Dogs will be dogs, big or small. I think it's wonderful that I can trust Jackson around bigger dogs and that's he's not scared of them yet know how to act, he doesn't get in their faces, he doesn't annoy them or egg them on. If I had seen one sign of an aggressive dog, heard a growl towards Jackson or another dog, or had a rowdy obnoxious dog (big or small) we would have been gone.

People can say "It's not the dog,it's how it's raised."all they want but facts are facts.Pitbulls are violent unpredictable dogs that are bred for bloodlust.A Yorkie and a Pitbull togther will eventually end in heartache.I urge you to wise up before it's too late.

pits can get along fine with any dog or person if they are raised properly just like people its all in your upbringing just like people and their opinions of them its how you and they are raised!

i have brought home pitts fatty the yorkie got along with them fine hubby has a problem with them because he thinks they are bad because they are pitts i disagree! anyways heres a pitt lily and bald fatty

As I said in an above post -- I would NOT own a Pit Bull. 1) I don't think they're that cute, they're not my style of dog, that's not to offend anyone 2) I'm not a strong minded enough owner to control such a powerful dog 3) I wouldn't want to deal with the stereotypes. 4) They tend to be hyper. I don't think they're bad dogs. Every Pit I've met has been a sweetheart to me and to my dog. I'm not necessarily defending Pit Bulls but I see so much bias against big dogs in general on this board and I think it's kind of unfair to assume they're going to kill our Yorkies or something. I think trust is very important with dogs, if you don't trust or respect them, they aren't going to do the same to you. My aunt used to own a Rottweiler who was an absolute sweetheart but my mom doesn't like dogs in general and was terrified of him. He could totally sense her energy and did growl at her once. Me - even as a young kid, I was so comfortable around that dog, he would give me kisses, and love me to death.

I have a pit mix and todayi'm going to pick up an american bulldog/pit mix..plus i have a lb and chi and yorkie..My 4 pound chi drops my big dogs..they are scared to death of him..he is the boss and they listen to him 100%..i will try to catch a pic of it sometime..
people need to educate themselves on pit bulls they will find that they are wonderful dogs...
the first pic is the girl i'm picking up today..she was to be pts and I couldn't bare for that to happen..the second is my pit/lab mix..she was dumped at my house in really bad shape..bobo i bought from a really good breeder..biskit i got from a friend of mine..i love that pi of him lol..

I think we all need to respect those that fear big dogs..people can't help what or who they are afraid of..my advice to those that are afraid..education is a powerful tool..

I am certainly not afraid of ANY dog. I am a pet sitter and take care of ALL kinds of dogs. I think all of us are just really in love with our little Yorkies and would never think of putting them in a dangerous position. The fact is.....Pits and other big dogs have killed little dogs! So, why take the chance.

This subject can be argued all day long. But just because we dont care for pits and dont want our babies around them, does not mean WE are afraid of them.

After personally witnessing several Pit Bull's go crazy, who ALL had wonderful owners, I will NEVER change my mind.

There is a reason they are fighters.

I personally wouldn't want Pixel around a Pit at all. I USED to think they just got a bad rap and felt it was all in how they were raised, BUT I had a bad experience awhile back that totally changed my mind. A friend of mine had one and I had known it for years. Such a sweetheart (so I thought) until one day it totally turned on me for no reason!! He lunged at my viciously with no warning when I was just standing there talking to my friend!! Scared the hell outta me!! She had one more incident where he acted aggressive toward HER and she took him to the pound. I know he wasn't abused or anything like that, as my friend is a big animal lover and advocate against that kind of thing. I won't look at that breed the same again! I now feel they are very unpredictable and wouldn't trust one around my little baby boy!

those are cute pics! i have to say that pits are great dogs, its the owners that make them bad.....pits are on the top list for family dogs, labs and cockers are the top 2 for biters! my boyfriends dog, honey is a lab/pit mix and her and fiona get along great! ;)

I don't fear big dogs, I fear what can happen in some situations between big dogs and little dogs. And I fear that Yorkie owners new and experienced may become too lax and not properly monitor interactions between dogs at the expense of their pets. Just want to make people aware that it can be dangerous, and life threatening. I owned a GSD along with a Maltese and a Yorkie. She got along well, and the minor skirmishes never resulted in injury. I feel those situations are in the minority and the big dogs that can be trusted with small dogs are not the norm but the exception of their breed.

Actually - they are. They're known to be very good with children, surprisingly.

Now, would I pick the Pit Bull as a family choice? No. But I'm just saying, to laugh at what she is saying, when it is in fact known to be true, is kind of rude. I think Pit's have been bred badly by too many humans and I simply wouldn't know which ones to trust, etc, so no, I wouldn't pick a Pit as a family dog but I just wanted to clarify that they're known to be very gentle and patient with children they've been raised with. Obviously, that's not always the case, because we hear all the stories about them attacking people that have loved them forever, etc, hence why I wouldn't own one. But I just wanted to play a little devil's advocate here and show the other side.

