When unleashed dogs approach.?? Hi all. We have just come back from our hols. Dustie was kept on a leash at all times on the beach walking and running on an extendable lead. On several occassions other dogs that were free approached us at speed..My Dustie just freaked...I didn't want to pick him up really..as I want him to get used to other dogs..but several times I did...as he seemed so scared..and when a large dog approaches with its owner some distance away what would you do.? He is 5 half months old...but he seems really scared of other dogs...not too bad around people.. What do you all do with your yougsters at this early stage in their life.? In the past I have always had an older Yorkie to take charge of my new pup..and this is meant that any other dog was always seen away by the older yorkie who took care of my pup. Now Dustie is on his own...! Why oh why do other people think it is great fun to watch their dogs bound up to a tiny pup and then say.."He only wants to play"...sometimes it makes me so annoyed really.. Chrisann. |
Oh- I hate that people let their big dogs run loose like that!!!! It's just not fair! I understand your not wanting to pick your baby up to not make him overly fearful or make him more anxious, but it's so scary cause these big dogs have the potential to really hurt our little ones- even if they are not meaning to. I carry Muzzle- Dog Mace whenever I am out with my little ones. 42801 - Muzzle Dog Repellent Pepper Spray, Belt Clip & Keychain, 14 Grams (.49 oz.) I hope I never have to use it, but I want to have it to be able to stop an attacking dog if needed. I do pick my little ones up if a big dog is off leash and near us- I just don't want to risk it. I don't know what the right answer is for you, but for me- I'd rather have mine be a little more fearful than risk having a big dog make a quick move and hurt or kill my babies. |
I would pick him up, just as I would a small child. Let him get used to the other dogs from the safety of your arms after you have determined they are not a threat. We don't go to the private clubs here because there are always big dogs off leash there. (Walking on streets or in parks in Cairo is not possible at all) It would only take one bite and it's hard to tell if it's aggression or just interest until they are quite close. It's just not worth the risk. The one time we went to a club, a HUGE 6-month-old Husky puppy decided Samantha was the cutest thing he had ever seen. She was 4 years old at the time. We were ok until he decided he would do something about it - and Miss S is spayed! Needless to say, I picked her up immediately. He was a very sweet dog but I was a little nervous when he stood up on his hind legs and was as tall as I. His owner came running, apologizing, and all was well. What was Samantha doing all this time? Speculatively giving him the once over! When he left later, she watched him until he was out of sight. You can also call out, "my dog's not friendly", that should prompt some people to call their dogs back to them. |
Pick him up. It's not worth the risk to do otherwise. |
Yeah, I agree, you should pick him up, one traumatic event could scare him, worse than you picking him up, and he should be somewhat fearful, of a dog running to him that he doesn't know. It's happened to me a few times, and I've learned to pick him up, and if the owner and the dog really assure me, that it's a gentle dog, I will set Joey down, but more often I keep holding Joey. We have so many dogs off leash, and the park says all dogs must be on leash at all times (it's not a dog park). |
I'm all for morgan playing with all sized dogs but i'll always pick morgan up when a dog i don't know approaches. I don't limit it to just big dogs because in the past morgan has been jumped by a small dogs (westie, jack russle size) who are bigger then her as well. I hold morgan and let them sniff each other. If i deem the other dog is acceptable then i'll put morgan down. At the beach i always have morgan on a retractable leash as well because she'll run off and go home with someone else :rolleyes:. she loves people way too much sometimes. |
dogs shouldnt be left unleashed in public its just not safe! |
I would definitely pick him up. I met up with a woman yesterday who had her mini-dachshund attacked my 3 neighborhood dogs. Her dog had his trachea ripped out, had to have surgery and was on a ventilator with a pretty bad prognosis. It's not worth the risk to me at this point. |
I always pick up Piper when a large unleashed dog approaches. I don't always know what to do when that dog starts jumping for my baby. I've said NO!, have kicked out at them. Sometimes they keep jumping until their owner finally comes and gets their dog under control. By this time Piper is trying to climb on my head. |
I would definitely pick up my dog. Heck, I'll pick up my dog if a person comes running at her. I am in BC Canada, and here dogs on leashes is the law. Still there are rude people who feel it doesn't apply to them. Dogs are leashed for a reason and for the safety and comfort of all. People who let their dogs run loose when not in an enclosed off leash dog park, are just inconsiderate and poor mannered, plain and simple. Mary:animal-pa |

I would pick mine up. I won't walk all 3 of mine alone because of this. There is no way I could get them all up safely if an unfriendly dog approached. |
