Big yorkies? I dropped Reggie off to be groomed today and when I went to pick him up Sherry had the most gorgeous Yorkie on the table working on her. She was just beautiful and the biggest Yorkie I have ever seen. Not a fat dog, just a big Yorkie. I asked her about it and she said it was one that she had bred and sold as a puppy and for some unknown reason she grew big. She said the owners claim she weighs 15 lbs now. She was sure bigger than Reggie but just beautiful! Has anyone here ever had a Yorkie to get really big? |
I know a lot of people on here have "teapots". My Roscoe is 10+ pounds and my big bundle of love. |
Jackson's 12.5 pounds right now. :) Love his size, personally. Perfect for me. I know Buddy here on YT (Member name ARCHIE) is 16 pounds, if I remember correctly? |
I just looked at Jackson's pictures and he is adorable. His coloring reminds me a good bit of Reggie's. Reggie is only 3/4 Yorkie though and 1/4 Lhasa and so he has a lot of silvery white coming out on him where Yorkies are usually tan/brown. I looked up Buddy too and he is beautiful. He looks almost just like the Yorkie I saw today. I have to say I like the bigger guys! Sherry said Reggie has so much fun playing today with the big Yorkie and the Lhasa there in the daycare room while waiting his turn. |
my friends has yorkie and weight 11 she is so cute :D my Lucky is 2.5 and when they meet to play Lucky looks so small lol |

Oh what a pretty Lhasa! You were a cute kid too! Thank you for your compliments on our guy! Reggie is 1 year old now (08/11/09) and weighs 9 1/2 lbs. I am glad that he is on the smaller side like a Yorkie and not as big as some of the Lhasas because they can get pretty big. |
Teapot are for sure really cute too!:D |
Here's Reggie today, after being groomed yesterday. He is laying on his favorite spot in front of the back storm door looking out the window. See how much silver white he has now! http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y10...gie/Image3.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y10...gie/Image2.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y10...gie/Image4.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y10...gie/Image1.jpg |
He's the same color as my Zada. He sure is an adorable boy and boy, does he ever have the perfect place for his snoozer pad. Now he can keep an eye on the outside world. :D |
I have four Yorkies. 3.6lb, 4.2lb, 4.6lb these are considered "teas" which to my understanding only means that at birth they could fit into a china tea cup. My fourth and most beautiful is four years old, is between 9-10 pounds. He is a blue and gold with the sweetest babydoll face. Thick full coat to the floor that needs to be cut back off the floor about every 6 months. As you know the Queen bread Yorkies down from much larger dogs and in the past couple of decades they have been breeding for smaller and smaller. My personal beleif is that the smaller they become the more they tend to loose in the soft "beauty" that was intended, but gain on the companionship.personal opionion only. My full size, so to speak, is much more layed back than the little ones, not as "yippy", more willing to learn, just as lovable and obviously (I think) better with children because you don't have to worry as much about him getting hurt. He has the soft baby doll face which I have not yet seen in the "teas" which have sharper features. I am no professional but through reading and observation this would be my thoughts. |
That's an interesting observation about the bigger dogs being less yippy. Probably somewhat true too. |

Jackson's bigger and not really a barker. He will bark when a stranger walks in the door, and that's his main thing. |
Buddy is big and is 16.3lbs. He's beautiful in every way. He's big and muscular, not fat at all. He get's many compliments on his good looks.:p They don't have to be small to be beautiful. |
Tea Pots/Crock Pots Zack and Zeke could be small at 11 and 13 lbs compared to some of the larger "pups" on YT. I saw a 18-20 lb'er at the groomer two weeks ago when the guys went in for their "fur cuts":D. Got to admit, more to love:). |
Does size matter? My daughter has a big yorkie, I'll have to ask her what he weighs. He whines a lot, but I think that is her fault. She treated it like talking when he was a little pup so that is the way he converses now! My sister-in-law bred a small girl that died right after giving birth to her pups. She was fine and then she was gone. If you don't already know, raising pups is more than giving them a bottle. Mom's licking is what stimulates their digestive system. Mom keeps them clean and so forth. Most vets will tell you that bigger is easier for them if there is a problem. I think the survival rate for bigger dogs after surgery or injury is better than the tinys. I guess I would rather have a kid too big than one too small. I should tell the truth, I never met a yorkie of any size that I did not LOVE! If they are not friendly it is because they need some special attention or they just pick their 2 legged friends carefully. |
Do you all think the larger ones are more hearty/healthy? |
Our new little rescue boy Freedom is on the larger side at 15lbs. I think he is super handsome!!! In our case though, he is a bit chubby and needs to slim down to about 11lb. |

Big Yorkies I am not sure about being hearty and healthy just know that I am afraid for the tiny yorkies. I have heard that a tiny or teacup should never be bred as it is just too dangerous for the mom. A trait from a bloodline that is several generations back could kill her. Just figure a little too big is better than a little too small. Not trying to promote giants, just that the tiny ones are so cute but don't let that push you into a choice that might not be wise. I subscribe to the theory that a yorkie will pick you, not the other way around. Sit on the floor or ground with the litter. Which one keeps coming back to you? Yep! you have been selected as a new owner! |
ahhh!!! i got a question!!! for u ladies with beautiful "teapots" (lol) do any of u remember how much ur puppy weighted at 7 months?? my louis is almost 7 months and weights 6.8 lbs. a lady at target saw him the other day and said she had a yorkie...she also mentioned his was louis size as a puppy and now weights 12 lbs as an adult. i personally like the bigger yorkies :D. i kinda got really excited when she told me she thought louis was gonna be on the bigger side :D. i love him so much , idc if he gets cliffords size :D. |
Well even though Reggie is a Yorkie mix, he weighed about the same thing at 7 mos and now at a year he is 9 1/2 lbs. He got up to 10 lbs even but when we switched him from Royal Canin to Wellness he dropped down to 9 1/2 and seems to be holding it there. I think it is because Wellness may have less fillers in it. Also he has been walking 1 mile with us almost every day now. I am not in the market for a new dog any time soon. We not only have Reggie but we have a 10 yo Collie and a 15 yo Rat Terrier. However, some day when Reggie is all we have I would like to get a purebred Yorkie and I tend to think I would rather have a medium to larger sized one rather than a tiny one. I worry about stepping on the tiny guys and them breaking legs too. |
My girl was 10 pounds. Zuzi was 10 pounds most of her life. She gained a pound the last year but I loved the larger size Yorkie. She used to go for 5 - 10 mile hikes with us in the woods with out a problem. Of course we never walk very fast so it was perfect for her. I'd love to have another larger Yorkie. Zuzi just passed away on 7/25/09 while we were away on vacation. I miss her very much. Shelley |
Chester is almost 11.5 lbs. The vet said he could stand to lose a pound. But I think he is the cutest thing ever. He was four or five pounds when I got him at 4 months old. I swear I don't remember him gaining weight. He was just big one day, lol. |
1 Attachment(s) Here's my big ol' teapot...Ranger is 14 pounds. More of him to love, I say..he's the neatest dog! |