I do agree that people probably do become lax; I too owned a GSD for four years before she had to be put to sleep for attacking a plumber who unexpectedly came onto our property. I wish I had known back then what I know now and we did NOT research the breed enough before making an impulsive purchase of a GSD. She was loyal to the end to our family but did NOT like strangers at ALL. I would have NEVER trusted her around a small dog or a young child for that matter. All of that was our fault though. We were not the right owners for such a breed of dog and were considering giving her to a police force at the age of 2 to see if they wanted to take her in or train her. She was an amazing guard dog, as she was bred to do.

I do like to think that most people who are bringing their dogs into a dog park know their dog well enough to know their temperament and trust them around all kinds of people and dogs, or else why on earth would you bring them to a dog park? I would've never brought our GSD to a dog park knowing what she was capable of. I do like to have faith in people, but I also know there's owners out there who just don't care, etc. But as I said, I'm smart, I've got common sense, and I watch out for things at the dog park that other people probably don't. I hardly ever for a second take my eye off of Jackson. And when we go to a certain dog park (in Annapolis), he's in the small dog section anyways. I don't feel comfortable allowing him into Quiet Water's "big dog" section because there is just *too* many big dogs in there.

My biggest issue is trust. I put trust in my dog to behave, I put trust in other dogs, big or small, to behave and I put trust in the owners. If I see a dog or owner I don't trust... I will leave. Simple as that.

I LOVE PIT BULLS, and I have a couple of them HOWEVER, I NEVER, EVER, EVER Leave Gucci around them!! Why? Because they are big, heavy, rough dogs and I don't feel a delicate Yorkie should be a play option for them.

My dogs are as friendly as ever, I was raised around Pit bulls my entire life... but that doesn't mean that they don't play rough and it doesn't mean that if another dog bites them they WON'T get upset. Simple as that.

My Dogs are Family dogs and love my husband and myself as well as our girls.. They wouldn't intentionally hurt a fly. However, once again I DO NOT LEAVE MY GIRLS UNATTENDED WITH THE DOGS Either... They are big and can hurt them if they wanted to.

My Take is this - A DOG IS A DOG and you never know what they are thinking as they cannot speak. I believe this is TRUE OF ALL DOGS not just pitties. If the Dog is Large enough to hurt or kill something, NEITHER MY KIDS or MY YORKIE OR ANY OTHER SMALL DOG will be left alone to "hang out" with it.

I think it's the owners responsibility to keep their kids and pets safe. When people start leaving their large dogs alone with their smaller ones.. accidents CAN happen and sometimes they WILL so be prepared. Who is to say Large Dog A isn't ill in the tummy and Small Dog B decides to pounce on Large Dog A's stomach to play... Well Large Dog A being taken off guard and hurt can easily come to defense and Snap at Small Dog B. Why? Because like people, dogs have reflexes and instant reactions to pain.

I'm sorry but I've seen Yorkies on here killed by other family dogs during rough play etc. and It's just not Ok.

Wow I'm sorry but this statement I have to respond to. That's just ignorant to say that Pit Bulls as a breed should be eliminated. How difficult do you think it would be to start inbreeding labs, goldens, any terrier including the Yorkie, to totally change their personality and make them aggressive. It wouldn't be that hard at all.
The reason that you see so many pitbulls in the media is because people feed off of it. It's the mass public stereotype. Pit Bulls are a dime a dozen and therefore easy to turn into vicious fighters. Yes they were bred for hunting and to bring down larger animals, but go have a look into the background of many of the beloved "family pets" and you will see the same.
Out of those links that were posted, how many of them were American Staffordshire Terriers that were quality bred from parents with stable temperaments and breeders who care about the breed? I'd be zero to none.
Do you know what breeds the term "pit bull" actually encompass? If you look up various laws, it can actually be :
American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, and Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and dogs with significant mixes of these breeds; however, a few jurisdictions also classify the American Bulldog and the Bull Terrier as a "pit bull".
The "pit bull" is not a breed. It's a slang term.

Btw, our pit bull boxer mix is the sweetest most well behaved boy. He loves our 3 pound Yorkie and treats her with love and gentleness. He's been around many small dogs and "knows" when they are smaller. About that prey instinct drive, most dogs know the difference between a dog and another type of animal by smell. Unless the dog has had no training or has over the type prey drive, which should then not be owned by a novice dog handler, the dog will know the difference.

And seriously? I keep reading Yorkies don't kill babies and children, seriously? I mean just think about that logically for a second. Size difference, jaw strength, ability to pull the dog off, etc... It's not because of a super sweet all perfection temperament, it's because of the size and other physical abilities.

I too feel that the statement was Ignorant to say the least. It's sad that people who have NEVER owned, cared for or studied the breed PASS JUDGEMENT on it.
