We're expecting...but my husband doesn't know it yet.
 

This Saturday afternoon, I'll be picking up my little girl. When do you think I should tell my husband?

I did something sneaky. Michael, my husband, is allergic and has asthma. I read that you can take a t-shirt, turn it inside out, and rub it on the dog for a while. I did just that to four of Michael's shirts...and he didn't know about it. He wore each shirt without a problem. Not reaction. One, in fact, is still wrapped around his pillow under the pillow case. When I told him what I had done, he was intrigued, but he still thinks he's going to be allergic. I pray he won't be. I bought the allergen reducing shampoo, the dander wipe, and the allergen control spray for the carpeting. I even bought a new vacuum cleaner that works better than the old one.

I called the Yorkie breeder this morning and she said I could pick her up. It was then off to the local grain store for Diamond puppy food (what the breeder uses), puppy wee wee pads, Nutri Cal, tooth paste and brush, crate, water bottle (the breeder has a water bottle attached to the side of their wire crate), collars, toys, and leads. I'm sure I missed something there that I bought, and it was a lot of money, but I know it was a good investment. :)

Unless your husband has an allergy to the saliva, he probably has allergies similar to mine. I am allergic to short haired, shedding dogs. I get itchy, my arms turn red (cause of course, i pet them), my eyes itch and my asthma acts up. I'm usually OK after an allergy pill and a shower.

I am NOT allergic to my Yorkies. I bathe them once a week (at least) in Buddy Wash. I keep them clipped short to that it's easy to blow-dry them after a bath and it's easier to keep them clean.

Be careful with all of those "allergen reducing" products. I'm allergic to the chemicals in them and they just cover up the problem. I use Buddy Wash which is all natural, and Simple Solution for accidents and wash their faces/feet with a warm washcloth and a tiny but of Buddy Wash. Laundry gets washed often (dog beds, blankets, etc.) in my regular organic laundry detergent.

When I got Sammy, I thought I was allergic to her but actually the person I got her from had just used a scented grooming spray. Once I washed it out, she could sleep on my pillow, no itching or sneezing :)

Yeayyy!! Congrats!!! How exciting!! You know my DH'S Mom is really allergic to anything lol and she watches peanut alllllllllll the time and never has had any problems!! So I wouldnt worry about that.

I agree. My whole family has allergies and they have never complained about my dogs. I definitely keep them cleaner than most dogs and they smell like lavender, not dog :) I hope you will be OK!!!

that is great keep those yorkies going. I have been told that yorkies don't bother people with asmetha at all, I have asmetha and they don't do a thing for me. I got one for that reason, and the fact that their hair is the closest to human hair that you can get it is just like human hair, so no allergies there .
I find that they are perfect all the way around and I now have two...

My mom is super allergic to dogs, cats, horses, etc etc. and Lucas has never bothered her. If he gives her a ton of licks, sometimes she gets a bit itchy, but other than that no issues.

Oh, this is hysterical! I'm doing the same thing. The hubby knows nothing! The baby girl will arrive Sept. 30th. I am gathering stuff like a squirrel. The excitement of anticipation is almost too much to bare. I've named her and everything. I hope it works out.......new husbands are harder to train than Yorkies I've heard.

Lol...great minds think alike. I've gathered all my Yorkie gear and have stashed it at my parent's house.

I'm now looking around my house and I think I found a good spot for her when I'm gone. I will need a dog gate. I am confused, though. I've read some posts where people say they will put their puppy in the crate when they're gone while others say they secure their puppy in a confined space. I've got a good size wire crate (24" x 17"), but I'm not sure. Any suggestions? She wouldn't be alone for long.

I plan to use a doggie playpen. I read on YT where someone put a p-pad, food and water, and a blankie all in the playpen for when you are not home or for night. A few days ago.....my playpen arrived and my husband said "what is this?" Rats! I sent it back! Now, I have to order it again. My birthday is in Sept. so my plan is to say....All I want is a puppy (I've been saying this for a year). I've been married since the mountains rose out of the sea so it will be a shame to trade him in for a puppy but girlllllllllllllllll, I've already PAID for the puppy!

I talked to the breeder and she uses a 24" x 18" wire crate with a pull-out pan for easy cleaning. She puts a wee wee pad in there along with the food in a stainless steel bowl that attaches to the crate, towels for snuggling, a toy, and a doggie water bottle. I plan to use this instead of a play pen since that's what the puppy is use to using. She did warn me that the puppy will more than likely shred the wee wee pad. That will be interesting. I've read here that a crate can be used for the Yorkies safe haven and for keeping the puppy in to keep her out of trouble. I'm looking forward to it.

