Ill rant for you. If I see a pitbull heading my way I will pick Tia up. I don't care what the owners think , Ill do it for her .Her safety is my priority. Also I will not listen to an owner which says "hes so friendly" I will go on my instinct with ANY dog but pitbulls forget it , I don't give them a chance. They have locking jaws which would kill my baby with one bite. I would never let her meet one if I could help it. On the other hand you have brought a pitbull up with a yorkie and you have 100% trust , good for you but just don't expect people that don't know your dog to do the same. Sorry to be mean but it is my honest opinion.:) |

To be totally honest I am afraid of them. They are a very powerful dog. I dont feel the need to have that powerful of a dog or have MY yorkies around one |

You are entitled to your opinion, just as I am. And I do think it is ignorant to say that you think pit bulls should be eliminated as a breed. Not to mention I found it incredibly rude as a "pit bull"/boxer mix owner for you to say that "the breed of pit bull which doesn't exist" should be eliminated. 1) Because "PITBULL" is NOT a breed. It is a slang term that encompasses many breeds. I could post a link right now to about 50 dog pictures and I can guarantee most couldn't pick the american staffordshire terrier out of them. 2) I think your statement is ignorant to say that a breed should be eliminated because of what man did to them. I did not say YOU were ignorant. I said your statement was ignorant. |

To the op- your pics are precious and you shouldn't worry about our opinions although you were probably expecting it the way your thread was worded lol |

BUT ...when I have my girls out on our walks and see him or another large dog - yes - I carry them. Good thing I do to because I was charged one day by one who was off leash. didn't seem agressive but jumped on my back (like 10 times trying to get to them) while I stood and slowely turned in circles .....I don't take chances with ANY large dog. Yorkies & small breeds are attacked all the time - we see it all over this site. Why risk it ? |

I had posted that I believe the pit bulls should all be spayed and neutered. I would not want to kill those that are living now, but I do believe these breeds that encompass the "pitt bulls" slang or otherwise, were bred without any regard for the dogs or humanity. It was a MANKIND mistake, but it needs to end. The breed was not bred to hunt, they were bred to fight to the death. Responsible breeders are supposed to breed to temperment. The pit breeders bred to the WRONG temperment and only bred the most vicious, the strongest bites, the worst of the breed. I do not speak from a position of fear or ignorance. Over my many years (yes, I guess I am an "elder" as I was recently called here :D), I have had the misfortune of having way too much closeness with several pit bulls. My very good friend has a pit bull that is the most lovable thing -- but I would no more trust it than I would a serial murderer. I will pet it, be kind to it, even like it, but it will NEVER play with my dogs or be around my grandchildren unattended. I have had lots of friends and one family member that owned these dogs. I have seen them all stick up for the breed and claim they are all the gentlest dogs ever. But eventually, all but the one, have hurt someone or killed a pet and showed just how vicious it could be. It is not the dog's fault. And these were well-trained dogs with well-educated owers. Unfortunately, man bred them to be killing machines. They can only fight that off for so long. So, I am all for legislation that requires spaying and neutering of all pit bulls, whether they are called American Pit Bulls, American Staffordshire Terriers, or whatever..... We have made the right decision for so many breeds, we do not need to continue to live with the mistake that was the breeding for pit bulls. This is just my opinion and does not affect anyone else, except for the way I will cast a vote if given the chance. Unfortunately, I live in the land of the "good ol' boys" and backwoods dog fights are still a fact of life. So, I doubt we will get to vote as many other communities, states, and even countries have been able to do. |
Watch out for cats too!! Not saying cats are mean, but me and my DH was up in Lake Arrowhead and we were at some "Mom and Pop" feed store, I was knealing down looking at the bird seed and I had peanut in my arms and out of the blue the store cat jumped on my back and tried to swipe at Peanut!! lmao The lesson is if you have a small baby watch them at all times :D with a Pit bull or cat..they still need to be watched |
Yorkies shouldn't be biting to begin with. If Jemma bit someone, I'd bite her. Up to the owners to correct that behavior. Now if it is self defense, that's a totally difference issue. |

that was a bit rude don't you think. it is a known fact that Pits ARE great with children. If you take a step back from your judgements and actually research the breed itself and not the opinions you will find that they are in fact great family pets. they are gentle with children and were once even known as Nanny Dogs. a few facts: -pits are great therapy dogs, search and rescue dogs, and bomb dogs. they are eager to please people and will do anything for them -Petey from The little rascals was a pit -the dog on little house on the prairie was a pit -Helen Keller owned a pit -The Pit Bull was America's mascot in both WWI and WWII -There was a pit named Sgt. Stubby who became a war hero by saving his entire platoon and capturing a german spy while being wounded in action twice. -Pit Bulls scored an 83.4% passing rate on the american temperament test. yorkies score an 82.1% (ATTS - American Temperament Test Society, Inc. - ATTS Breed Statistics - page 1) Here is a nice article on pitties. http://www.times-standard.com/opinion/ci_6993026 |
wow :bravo: to everyone... seriously this thread is getting a little crazy! Don't you guys noticed that pretty much what was said on page 2 is said on page5?? You guys are just repeating what you all are saying.. I think you all should give it a rest..You guys don't have to battle with eachother over this~ Just drop it already.. |
take a moment of zen :ghug: group hug everyone! |
The weirdest thing just happened - I did a post right at 5:30 before I left work - came home and first thing on the Houston news is a 3 year old playing in her aunts backyard was just mauled....she's in critical condition. :( Unfortunatly I think people have a problem with them is they can turn on people who never expect it. I think they'e a great breed in the right hands - but still - dangerous |

It's okay. We have the Pitt Bull debate every few months anyway. But let's not get angry with each other and delight the originator. Let's just agree that there are two sides to the subject and we are okay to disagree. |

Even though I may be "sticking up" for the Pits already here... it's kind of a thing like, let's just stop the risk. I think they should start a new generation of Pits if that's even possible?! I'm not good w/ this genetic stuff. |

Hey Deb, If you read my first reply on this thread, I AGREE 100% with what you said and I am a pit bull owner :) I NEVER EVEN LET GUCCI near my bullies and DO NOT Leave my kids unattended with them.. but I am this way with ALL BIG DOGS not just this breed. My Disagreement comes in when one singles out a breed and blames OWNER NEGLIGANCE and IRRESPONSIBLE BREEDING on that breed. Quote:

I still don't agree with you and NEVER ONCE CONTRADICTED MYSELF... Please go back and read again. I won't waste time arguing or debating on a message board as it is pointless and like I said "A WASTE" I STILL BELIEVE YOUR STATEMENT WAS IGNORANT, to condemn an entire breed to death because of what happened with the ONE dog you were in contact with is not OK. I have to jump in here just a little :). The mod in me wants to say: let's make sure we're being as respectful as possible for a good discussion - this is a very sensitive issue. Please? ----- The Me in Me wants to just simply say: I am 100% against any and all breed legislation. If we open the door to prejudice against any breed, we open it against ALL breeds. Best Friends Society has some great reading on BSL (breed specific legislation) and LOTS of info about Pitbulls (they are the charity that took in Michael Vick's Pitbulls and rehabilitated them w/ lots of TLC). :) |
I think what us that love pits want people to realize is that as much as we all love our yorkies..we love our pits as much and it hurts us to hear so many negative things about the breed we love.. |
