Ceeby has stopped eating!!!!!!!!! Help!!!!! 1 Attachment(s) I just got him Thursday and he ate a little Thursday night. Ate once yesterday pretty good for my hubby. Today he has only had a max of ten pieces of his dog food. I did not change it. She gave me the same food to bring home. He had two doses of Nutrical Thursday. Once at the breeders and once at bedtime here. Yesterday the vet said to continue to give him two or three doses of Nutrical per day. He has had two already today and I will give him another at bedtime. He is so tiny (nine ounces) that I am very concerned about hypoglycemia. My husband says he is not eating because of the Nutrical. Could that be it? I have tiny metal dishes for his food and water. When I sit him down in front of his food, he goes for the water, over and over. I am very concerned about the not eating. Any ideas? Thanks |
If his food is dry kibbles, you may need to wet it with warm water to soften it. You may also need to give him wet food. You can try cottage cheese and my there were times that my Rowdy would only eat the Gerber toddler chicken weenies. You can also put some kayro syrup on his food, even the wet food or the dry food softened with water to get him to eat. Keep trying with various things to see what he will eat. When Rowdy was little, sometimes he wouldn't eat unless I hand fed him - he would not eat it out of his dish, but would eat it out of my hand. Also, keep giving him nutracal if he doesn't eat. |
My vet told me the Nutrical can be an appetite suppresent. However he is so tiny I would still give it. You might try to water his dry food down a little or add moist food to his dry. I would just keep an eye on him. Chachi was finicy about eating when we first brought him home also. |
With each of my dogs, I have given them a choice of about five dog foods, and each has picked a different one! Piper would only eat Eukanuba, and Riley chose Science Diet. (I went online to the different companies for samples or coupons so it didn't cost much to try this.) All three of my dogs preferred to eat kibble when it is softened with water- just wet it good and let it sit for a little bit. I only do this for a special treat because the dry kibble is better for their teeth and gums. When my two dogs prior to Riley were sick, and wouldn't eat anything, no matter what I tried, the one irresistible thing was a little bit of warm, chopped-up hot dog. I also found that I could heat a slice of hot dog about the size of a penny in a little bit of water, and put the water on the kibble for flavor, and that would usually get them to eat the kibble as well. Hot dogs are very salty, so they never got more than enough to get them eating again. So far, Riley hasn't been sick, so he has only had dog food and whatever extremely gross things he can grab off the road- like long-dead sun-baked frogs, etc. |
I agree with Pipers mom post and remembered when Jewels was little I would give her those gerber chicken sticks. They are like hot dogs only small. |

CHloe was 8 oz when I got her and we had some problems getting her to eat too. He definelty needs to eat. My chloe had problems with hypoglycemia if she didnt eat every 4 hours when she was a puppy. I had to wet down her food and warm it up a little. I think it smelled better to her when I did that. You might give it a try. I would put a lttle karosyrup in his water since he hasnt been eating much food just to keep safe with the hypoglycemia. |
I also gave chloe nutrical. I dont think that kept her from eating. I always gave that to her after she ate. By the way, cute pictures! |
He is so cute :luvu: Looks like a new baby. :littleang He may be lonely, cause he is in a new enviroment. That is typical. I recommend to new owners a stuff animal for the puppy, especially at night time. It won't hurt to cuddle with him more than normal, until he gets use to his new home. As for food, when your cuddling with him, hand feed him a few pieces. I also agree a little water, makes it more apealing to the puppy. |

I disagree, Nutrical stimulates appetite. It's not uncommon when a pup goes to a new home not to eat normally for a day or two, sometimes a few days. A 9 oz. pup will not eat much anyway, a quarter teaspoon may be all he needs at a time. Yorkies often tend to be "nibblers". So, it may be that he's eating, but he just doesn't need much. If he really isn't eating, the all-meat turkey or chicken baby foods are easy on their tummies, and they will generally lick it off a spoon. If not, you just feed them a bit from a teaspoon every few hours, and generally, they will soon be eating it on their own. I would continue with the Nutrical every few hours as well. He may get used to eating the baby food and not want the dry food, but if he's only 9 ounces, I would worry about that later. Many breeders won't even let a pup go to a new home until it's 2 lbs. Be very careful that he doesn't get hypoglycemic. There's a website, www.shooterdog.com that has excellent advice. Good luck! |
When I first got Twinkie (she was 5 months old & 2 lbs) she didn't want to eat very much, which I think was due to stress. Try the cottage cheese thing and some canned food too or some chicken baby food. I offered all 3 of these to Twinkie twice a day and left her dry food out all day. Since she wasn't always keen on eating I had to syringe her some baby food a few times...she didn't enjoy this much but she HAD to eat so too bad for her. Since yours is so little it's very important that he eats. It could be the stress of a new home - Twinkie is the biggest pig in the house and now I can't leave food out all the time. You could probably get a syringe from your vet, at least you know he's getting something in his little tummy if you force feed him. JMO, it worked for me. :) |
For the fisrt few weeks Princess wouldn't eat we gave her cottage cheese and some chicken baby food. One day she walked over to her dish and just started eating. She's now 2 years old & 4 1/2 pounds. The karo syrup in their water is a good idea. I think the dry food is too hard for them, mixing warm water to make it moist works. Good Luck to You. When Dennis was 8 weeks old and slightly over a pound I was very concerned about him eating. The breeder recommended I give him chopped meat cooked in water then add rice. She also had a drink made she made her little one’s made with 1 tbs kyro syrup, 3 tbs of Yogurt, 1 egg, and 3 tbs of cottage cheese. The vet did not like the raw egg, but I did give this to Dennis whom loved it. You could try it without the egg though. It makes quite a lot but I put it in ice cube trays and froze it. I could either defrost it in the microwave or let it sit out for a bit. It worked out great! Sue |
