Behind the Name Do any of you have a story behind the names of your pets? For example, my toy poodle's name was Zach. He was a gift from my aunt for my 16th birthday. This aunt had lost her 23 year old son (named Jason) several years before this. By chance, Zach's sire's name was Jason's Yankee Patch and his dam's name was Harbin's Precious Gem. So when deciding on Zach's AKC name, I combined the two and came up with Jason's Precious Memory. Then I chose Zachary as his call name because it means Remembered by God. Chloe's name doesn't have such a neat story, though. I'm a huge fan of all things Irish, particularly clovers/shamrocks. So I wanted to call her Clover, but it just didn't quite fit her. So we shortened it to Chloe and gave her the middle name Belle (...you have to have something to call them when they are in trouble!!) :) Then for her registered name, I combined mine and my husband's names ("Jer"emy & Chel"sey" = Jersey) and we've got Jersey's Four Leaf Clover. So, how about you? Do you have a story for how you came up with your names? -C |
On our first date we went to see the movie "The fifth element" and the name Leeloo Dallas Multipass stuck with my hubby since then. We have 2 children and drive a Honda Element. So when we decided to get our puppy we couldn't all agree on a name until my hubby said "what about Leeloo Dallas?" and we all said YES! She's "the fifth element" of our family :) |
One of my sister dog's registered name is : Petite Belle PEPPER One of my dog's registered name is: Tiny Bitto SALT. One of their offsping registered name is: Dasha Pepper Ann Salt. Do you get it? |
Harleys!!!!! We are a Harley lovin family. We have 2 dogs...one is Scooter (another name for a motorcycle) her little brother is Sprocket (a part of the engine) His registered name is Little Mister Sprocket Panhead Davidson. As I said we LOVE HARLEYS..we have 2 bikes and 2 dogs...for now..lol |
I knew that my Yorkie boy would be bigger than 7 pounds. I new I wanted a "G" name to go with my skin kid "Grant". We have a "kids names begin with the same letter" thing in my family. And I wanted my middle name, cause my skin kid got the DH's middle name.. "Big Boy Gunnar Lee" Donna (sister to; Dorri and Darcy. And an Aunt to; Joshua, James, Jacob, Jared, John, Jilliann, Jeffrey and Jason) |
:D I didn't even name "peanut" the night I brought him home.. dh was having a party and one of his friends saw "peanut" and the friend was really drunk and he said " he looks like a little peanut"!....I guess the name just stuck with him lol :D  |
Barley was named by the rescue group we got him from and snce he was so sick and going through so many changes I didn't want to change his name. my daughter's friend asked me why I named him after a grain, I said well it's not because I love beer or anything but and then explained. She's 17 so she laughted. However, my GP is named Garrett after a subdivision I grew up in with my GP Buffie. I had wonderful memories there before my parents divorced and tore it all up. So when I got my GP I decided to bring it full circle. Great thread!!!! Love all the stories!!!! Especially yorkieagility's :yelrotflm |

My daughter named my little Brody after Adam Brody from the tv series The OC . . I named my little girl Rhianna after a rabbit that I had had for almost 10 years . . .her name was Rhiannon . . .she was a great mama rabbit and acted very much like a dog . . .she even walked on a leash . . .:D I really wanted to name her Rhiannon, but my husband insisted that I already had a pet named that, so I shortened it . . .:p |
I love music and most of my pets have been named after songs. My yorkie's name is "Mr. Mojo Risin' " after the Doors' song. My Arabian gelding's name is "Jokerman" from a Bob Dylan song. My cat's name is Smokey, but she was already named when I got her. :D I didn't have a Yorkie when I joined YorkieTalk, so I used my horse's name as my name here. It's kind of misleading, as I'm not a man. :D |
My beloved Bichon, Emma passed the week after Memorial Day in 2008. I wasn't planning on getting another dog or even think about one until THIS summer. One day I went looking and came across this beautiful Morkie. Needless to say she came to me last September. I truly believe she was sent to me by Emma. I decided to name her Bella Mia....my beauty because of my fondness for having been to Italy in 2002. She is the love of my life and brings me joy each and every day. Many think her name came from the movie hit Twilight...but I haven't read the books nor seen the movie. I can see that many YT members have named theirs Bella as well. She is called Bellamia....Bellaboo....Pretty girl.....and responds to anything. She loves being the center focus of attention....loves being petted and cuddled...enjoys traveling....and this summer went swimming in her life vest in the Thousand Islands. I can't imagine my life before her and give thanks daily that somehow our paths crossed when I least expected it.:) |
