I was in the backyard with Tinky, my mother, and a friend. She absolutely LOVES the grass, so she was pouncing and hopping around, just like a bunny. We were keeping a close eye on her, but then she went towards a corner of my lawn, probably around 4 feet away from us. I thought it was safe, but you know what happened?

A big HAWK swooped over, zooming for Tinky thinking she was a little bunny. My mom screamed, which made the hawk startled, and he glided right over our heads, 3 feet away. I snatched Tinky up and ran inside.

Guys, I'm warning you, please watch your babies when you let them out.
Whether you live in the California area or not, just watch them incase,

I almost had a heart attack today. :thumbdown
I cannot let go of Tinky. :(

Oh goodness! Thank god your baby is ok! I remember reading a thread about this about 2 months ago. Similar stories. You can never be too careful! I know I would have had a heart attack. We have really big crows around here that are bigger than Marley and even those scare me bc they aren't scared of ANYTHING! And their beaks are HUGE! They could tear her to pieces. Again, I am glad your baby is ok!!

OMGosh! I'm so glad that Tinky is still with you! How terribly scary! Those hawks can be so sneaky too...just come out of nowhere...like what happened with you today. Thank goodness your mom screamed to startle that hawk! That was too close for comfort!

OMG! How scarry is that I am so glad you were there to save her. I have heard stories about just that kind of thing happening. We live on a lake and never let Lexi out of our sight either we have seen owls and hawks and eagles and osprey swooping all around us and it is so darn scarry. I am happy your little furbaby is safe in your arms

There was a rather large hawk in the next door neighbor's huge palm tree this past sunday. It hung around for about a half hour. I managed to snap a few photos of it. Finally two squirrels scared it off. Don't know if it had any intentions of going after Zena, but the thought crossed my mind. She is 7.5 pounds and a bit large for hawk prey hopefully.

I live in Michigan and that is a huge fear! I am so glad to hear that you were able to get to Tinky in time! What a scary experience for you, good thing you were able to startle that hawk, oh my goodness!

I've seen on TV and heard of hawks snatching up baby deer so 7.5 lb is not too big! Please, always keep a watchful eye out, and if it were me, if i knew hawks were in the area I would keep my dog on a leash.

The same extact thing happened to me like a month ago..Good thing for hubby's mom bc she screamed as well!!!!! Yes we have to watch our babies like HAWKS

This is a constant fear of mine. Every time I let my boys out on the deck, I have to search the sky first to check for hawks. There are so many around here it gives me nightmares! I can't take my eyes off my yorkies for a second.

Thank goodness you were able to avert tragedy today. This is a wake-up call for all of us.

Close call! wow I am so happy your baby is safe and you were able to get her! I have read an article in our paper about this happening to a yorkie, luckily the guy was able to get his dog. This is a huge fear and it is a shame we have to worry about this because I know these baby yorkies just love to pounch around the grass!!

SO glad your mother screamed and scared the hawk away! Birds of prey can and will snatch up a meal , fast! How frightning that must of been . I am very glad this was a happy ending , and a warning to us all to be very careful. I have huge owls out where I live, that scare me . We can never be too careful when it comes to our little ones. :aimeeyork

So glad you Mum screamed it could have been such a nightmare day for you otherwise, just the thought of it makes me tremble. Extra kisses for your baby and hugs for you too

I am so glad your baby is alright....I am in California also and have never given a thought about predators till I got my yorkie...She doesn't go out without me being right there with her....

I never noticed how big hawks were until the one today actually came swooping down.:(

We have a big red tail hawk in our Redwood tree and an Owl in one other one. I won't let either of my babies out by themselves. Buttons is 7.5 lbs and Oliver is 2.7. A snack and then dinner if they got mine. Scary

WOAH, glad you're being careful!! I've heard so many horrifying stories about families losing their pets [parrots, small dogs, cats] to outside creatures.
There's a lot of coyotes here too:(

Thanks! for the heads up ! I told my Vet We heard and saw huge Owls on the roof, by the chimney of the fireplace and she said she had 2 customer lose their pet to owls and Hawks , 7 1/2 is no big deal to them .
The babies found a poor rabbit in the yard last week that was attacted by some big animal, so at night I go out with a flashlight and my boom Lol:eek:
No I'm not going flying Lol ! , but at least I can try and scare them away and run in the house.

So happy your baby is okay !

My best friend lost an eight pound rabbit to some kind of aminal one night late last year. We have no idea what aminal did the dirty deed. I always keep a careful eye out for my Zena around the yard and during neighborhood walks; even more so after reading all the replies to the original post.

I live in NE TN and I have heard that too... that hawks come after small animals such as yorkies.. I was at the groomer's the other day and a man said he had just lost his cat to a hawk, and almost lost his baby schnauzer (sp?). Ollie looks kinda like a bunny-squirrel and he hops around like it too... so those of you in this area, beware too!

Tinky's around 2.5-3 pounds and is still a pup so I guess she looked yummy -.- and again, thanks again to all of you :) just wanted to let you guys know to keep your babies safe. I don't think there's particularly owls in the area, but they sound scary too.

Dear heavens, oh so glad nothing happens, we are going to be moving to a bigger place+yard, I told hubby I'm so freaking out about let the girls in the back yard, here is little and I'm right there with them boy on that house how do I'm going to watch them, hubby look at me like here she goes again:rolleyes: I'm going to bookmark this and show him:eek:
