I am so sorry. My thoughts and prayers are with you all!

Did the vet say why Ruby can't have treats or dog food? Is there something in them that could harm her or delay her treatment? I hope the treatment is a success and that you'll have Ruby for a long time. Take care!

I'm sorry for Ruby. Sending prayers for her, you, and your family.

We found a lump on her shoulder the day after we brought her home from the breeder. When we took her to our vet, she said it was probably from a vaccine the breeder gave her and that it should go away over time. It did get smaller but that is what these tumors do. We went on vacation(Ruby too) and when we returned home she started biting at the lump. It became an open soar. We carried her back to the vet and they did a biopsy and you know the rest. It was the absolute worst day ever. We were new Yorkie owners and had a 7 month old baby with Mast Cell Cancer. Thankfully we have a wonderful vet and through a lot patience she has helped us find a treatment that works for our Ruby. It will be a year in August and she is doing great. We have had a few bumps in the road along the way but we will do anything it takes to keep her alive and healthy for as long as we can.

The no treats and no dog food is the common protocol for the Neoplasene treatment but that did not work for Ruby. You are supposed to put the liquid drops on cooked food because it helps her body absorb it better. The theory is take away all other food and it will work. Not with Ruby. She was never a good eater to begin with. She would go days without eating if it meant all she was going to get was home cooked food. Not your typical dog Huh? So now we keep a limited amount of dry food down so she can snack when she wants to and she gets a home cooked dinner. We don't put the Neoplasene on the food though because she can tell its there and won't eat it. It's bitter and has a nasty odor. So we put it on a small quarter sized piece of bread, ball it up and then wrap cheese around it or peanut butter. This has all been with the advise of our wonderful vet.

I'm really sorry to hear about Ruby's cancer. The shock of hearing that does kind of shut the mind down temporarily.

One of my dogs was diagnosed with lymphoma and I took her for chemo, about once a month for about two years. I saw and met a lot of people with pets with cancer and the dogs with mast cell really did well and I can't tell you how many were cured. It was really wonderful. The chemo protocols they have for that really see to work well. I remember one Pug/Beagle cross that was saved. Please have hope that Ruby will recover and have a long life.

I'm glad you have a wonderful vet working with you. I can only imagine how devastated you must have been when you first heard the news. Like I said before, you have so much going on with a new puppy, who would ever think of a cancer.

I have a friend who had a dog (can't remember what kind) who got sick with cancer. At the time, I had never had a dog (except for strays my dad would find abandoned where he worked in the projects when we were growing up. When she said she was taking her dog for chemo, I remember thinking, "She has really gone over the edge. Chemo for a dog?"

Well, now that I have had two dogs (Cinni, RIP 8/09,) and since I got Charlie as a puppy, I can certainly understand. I would do everything I could for Charlie (and I did for Cinni, though she didn't have cancer.) They so become part of our family. And I think it's different with these Yorkies, at least with me. There was something about Charlie, before I had even seen a picture, that I just "knew" he was for us.

I'll keep Ruby and your family in our prayers that she continues to do well.