We had Baxter for a week before we came up with a name. All the names I wanted my husband would say - well I know someone I don't like with that name. I was reading a Jack Higgins book and there is a minor character in all of his books named Baxter so I said what about that and it stuck. We didn't register Baxter so that is his only name. Nothing fancy. He's been neutered and I just didn't go to the trouble of registering. We give him a different middle name from time to time based on his behaviour - IE Tazmanian devil! |
I have been a big fan of Disney movies for years. Needless to say I can repeat the lines to so many movies that it drove my parents nuts. Well when I first got my girl it took me awhile to figure out who I wanted to call her after. I looked up all the princess I could think of and Briar Rose popped up. Briar is the princess off of Sleeping Beauty. So I named her Briar Raeley Rose for her papers, we just call her Raeley. Now when I got my son his little guy I figured we would keep with the Disney theme and the prince off of Sleeping Beauty is Prince Phillip. So my son's little guys is named Prince Riley Phillip, and we just call him Riley. Now for when their litter gets here I think I will call all the babies Disney character names to continue the trend. |
Clarence was my Mum's pup, until she passed away. & she named ALL of her male pets Clarence....turtle, fish & yorkie...go figure. Keegan is Irish for "little firey one"...perfect for him. Sophie, our rescue, came with her name but I call her Sweet Sophie. She coming along nicely. |
My father passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 66 in January. I got my first dog in May. I named her after my dad : Camel. Camel was my dad's nickname because he ran so slow. Her name was supposed to be Sayres after Gayle Sayres. I have a cat named Piccolo after Brian Piccolo and a cat named Sweetness after Walter Payton (all Chicago Bears players). I had two cats that have passed away Dizzy Dean (Chicago Cubs) and Shoeless Joe Jackson (Chicago Black Sox). |
Thanks for sharing all of your great stories!! I'm really enjoying hearing about how other people come up with names for their pets. I have to admit that Dasha Pepper Ann Salt is just adorable!! :) -C |
Well Kaji's name came from an Anime. The character by this name was a ladies man, smooth and always had girls throwing themselves at him. I liked the name cause I thought it was cute, short, and different. Little did I know my Little Kaji Bear would be a ladies man! He only follows me or my mom arround, and I have lost count of how many times he's slipped a paw, or his head down my shirt in the 2 short weeks I've had him.... yeah I got a dirty little boy that really likes the girls! :p My boy's full name is Kaji Peter. The Peter part really has no significance, it's the name of my school's mascot, Peter the Anteater (UCI). I liked it and thought it would help my parents learn his name, and pronounce it. They are native spanish speakers, and spanish is the language we use at home, I thought Peter would be easier for them to say. Instead, my boy has several names at my parents house. He's "Kachis," "chiquiado" (meaning spoiled), poopies, and my favorite "cachito." The last one actually has a story behind it. Cachito means a tiny bit of something. My parents both grew up on farms in Mexico where each had a dog. The dogs they had were big dogs. Then Kaji came into the picture and when they saw him, all 6 lbs of him, they thought he was a puppy. I told them he was fully grown and they said he was a "cachito" of a dog because he is so small. |
As a teen and young adult my whole life was music. Motley Crue was and is my favorite band, when I went to pick my puppy out there was one running around slipping everywhere, crashing over his brother and just being generally nuts. I picked him up and as we sat in the car a Motley crue song came on the radio and he went crazy, running and jumping almost like he does now after a bath. As soon as the song ended he crawled back up in my lap and went to sleep. My mom then told me that he is a perfect fit with my family because he's wild and crazy just like that band i'm always listening to, so I knew I had his name MOTLEY. As he's gotten older its just more of a perfect fit everyday. |
We have two soon to be three- Roxie got her name after Roxie Hart from the musical Chicago! It is perfect she is my little stinker and puts on the sweetest front! Ryder we got after my hubby was in an accident in his semi- I told him that when he was potty trained that Ryder would be his little riding buddy, turns out Ryder is not a rider at all! Kenworth is our newest boy and I still am debating the name but my hubby loves it! He had always drove a Kenworth truck and when he was in his accident that truck didnt crumble it saved him and I thought it would have some meaning to us. We will see... |
