Which stores can you... Which stores can you get away with bringing your little furbutt in with you? Of course in a carrier, but if their little head is sticking out. I just ordered a bag and I would love to be able to take her on small errands with me, but was wondering how your experiences go with bringing you babies??? |
Hi there...well I see you are in Columbia..it may be different for you..but over here in the U.K. we can't take our little ones into hardly any stores at all..even in a carrier...All shops etc. say "No Dogs" except Guide Dogs...which does make socialising pups a difficult thing...as crowded shops would be good I reckon . Markets are o.k. as are some Garden Centres..but again not that many. We wouldn't get away with it..even in a carrier. Last year when I carried my little Sammie everywhere with me in my arms..I tried several places...to see if they would let me in with him...only a few were understanding... So over your way..it seems a lot more doggy friendly than over here... Chris..x |
Prince has been to Macy's, Barnes and Noble, Bed, bath and Beyond, Walmart, the post office, Hallmart, Home Depot, Lowe's, Starbucks (outside only), and Kroger grocery store. He was in his carrier, and no one knew he was there, except at Hallmart. They wanted me to take him out so they could see him! |
I could never sneak Jackson in anywhere, he's 13lbs LOL. But I've heard of places like Lowe's, Home Depot, etc. When I was purchasing my iPhone in the AT&T store there was a woman with a little yorkie in her purse! lol. |
We covered most of the Silver Sands outlet in Destin, FL with Sophie in a bag. The only stores we weren't welcome in served food, which makes sense. Most of the stores welcomed her (but then she is mighty cute, hehe). My son used to work at Target and he's told me that Target will not allow you to bring in a dog unless it's a service dog. I really think the trick is not to try if food is served at all (Even Target has a food court). |
I think the key here is that they were in a carrier and 'hidden'. Heck, I've taken mine in restaurants and eaten, with them them in a carrier that looks like a purse sitting at my feet. As long as they were quiet. God forbid they were to bark. But, as far as being seen. I use a sling that they sit side by side in, each in a halter with a clip. 1/3 of their bodies are sticking out. Gas stations, malls, most any stores that don't sell/serve food have never been a problem. I don't ask, just stroll on in. It's up to them to notice, stop and send me away. If there is a sign out front saying no. Then I'm not going in. No sign, then I'll give it a shot. Most employees don't want confrontation and if you look like you assume it's acceptable they really don't know how to stop you. Also, I think it has to do with how you dress and carry yourself. Unfortunately, 'money' really does talk. If you dress decently, are 'wearing' an 'expensive' dog and look like someone who is going to probably spend some money, odds are they are going to let you shop. You dress sloppy and you have a smelly hairball in your arms, and look as though you feel like you 'dont belong' the shopkeeper may think you don't. P.S. to clarify 50% of the time, I leave 'em home and run to walmart in my sweats...LOL 'cuz me and the hairballs can't always afford to 'dress'...okay 80%...ok... |

Hello fellow Missourian! Bailey is not a fan of the purse thing so I take her in my arms - Hobby Lobby, JoAnn's, Westlakes, Home Depot, Old Time Pottery, Lowes, The Grass Pad and Feldmans. I too stay away from food places. Have fun! |

