Collar for Obidience Trainig Hi all, a quick question I read here how everyone suggests not to put a collar on our babies because it could cause a trachea collapse, now my two are starting obedience on Sat. and the trainer says the only way to train is with a collar, Gizmo weighs 13.4 pounds and Stellina weighs 7.3 pounds should I worry or is this warning for the smaller ones. Oh yeah please wish me luck lol |
I recently took Brandi to obedience class. She weighs about 6 pounds. I, too, was concerned because they required a choke collar or prong collar - which I am against. So, I spoke to the trainer and we agreed that a slip lead would be the best choice for her. (This is the kind of lead they use in the show ring). This is the one I bought, and it worked great! .... I think that they are big enough for collars. I agree with your trainer for training! Once they are trained, which doesn't take long... they won't pull, and if you feel better with them in a harness for your day to day walks, go ahead. But if they resort back to pulling, resort back to the collar! And re-train! Good luck in school! |
thank you for your quick respnses, he doesn't use choke collars, doesn't believe in those he said a regular leather collar, and wants to use one lead to walk both, that should be veeeeeery interesting lol |
The reason that a collar is not recommended for use with a Yorkie is because of the risk of Collapsed Trachea. I'm sorry but I have to disagree with both the trainer and also the previous posters. It has NOTHING to do with the size of your Yorkie, Collapsed Trachea is a genetic condition and does not have to do with size. I would suggest either using a harness or a Gentle Leader head collar for your classes. May I ask where you are going for these classes? As for using one lead to talk both, there have been a few member here that have used the double lead and had neck injuries from them. Personally, I do not like these either. How would you like to be tied at the ankle to your brother or sister? It just reminds me of doing one of those games at a family reunion. Not pretty and everyone looks like a fool tripping over each other. One final thought on all of this..........if you have one that is 7 lbs and that is 14 lbs how is THAT going to work??????? |
2 Attachment(s) Sadie has been to numerous training classes. I started her out wearing a collar but I was uncomfortable with it. I bought her an easy walk harness and the training class is fine with it. It is a step in harness with the D ring in the front of the chest instead of behind her back. She weighs four pounds and the petite fits her. The first picture is an easy walk harness. I've also ordered a Walk Nice harness from Chattiesmom. I can't wait for it to get here! It is custom made to fit your dog. Also it is made of silk so it won't break their hair. It is shown in the second picture. I like it because it has a D ring in the front for training and also in the back for "fun" walking. My training class is perfectly ok with either of these. I'm also enclosing the link to the silk harnesses and leashes that Chattiesmom sells. There really are ways around the collar issue - they should work with you on it. If they won't I'd look for another training class! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...elections.html |
I don't think it's a good idea at all. The only way I'd use a collar (and still wouldn't want to) is if they were already trained not to pull. I used to use a collar and Ellie choked while pulling. She still has issues now and I regret ever using one. There are better options available. |
wow lots of things I didn't thnk about, but that's why I love this place and why you guys are here. These are private lessons to start then he'll integrate them to his classes. As how he'll do it to walk 2 dogs on one lead that are different in size, I haven't seen it with my own eyes, but he has a golden lab and a yorkie that he says use one lead without any problem.I'll ask him again if he's willing to use any other method with them, can't hurt to ask and I'll see from there sure don't want my little guys any harm. Thanks guys you're the best.xo |
My Yorkie is 7 kg/kilo's, he is always with a regular collar on ;) At first he pulled much and made some noise like he was choking (but he was not), i teached him to walk heel, and he is much better now :) If you dont wanna use a collar, you can always use a harness. |

Some think just because they have not had a problem yet, that it is not a dangerous practice. You never know how many times it will take to collapse a trachea. |
Exactly -- that's why I recommended the show lead in my first post -- it does not fit around the dogs neck / trachea - it has a chin strap where it rests and it goes right behind the dog's ears. This gave me more control than the harness and it was not an actual collar - so it was a happy middle ground between the two. |
