I talked to the breeder and she uses a 24" x 18" wire crate with a pull-out pan for easy cleaning. She puts a wee wee pad in there along with the food in a stainless steel bowl that attaches to the crate, towels for snuggling, a toy, and a doggie water bottle. I plan to use this instead of a play pen since that's what the puppy is use to using. She did warn me that the puppy will more than likely shred the wee wee pad. That will be interesting. I've read here that a crate can be used for the Yorkies safe haven and for keeping the puppy in to keep her out of trouble. I'm looking forward to it.

I have allergies and asthma
 

Your husband will be fine. I have severe allergies which is why I picked a Yorkie for my dog. I have had allergies all my life and have always had to pick certain breeds that are allergy friendly. I also have allergy induced asthma. I did allergy shots for two years to try and reduce the amount of allergy meds I take daily. Cats have sent my father to the hospital and I am just as allergic to them. I have no food allergies but have major environmental allergies. I don't even sneeze because of Scooter. Be sure to bathe your baby regularly as it really helps to reduce the allergens in your home. Also, you my want to buy some pet wetwipes. I use them on Scooter after he has played in the yard to also eliminate any issues.

Scooter even sleeps in bed with me (he likes to get under the covers). If I can survive with him by my side and severe allergies, your husband shouldn't have an issue.

Sounds like you are on the right track shopping wise. Besides the pet wipes, I would also recommend a harness. Scooter uses a Puppia harness. We use it for training and walks. The rest of the time he wears a normal collar. Yorkies are expensive but the love they give you makes it all worth it.

A dog instinctively keeps his/her den CLEAN, I have read that putting a pee pad in their crate teaches them it's OK to dirty in their den/Crate. I used a childs gated xpen, inside I put her small crate with the door open, water bowl, food bowl, a pee pad a few steps across from her crate. I did this same setup at night but had the pen close to my bed. Once she could hold it all night, she started sleeping in her crate without the pen or pee pad.

She is now potty trained to go on pad or outside :D

I also did what you gals are doing, brought the puppy home surprising my hubby, he loves all 3 :D:thumbup:

The cat's out of the bag...or the dog is lol...I told Michael this morning that we're expecting a girl on Saturday. He seemed uneasy about it, but okay. It feels like I'm a kid at Christmas and I can hardly wait.

lovelylf1, I do have an allergen reducing wipe for her. Thank you for letting others know about it, though. I also have a reflective harness for her. I just hope it fits. I bought the smallest one the grain store had lol. I can't wait to start buying outfits. Can you tell I'm going to be one of those annoying Yorkie lovers?

How exciting! Congratulations! I'm glad your hubby didn't freak out :eek:. I have horrible allergies to shedding dogs but absolutely no problems with our yorkies :) so I think he'll be fine as far as that goes.
You might consider slowly switching you new baby to a higher quality puppy food from the diamond- there's a great list of high quality foods in the health/diet section.

Im was just wondering why you couldnt talk to him about it too begin with instead of risking that something happen with his Allergies. My brother has Asthma and he is Allergic to all dogs including a Yorkie. I know everyone is going to get mad at me but it just seems like Michael would have given it a try without the trap since he didnt oppose when you told him.

Congratulations. you are in for the best ride of your life. Raising a yorkie is like no other experience. They are cute, sweet, smart (almost TOO smart for their own good), and playful. I almost miss Sushi's baby days, although I love her even more now, and more and more every day. Enjoy!

If your addiction to yorkie outfits is going to be anything like mine, your yorkie's wardrobe is going to be way more extensive that a lot of PEOPLE's wardrobes you know!!!!! :) One of my favorite brands for Sushi is Wooflink (a lot of other yorkie owners love it too). Check them out, they are super adorable. and comfy at the same time. Sushi has a few of their onesies, couple of sweaters, dresses, and a super cute parka. So does my Maltese boy.

So what's the new arrival's name?

I will have to take a look at Wooflink. It sounds like my kind of shopping.

I have a name in mind, but I won't know if it fits until I meet her. I'll post her name and pics here this weekend.

Congratulations and hope hubby has no problems with your new addition. Sounds like you gave him a good test before bringing your baby home. All of your purchases sound good -- but I would add a harness and only use a collar for looks and maybe to hang an ID tag to if you like. If you are going to attach a lead/leash, please use a harness instead. Yorkies are very prone to collapsed trachea and should never have pressure put to their throats.

I've had 2 sinus surgeries due to chronic allergies and have never had a problem with Lola. That's why I got a Yorkie. I love what you did to test DH's allergies LOL I don't think he'll have a problem. If Lola's not playing she's right here beside me. She also sleeps with me every night with no issues. Congrats on your new baby! I can't wait to see pictures!