I wish i could take my yorkie in stores. He is a 7 kilo yorkie, i cant find a purse that fits him well, and he would propably bark in it if i had one. I've once taken him in the pet store that is in the mall here, everybody watched us (i had him in a plastic cage), all the kids came and wanted to pet him :P |
Couver has been to a lot of stores with me... but most of them he was hidden in his carrier hidden :D Some of these include: -Bath and Body Works, pubs, clubs, Walmart, Bed Bath and Beyond, TJ Maxx, the mall and many more. He has been everywhere. I think most stores are ok with it as long as they do not serve food and he is in his bag :) |
some people r nice , some r not !!!! I take my anyway they don't sale or sever food, but the post office in Orlando in Waterford lake, told me no pets and the poor thing was in a carrier on wheels on the floor, a little girl got excited and saw us. The postal witch , almost went over the counter. I told her I wasn't in her line and I was next and the dog was in a carrier on the floor, and I didn't see any sign that said no pets. Well I finish my business and for now on, no post office for us. bark@ulater!!!!! manina, miley:aimeeyork, max:aimeeyork |
There was a thread about this awhile back. Some of us take ours pretty much everywhere and others don't. My girl stays in her bag, I put it in the cart with her facing me unless I keep it on my shoulder and even if she stickes her head out a bit nobody says a word if they notice. |
Maddy comes to Homegoods, TJMAxx, outlet malls, Target, Wal-mart, etc. I put her in her carrier and she is content. She would rather walk, but its the only way to sneak her! |
A lot of the retail stores will allow you in as long as they don't serve food (health code violation.) Generally, the stores don't really allow you in with a dog (most stores have some kind of rule against this) but they'd rather see you shop and spend money then send you away. The whole "we have rules but we turn a blind eye" kind of thing. They're more concerned about an animal making a mess then they are about you having a dog that is not bring attention to itself. If you don't call attention to yourself (especially if you're using something that doesn't scream that you're carrying a dog) you should generally be fine. Most employees and managers want to avoid having any kind of confrontation that would potentially cause a problem. I've worked part-time in several retail stores over the years, and in all the stores I've worked at, the general consensus has always been: "as long as the feet don't touch the floor leave them alone" Your best bet is to really just... risk it (and don't test on days when you really have to shop there :) ). Attitude makes a huge difference too, since you're a lot more likely to be noticed and checked out if you appear nervous and such. If they make a big deal, just quietly leave and put em on your "no" list. |
I take mine to the grocery store, post office, petsmart. |
Thanks for the responses guys! I just ordered a sling carrier Chocolate Bows Bag I can't wait to get it! I know another member on here has the same one in a different color. I am hoping that I can get away with some places. It's not just because I want to carry her around. Like when I have to go to Petco and she can come with and I need to run into another store really quick. Although if things go well, she might just be with me as much as possible :D |
This is great info! I can't wait to get my bag so I can take Oliver out:) |
I have taken Gunnar into Joann's, Michaels, Walmart, fabric stores etc. in his stroller. I keep his screen zipped closed and he doesn't make a sound, he just looks out the front. Some people don't even realize that its' a stroller for a dog, not a baby! I don't take in the grocery store or restraunts. Donna |
we've taken them on leash to Home depot, car dealerships, pet stores, and Rural King with no problem. I bought a Kwigy Bo Alex and Gwenndylin can hide in there an no one knows I have her with me. I went all over Chicago while on a short trip. As a rule, I don't bring them into stores that serve food or have food on their shelves because I hear they can have major fines and would most likely pass those to me. |
we had a kwigy-bo alex luxe---stolen 2 days ago! And, our baby went with us everywhere. She is so depressed that she has to stay home away from us! She about had a nervous breakdown that we had to leave her the last 2 days. Hopefully, we can get a new bag soon and she will resume her mobile life of museums, plays, restaurants, travel and stores! She goes everywhere...and loves it. |

I've run into the grocery for real quick short trips with Hot Rod in a carrier but I'm not crazy about brining him in there. Usually he's in my arms and we've gone just about everywhere. The only place that I was kicked out of was Target. I totally understand but they were very rude about it. The guards pretty much shouted at me. I was ticked off but there was something in $ section that I needed so I asked if I could pay for it and leave...they watched my and then the cashier also told me I couldn't stay and I let her know I wanted to pay and leave and that I was already told. She kept fussing and if it wasn't for the fact that I needed this 1 thing I would have really let them know that it was very rude and unprofessional the way they were handling the whole situation. Little do they know that I've had him in there prior-in a carrier. I've walked around Walmart for an hour with him, Kohls for about 2 hours, kmart-all the time (my local store), Tuesday morning, the manager loves him there, walgrens-all the woman love him, joanns. |
I have brought a yorkie into, Walmart once but now they have the grocery aisles so not allowed any more. The dollar store, the grocery store for quick run ins. Corner stores, hardware store. I try different stores but if they sell food they don't want you in usually. I tried a bargain store once but they kicked me out lol probably because of the grocery aisles. I always carry her in my arms. In the winter I put them in my coat and let her head pop out, thats what I did with Stormy anyways. Oh yeah and I've brought Stormy to the nail salon before too!:D |

I forgot about the nail salon! Couver comes with me every time I get my nails done and the girls love him!! |

I know hair salons can lose their license for having animals inside. I don't know about nail salons. However salons usually know when they are to be inspected by the State Board. (we always did) |

I take mine in alot of non food carrying stores here in Georgia. I either carry her, put her in the cart or have her in her carrier. I can't remember but one home depot that told me she couldn't come in but they let her come in the next time. It just so happened that the manger that I ask does resue and she told me just to let her know if they said no again. My bank won't let her in so we go to the drive through and they always give her a treat.:animal36 |
here in wa state walmart, target k mart all those places are a no no. I take chester to bed bath and beyond, office max and office depot, any place that does not have food basically |