Maverick got his name from Tom Cruise's character in the movie Top Gun. He was and is always trying to get away with something and then acting charming to get away with it. I registered him as Maverick's Peppercorn though after our beloved late miniature schnauzer Roberta's Peppercorn (Pepper). Cosmo is in truth named after Kramer from Seinfeld. We I got him he was in the awkward teenage stage and he had this funky wavy head hair that stood straight up! However, he is registered as Jupiter's Cosmic Psyche. I went the astrological route though with his offical name...Jupiter because happy/merry, are moods ascribed to Jupiter's astrological influence. And he is one happy litle dog. |
Winston doesn't really have a long naming story. When I first saw his photos (webpage of the breeder since he was a sire she was selling) my first thought was "he's not a Copper, he seems more like a Winston to me". No idea why on earth I thought it... but I did. In the end it seems pretty fitting to me. Depending on who you listen to, a lot of places/sources will say the name Winston means "Joy" of "stone of joy". True meaning or not, he really is my stone of joy! |
I was going to name mine Chloe too but instead I kept her name Niyah because that is all she knew for the 2 years her previous owner called her so I thought she should keep the same name. Plus, I thought Niyah was a pretty orginal name she came up with. So i am hoping when I register her, the name Niyah is available. |
We got Wylie first - and he is named after one of me and hubby's favorite poets, Elinor Wylie. His full name is Wylie "The Floop" Fitzsmudge. Fitzsmudge came from the fact we almost named him "Smudge" and bc my cat's last name was Fitzgerald. "The Floop" is his nickname and we use it as much as, if not more than, we use Wylie. Marcel Verdel Purcell is named after Marcel Proust and "Verdell", the dog in "As Good As It Gets" - and then he needed a 3rd name of course, so he instantly became....Marcel Verdel Purcell. |
These are there short names. Jackson- The little boy from the movie "Steel Magnolias" love that movie! Gracie- The girl on "The Nanny" Tucker- He was named that already and I loved it, so kept it! Rosey- I just loved the name "Rosey Posey" LOL Abigayle- My DH loved the name Abby, so I spelled it close to the breeder's name Bentley- Love the car! |
Scrubs is one of our favorite tv shows. I wanted a silly name to match my guys personality and Turkleton seemed like a good fit. We mostly call him "Turky" or just "Turk", but once in a while(mostly when he gets into trouble) we use his full name. lol |
Frankie didn't acquire is name for several days when we had him. We kind of wanted everyone in the family to agree on it. My longtime friend, Frank is my vet. We like Frank Sinatra--so our puppy became Frankie. My vet dotes on his namesake and Frankie gets very special treatment there. |
We have 4 human kids and they each had ideas for what to name our "someday" dog. They had seen pictures of our puppy but did not know it was ours. Instead of having them fight when we actually got the dog, we decided to tell them the owners already named him. We emailed the list to the family. When they saw "Chewbacca" they laughed and said they were already calling him that because his face kind of looked like the star wars character. He was also the first to get his teeth and start chewing on everything. We call him Choo Choo quite often. So funny that there is a "Frankie" here because that is what my 5 year old wanted. We have no idea why except it is cute. |
Sunshine We named our furbaby Sunshine because we like being able to say we have sunshine everywhere we go:) We sing all the "sunshine" songs to him (except "Walking on Sunshine", lol). Some people seem to think it is a funny name for a Boy but he does have a great disposition so we think it suits him Very well. His full name is Sunshine Stardust Honey Jazz on his CKC papers (to reflect his dam and sire's pedigrees). |
George already new his name when we got him and my hubby's second name is George and hubby's deceased Mums name was Georgina and his uncles name was George, hubby also a fan of Beatles (George Harrison) and the english footballer George (can't remember his last name-someone famous who played for Manchester United) and King George was from Yorkshire and anyway my boy looks like a George |

I can't remember what we were going to call her, I think it was Pebbles that we had agreed on. But the breeder wouldn't let us touch the babies until the day we took them home and the moment I held her, I just knew she was Bluebelle. It all fitted, she was born the day Tinkerbelle had died and I just felt it. |
