $1500 and we are approved for a interest free Care Card loan to pay for it, so we are going to go ahead with it, provided the ultrasound shows where the shunt is and the Vet provides us with a good report. I am going after the Breeder for the cost of the Puppy $875 flwon into us and to get them to pay the $810 for the vet bills for the last 2 days. I will work down from there. Plan on offering them to send us the Puppy fee upfront and then pay us the rest when they can aslong as we can pay off the Care Card within the intrest free time frame. |
liver shunt My prayers are with you.....my puppy has a cleft pallatte and lip and one of the future problems will be liver shunt....she is such a fighter that I too will not put her down unless there is no other possiblities....good luck with everything |
I'm so sorry to hear about little Ty. If you do go through with the surgery, please let us know how his recovery goes. He's in my prayers. Codie and Katie send Ty some puppy kisses! |
I'm really sorry to hear about your ordeal. I hope your little Ty pulls through with flying colors. I'm glad that your vet provides a credit card care card. That is a great option. I wish you luck in getting all the money from the breeder that you are requesting to reimburse you for the vets bills. Hugs to Ty from Thor! Hannah |
Thanks everyone, i will be sure to keep everyone updated on the process. |

Thank you for the input, Like i said, im not settling for less then what was paid for the puppy at bare minimum. I would also like the Breeder to take care of the $810 Vet bill (but i am not getting my hopes up, just hoping he is a good guy and cares about the dogs well being more then a profit), and i will cover the surgery as it is my choice to not have him put down. Do you include a written and signed garuntee with the dog, or is it just a understanding?? I can not find any paperwork that we recieved about a health garuntee, Just a Vets statement saying the dog was healthy for shipment and a Cert. of Health stating that the dog was free of any diseses and was ok to send out of state. |
I hope lil Ty's surgery goes okay! |

Hopefully they will at least refund you the money that you paid for him. I sure hope he gets to feeling better soon. |
I am sorry your dog is sick. I hope the breeder refunds some money to you. Thats great that your vet has a payment plan. Hopefully he will get better soon. |

Your Ty has my best wishes for a successful outcome....that's my youngest boy's name too. |
Well, the Breeder has refused to do anything but give me a new puppy. I cant seem to make his greedy self understand, that if i wanted another dog, i woudlnt be spending $1500 to save this one. Im only asking for the $810 with is less then paid for the dog. He says he cant afford to take money out of his pocket and had the balls to tell me that "sometimes you just have to suck it up and take the loss" i cant believe how arragant he was, He suggested i crate the dog and send him back to AZ....im in NH.....so his vet can verify my vets results. Cant seem to get it through his head that this dog is Dying and that just isnt possible....ARGH!!! |
He is ADORABLE!! I hope all turns out well for you and your lil' angel boy. The breeder sounds like a real S.O.B!!!! Be persistent and hopefully he will do what's right. My thoughts and prayers and with you and your Ty baby. |

You would think that he would accept fax documentation from your vet and not subject this poor little guy to anything else. I agre he does sound like an SOB. I'm sorry that you are having such a difficult time with him. |
I told him point blank we can do it the easy way or the hard way, I design webpages for a part time hobby, ill make sure no one ever has to deal with this guy EVER again. Update: Went to visit the lil guy in hospital, so horrible seeing him with a lil shaved leg and a IV in the other leg. He wanted to jump around and play with me so bad, His ears went straight up the second i poked my head in the door, he was so happy to see me! Im happy to say the the Vet Hospital offered to do the Ultrasound for free on him and hopefully it will all come out good. |

Sounds like he may be feeling a little better. I hope that you are able to get something satisfactory out of this guy. Good Luck. Hopefully your little one will start feeling better real soon. So when are they going to do his surgery? Thanks for keeping us posted. |
Well, they are unable to find the shunt with a Ultrasound (not to sure what that means as far as where it is), They are prepared to do the surgery tomorrow, but we are gonna hold off until we consult a Local vet here who specializes in Small animal Surgery. Compare the prices and see what they think. Hopefully a couple more days and this will all be done. Sean |
The shunts do not always show up in an ultrasound, A scintigraphy usually will show a shunt. If it is a Portosystemic surgery can correct it, if it is MVD it is controlled by diet. The surgery is costly, but the dog does go on to live a normal life after it. I doubt the breeder will do anything about the pups, and will probably continue to breed the pair and keep selling these puppies that will cause heart ache among people who buy them. |