Your husband will be fine. I have severe allergies which is why I picked a Yorkie for my dog. I have had allergies all my life and have always had to pick certain breeds that are allergy friendly. I also have allergy induced asthma. I did allergy shots for two years to try and reduce the amount of allergy meds I take daily. Cats have sent my father to the hospital and I am just as allergic to them. I have no food allergies but have major environmental allergies. I don't even sneeze because of Scooter. Be sure to bathe your baby regularly as it really helps to reduce the allergens in your home. Also, you my want to buy some pet wetwipes. I use them on Scooter after he has played in the yard to also eliminate any issues.

Scooter even sleeps in bed with me (he likes to get under the covers). If I can survive with him by my side and severe allergies, your husband shouldn't have an issue.

Sounds like you are on the right track shopping wise. Besides the pet wipes, I would also recommend a harness. Scooter uses a Puppia harness. We use it for training and walks. The rest of the time he wears a normal collar. Yorkies are expensive but the love they give you makes it all worth it.

A dog instinctively keeps his/her den CLEAN, I have read that putting a pee pad in their crate teaches them it's OK to dirty in their den/Crate. I used a childs gated xpen, inside I put her small crate with the door open, water bowl, food bowl, a pee pad a few steps across from her crate. I did this same setup at night but had the pen close to my bed. Once she could hold it all night, she started sleeping in her crate without the pen or pee pad.

She is now potty trained to go on pad or outside :D

I also did what you gals are doing, brought the puppy home surprising my hubby, he loves all 3 :D:thumbup:

The cat's out of the bag...or the dog is lol...I told Michael this morning that we're expecting a girl on Saturday. He seemed uneasy about it, but okay. It feels like I'm a kid at Christmas and I can hardly wait.

lovelylf1, I do have an allergen reducing wipe for her. Thank you for letting others know about it, though. I also have a reflective harness for her. I just hope it fits. I bought the smallest one the grain store had lol. I can't wait to start buying outfits. Can you tell I'm going to be one of those annoying Yorkie lovers?

How exciting! Congratulations! I'm glad your hubby didn't freak out :eek:. I have horrible allergies to shedding dogs but absolutely no problems with our yorkies :) so I think he'll be fine as far as that goes.
You might consider slowly switching you new baby to a higher quality puppy food from the diamond- there's a great list of high quality foods in the health/diet section.

Im was just wondering why you couldnt talk to him about it too begin with instead of risking that something happen with his Allergies. My brother has Asthma and he is Allergic to all dogs including a Yorkie. I know everyone is going to get mad at me but it just seems like Michael would have given it a try without the trap since he didnt oppose when you told him.

Congratulations. you are in for the best ride of your life. Raising a yorkie is like no other experience. They are cute, sweet, smart (almost TOO smart for their own good), and playful. I almost miss Sushi's baby days, although I love her even more now, and more and more every day. Enjoy!

If your addiction to yorkie outfits is going to be anything like mine, your yorkie's wardrobe is going to be way more extensive that a lot of PEOPLE's wardrobes you know!!!!! :) One of my favorite brands for Sushi is Wooflink (a lot of other yorkie owners love it too). Check them out, they are super adorable. and comfy at the same time. Sushi has a few of their onesies, couple of sweaters, dresses, and a super cute parka. So does my Maltese boy.

So what's the new arrival's name?

I will have to take a look at Wooflink. It sounds like my kind of shopping.

I have a name in mind, but I won't know if it fits until I meet her. I'll post her name and pics here this weekend.

Congratulations and hope hubby has no problems with your new addition. Sounds like you gave him a good test before bringing your baby home. All of your purchases sound good -- but I would add a harness and only use a collar for looks and maybe to hang an ID tag to if you like. If you are going to attach a lead/leash, please use a harness instead. Yorkies are very prone to collapsed trachea and should never have pressure put to their throats.

I've had 2 sinus surgeries due to chronic allergies and have never had a problem with Lola. That's why I got a Yorkie. I love what you did to test DH's allergies LOL I don't think he'll have a problem. If Lola's not playing she's right here beside me. She also sleeps with me every night with no issues. Congrats on your new baby! I can't wait to see pictures!
