marking after laser neuter procedure?(frustrated!) Help! We brought Turky home yesterday and he's doing wonderful so far with the bathroom aspect. HOWEVER, he's still marking! :( It's always the same spot. The entrance between the kitchen and great room. Ever since that one night when he was acting all goofy(I posted about this last winter...I'll see if I can dig up the old link a little later in case some of you need back ground on that). Now, he still wants to mark there. Here's the thing...Turk never had an issue with marking until that night which happens to be a good 6-7 weeks after his laser neuter. This is what has me baffled! Isn't the neutering suppose to help stop marking behavior?? Like I said, he never marked before the procedure, so this all has me stumped and very frustrated. |
this link explains what started the marking....(he was neutered in late January and I posted this in February, so I guess this behavior started only shortly after his surgery) http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...eeped-out.html |
Marking is an instinctive behavior and neutering does not always curb or eliminate it. Btw, I own a 4 dogs....two which mark and one of those...is a female. |
Maybe he's doing it because he's been away at training camp? I have a girl so I'm not really sure about this. By the way, she marks too. Not at home but when we visit a friend of ours. Vivian |
I have 3 and none of them have ever marked in the house but I have a large backyard and we also have an english bulldog so my 2 oldest yorkies will mark (one female one male) the spots in the backyard after the english bulldog. I think I would be very frustrated if one started marking in the house too! All I can think of is putting a piddle pad there to save your flooring and to prevent odor... I wish I had better advice... Maybe someone else has more experience than me. |
Clean the area with an enzymatic cleaner, may need 2 or 3 treatments. Sometimes it can take months for the hormones to get out of their systems. When I brought my newly rescued Yorkie home she had been spayed a week earlier. She humped everything in sight! Talk about panic ... all I could think of was oh my gosh what have I gotten myself into this time?????? That was in April, I removed her favorite humpy thing, and now I had almost forgotten that she did that. I was seriously beginning to look for replacement hormones for dogs!!!! |
Hi, I don't have marking problems but I wanted to share some things I have read that may help. If he is marking in one certain place, clean the area with the enzymatic cleaner mentioned above.... then bring a bed and toys to that spot encourage him to play there with a bullystick to help him forget about marking the spot. Hopefully this will nip it. When you see him about to lift the leg, say No, take him outside and tell him to pipi there, I know its 2 different things, but it may help. The other thing is put a belly band on him, if he marks he won't wet the area, when he realizes it.... perhaps it will discourage him from marking. Good luck. |
Have you thought about belly bands? These really help with my males. |
Neutering only stops the dog from making new testosterone through the testicles, the testosterone that is already in his blood is still working, so you won't see any relief from marking for at least a month, until the blood testosterone level lowers. While the testes make the bulk of testosterone, the adrenal glands make some too, and the amount varies considerably between dogs, and this is why female dogs have been know to mark. The sooner you can neuter, the less likely a male will mark because you aren't allowing the dog to reach puberty when these changes start occurring. I recommend cleaning spots with Natures' Miracle, and following directions carefully, you have to give the enzymes time to work. Also, taking him on walks and allowing him to mark outside and offering praise for this can help alleviate his biological need for marking. Even neutered dogs who never mark in the house will mark outside, and this might help discourage his marking in the house. If it's only one spot in the house, I wonder if you could construct some temporary barrier, so that he could not reach that spot? Also, I've read that some people recommend putting a dog's food and water in a spot to discourage repeated peeing in the area. You'd want to clean thoroughly first! :D |
