Issue: "Is my lawn a toilet?" I was walking Ninja today around my neighborhood. He usually sniffs other peoples lawns and pees on them. I also bring a bag to clean up his poop too. So he was sniffing away on some guys lawn and he was standing at his door. Then he asks me "Is my lawn a toilet?" I always see people walking their dogs and letting them pee on lawns, poles, corners, etc. I didn't think that it was unwelcome as long as you clean up the poop. Am I suppose to train my dog not to pee on other peoples lawns? If so, where is he suppose to go when I walk him? He usually goes in a litter box but when I walk him, he'll just go around marking his territory. Or is it just a matter of opinion? |
Some people are funny about it but most arent. As long as your picking up the poop I wouldnt worry about it. |
I once had a lady tell me she didn't think "they would appreciate me letting my dog pee and poop all over their yard" in reference to the yard we were next to - not hers. At the time we weren't even peeing, just sniffing. I always clean up the poop, but it never ocurred to me that pee on the grass at the street would bother people. We never walked that way again. She wasn't a dog person, whereas the lady whose yard it was, had 2 of her own, who I often saw walking them as well. I would say matter of opinion, but even still I've been very conscious of it ever since then, and I try and rush my boys along to the "safe" potty area (no front yards). |
I would just reply innocently, "Gosh, it doesn't look like a toilet to me!" and let that be it. I think as long as you have a bag to pick up poop, you are OK> |
Pee is ok MY answer to that man would b , Yes, when the dogs needs to pee, if the dog poop I will clean it up. I have a corner lot and everyone and their mother walks their dogs on my lawn , that I take sooooo good care of. I don't mind the pee , but if u don't pick up the poop I will b all over u and if u tell me u don't have a bag I will give u one. I can't belives people walk their dogs with out a bag or bags. What makes u think I should pick up after your dog. I walk my all the time, and I have a few bags with me. bark@ulater!!!! manina, miley:aimeeyork, max:animal36 |
Sounds like something my mom would say! She gets mad when her neighbors dog urinates in her yard..it can cause "brown spots" in the grass. I always try to walk my dogs in "common areas" away from anyones actual front yard.... |

I never let Morgan walk on their main lawn, but she does go on the piece of lawn between the side walk and the street. I was told that technically the city owns that piece which is why you'll see them doing ripping it up when doing street construction or you'll see them planting trees without asking the house owner. at least that's how it is in my city. So next time i'd be a smart ass and tell them it isn't their lawn. |
To be honest, I think he has a point. What if someone wants to walk barefoot on their lawn? Also, we all know that when we pick up poop off grass, it's not always a surgical operation. There are not a lot of lawn in my area, but I don't let Thor pee on flowerbeds or store fronts. He gets to pee on garbage cans, street lamps, mail boxes, etc. Poop is done right on the side walk, and picked up. |
I have to agree that he has a point. I don't particularly like people letting their dogs use my front yard to pee and poop. I make sure my dogs go potty before we start our walk and only release them (if need be) to go in the desert areas (in phoenix there's not really that much grass lol) that are not part of anyone's yard. I carry a bag just in case but their walk is for walking not going potty. |

good point! i do this too |

When I walk my dog we always walk near the devil strip ( the part of grass next to the road) I always try to make sure that she does not do anything in peoples front yards. Some people are very particular about there lawns . That is how my dad is . His lawn is beautiful and he probably would have said the same thing. |
I never let Lacey walk on a neighbors's lawn. We always use the sidewalks or common areas. To be honest, I would not be happy if someone allowed their pets to use my lawn either. |
My 2 that are pad trained only go inside and the one that goes outside only goes in my yard so I don't run into that, but my understanding is if you walk them on the street side (parkway) that is city property and as long as you clean up the poop that's fine. When I had my Pom I never let her on people's lawn. |
I mean, I understand where he is coming from, however since I'm a dog person, it doesn't bother me if you allow your dog to go on my lawn. But I could see if you don't have dogs that it would bother you. I live on a 3 acre property so we don't live in a neighborhood, but 3x a week I drive Jackson to a neighborhood to walk him and I allow him to pee on the corners of the grass, but not like in the middle of someone's yard or anything. Poop is always picked up. Over at my dad's house, it's a neighborhood with about 12 houses but it's still in the "country" and basically all but our dogs are off leash and all over the place... so they poop and pee all over, lol. |
I guess I'm a "meanie" because I do not like for my neighbors to allow their dog to potty and/or poo in my yard....which they used to let her do both in our yard and then take her back home. :thumbdown It does burn the grass and causes brown spots. Even if it's the part of the yard that the city owns (between the sidewalk and street), I still think that is rude because it is part of the look of the rest of your lawn. My city doesn't take care of this part of the grass, even though it technically belongs to them.....my husband completely takes care of it, just like the rest of our yard. I just, personally, would not allow my dog to potty anywhere even close to someone's yard. |

