Am I choking him?? Recently we switched Sam from a harness to a hound collar (Here's a pic of the model we have: http://www.diamond-dog.com.au/images...und_collar.jpg) Sam isn't much of a puller, but even a little normal pulling would choke him on a normal collar. He starts coughing up a storm! However, with the harness, it rubs his belly and makes him bald and very itchy. I thought the hound collar would be a good idea since it's broad so it wouldn't choke him. However, I read online that Yorkie's should under no circumstances have collars due to their predisposition to collapsed tracheas. He hasn't choked on the hound collar like the normal collar, although he will still cough after a MAJOR pulling session (like today when he tried to get the giant dog at the park to play with him) but even with the harness he would hack after lots of pulling. I'm just concerned the hound collar could hurt him. Any advice? Should he only be in a harness? |
If he's hacking and gagging a lot, I would not use a collar period. The only time I use a leash/collar with Jackson (who is almost 13lbs) is when we're out back on his long retractable leash where he doesn't pull. On walks - he's wearing a harness. He doesn't pull on walks, either but I do find him easier to control with a harness rather than a collar. If you're worried about it matting/damaging his hair, a member here on YT makes SILK step-in harnesses that I've heard nothing but GREAT things about. Because they're silk, they don't matt up the air. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...elections.html |
It's not really the matting or aesthetic aspect of the harness bald spots I'm worried about. He goes bald in those spots and then starts to get dry itchy skin that makes him uncomfortable which makes me worry. Would the silk harness improve this? |
I just read some really good reviews in the product review section about a harness called the Buddy Belt. It's a little on the expensive side but I've read that they last a long time. I'm thinking about getting one for Tobie http://www.buddy-belts.com/ Maybe this harness would help with his itching? Maybe someone who has one can add some more input to this :) |
I noticed my Lola is getting some baldness underneath and I wasn't sure from what but now that you mention the harness rubbing it makes sense! She doesn't seem to be itchy though. I know her old owners used a collar on her and I don't believe in using them. I guess I will just deal with a little hair loss rather then the collapsing trachea! |
Fergus was so little he "fell out" of all the harnesses we got him in the beginning, so, I found the vest type fabric/velcro things worked great on him. They have a d ring in the back for the leash and adjust perfectly where he needs them just for his walk. I got a great tye dye one that I get comments on all the time! Just do a search for "harness vest", you will find a ton, including fancy party clothes! (now if only I had a girl!!) |
I like harnesses bacause I can lift him up if I have to in a hurry, can you do that with this collar. I have never seen this kind before. |
You should never use a collar on a toy breed dog as they can damage their delicate tracheas. Collapsed Trachea in Dogs |