Hmm, very good points. I see both sides. I guess I never thought about it before until someone actually said something. It's hard to keep my hyper Yorkie off peoples lawns when I'm walking him though. I always feel bad for yanking at him. I walk him around the block before I go to work and I'm usually running late so I can't take him far. I guess I should try and wake up earlier to take him to more public areas. =_='' Hm, I also didn't know that urine was bad for lawns? I know someone that use to encourage their kid to pee in their backyard on the grass.. |
Ha! Well, SOME nitrogen is good for the lawn, but for people who are into their lawns, they are probably already providing the right nutrients. By the way, a "disciplined" walk can tire your dog out more because it requires both body and mind focus -- it might work out better for your dog and the lawn. |

I keep all of mine in the fenced back yard only, because so many where I live (country road) let their dogs run loose and they do use my front yard as a toliet. I would not mind an occasional brown spot in the grass to contend with, but I do mind those mountains of poo that the huge dogs leave. Hit one of those with a lawn mower and you will stink up a two block area for the day! I also mind that disease is spread from urine as well as feces. Leptospirosis for instance, is caused by bacteria that are spread from urine of infected animals. One variety, Leptospira canicola, is mainly spread by dogs. There are others too. I can't know that all of the neighbor dogs are disease free. If I had my druthers, no other animals would be using my lawn -- then I would feel free to let my own on it all instead of making them stay in the back. But if I could just get part of my druthers it would be to keep the dung heaps out of my yard. |
One funny little thing about Thor. One of the apartments we regularly walk by has a set of stairs leading to the entrance, and a bedraggled welcome mat at the bottom of them. There is something about the mat that says to Thor, "I command you to poop on me!" Every single time we pass by, he tries to squat on it. |
I don't let my two go in anyone's yard. I just feel like it's common courtesy more than anything else. We do have some people who allow theirs to use our "toilet" and I would definitely prefer that they not go there, but it happens. I too worry about any diseases that might be passed. The one that infuriates me more than a dog is my next door neighbor's cat. It wanders day and night, has knocked birds right off my feeders and eaten them (once in front of my grandkids) and has taken to using my bushes as his own personal litterbox. I've tried talking to them...their answer is that's just a cat's natural instinct. My natural instincts aren't very nice when it comes to their cat!!! |
The cat is not burying his waste? |
Oh no....just leaving it right there for the world to share in. Of course he chooses an area right near my backdoor...which USED to be where I took my babies out to go. I guess I'm just getting old, but I really don't understand the total lack of consideration for another person. I confess I've had visions of scooping it all up and hurling it over to their yard. I know, childish, but sometimes it makes me smile!!!! |
Oh my gosh, this has been an ongoing issue with the tenants across from us. They rent from my father-in-law and our backyards are side by side.... Year after year, doesn't matter who's living there, really, but the neighbors walk their dog through their yard into my backyard to go to the bathroom....LOL!!! I'm not kidding!!! I've fought long and hard to get them pooping on their side...LOL!!! I just can't imagine, in my wildest dreams, walking my dogs into their backyard to poop!!! Now that is funny....well, maybe not funny but something.... |

I'm surprised about the cat, it should instinctively bury its waste. I don't have a cat, but I am one of those people who thinks cats are happier roaming around their neighborhood all day and then coming inside to sleep. |
I don't think I'd mind so much if they took him inside at night, but it's nothing for him to be out all over the neighborhood making all kinds of noise, which in turn gets every dog in the neighborhood upset. He has really become the cat that nobody else in the neighborhood likes, and it's truly not his fault. Bad owners in my book! |
