Baby Playpens Does anyone use this for their yorkie? In another month it will be cool enough to cook.:D So I would like to move Buddy out of the kitchen. But I also need to contain him some how. It has to be a soft sided, so he doesn't hit his head on anything hard. I was thinking of a playpen but was wondering, could his little nails get caught in the mesh? Any other suggestions would be great. |
My Gracie Bell is in a playpen (pac-n-play) when we need to contain her. It has her kennel, food, water, and potty pad. She sleeps in there too. It is beside my bed. Her nails don't get caught and she doesn't try and chew through. Lately she has decided to jump on top of her kennel though to reach the top edge. :) She is a little dare devil!!! Actually we have 2 play pens one for home and one for my studio. |
I have this pen for Lady to keep her safe from my grandchildren when they visit. ;) Pink Plaid Pet Tent Exercise Pen Playpen Dog Cat Crate - eBay (item 250355343863 end time Aug-08-09 15:25:45 PDT) |
I love that pet tent! And its pink! :) I think we need it! |
I ordered the same tent as Lady Mom after it was posted on here. I ordered the teal color which is really a muted green. He loves it! It's like his little hideaway. It folds up and comes with a carrying case that's similar to a beach chair. I ordered it from this place and they offered free shipping and it came very quickly. We got the large one so he would have plenty of space to roam around. Pet Play Pen They were a pleasure to do business with. Good luck! :animal36 |
Thanks Ladies! I wouldn't have to worry about Buddy eating through it. He's 16 now. What is on the floor of the pac n play? Can I lay a shower curtain then pee pads? Is there enough room for him to walk? (with small bed?) I was looking at this Walmart.com: North State - Superyard XT Portable Playard and Gate: Gear If it is a rectangle, I have limited space. I could take and pad the sides for him. Any other ideas? |
I bought a pac-n-play type baby playpen for my little guy and liked it so much I bought one for my father to use with his yorkie. I did NOT buy new! go on craigslist, you can usually get them for less than half price. I think I paid like $25 for mine, and it was worth 3 times that! its so perfect, and when my dad's dog is here, they both stay in it (if we are having a lot of company and we are afraid of them getting out of the house into the pool or something) I heartily reccomend these! |

Do you think it is big enough for 2 puppies. I have a 14 week old and a 13 week old boy & girl. :) |
Oh. I forgot to write that the tent "puppy play pen" has a vinyl floor and would be easy to clean in case of an accident. It has mesh all around and on opposite sides the mesh rolls up to make a "door". Last cool thing is you can zip up the mesh top so that if he was outside, bugs wouldn't be able to bite him. :) |
Yes. Two puppies could absolutely fit beautifully in the large tent. I am uncertain about the other size. We have a large bed in there and if when we need to keep him in there, his litter pan fits and water and he still has room to walk. |
I have the smaller size tent and all three of my yorkies can fit in there nicely when I use it to keep them confined. I only put them in it with a couple of toys and blankets and they love it. |
Nico, How big is the large? I couldn't find any specs on it. Probably not looking in the right place for it:D |
I bought something similar, but haven't had a chance to use it yet. When I got it, I tried setting it up and it's not as easy as they advertised. If your looking for something you want to set up once and leave it, or bring it out and put it a way a few times then I think it would work. But if your looking for something that you can travel with and easily break down, I would look for something else. Quote:

I use a pac-n-play for my 17 yr old yorkie to sleep in at night and she does fine with it. I also use the plastic octagon shape one like the one walmart has for my 15 month old when I am gone but I have to put down a waterproof pad and then her pee pads on top of that just in case. I really like the idea of the tent with the vinyl bottom and may have to invest in one of those. |
I have to say that before we used to take the expens with us (and sometimes we still do to section off areas of the room) but carrying it is hard becuase it is HEAVY. I really like how light weight the tent "puppy playpen" is. |
I saw this play pen at the Houston Dog show it looked light so I wondered how does it stay in place? if the dog stands on her back legs with front paws on the mesh will the play pen move? or slide? |
The three of mine horse around in their tent and no one has tipped over yet. I really like the item - it's light, easy to set up/break down and is very cute. |
Would there be a way to secure the water and food bowls? Buddy is old, eye sight problems, along with the cancer and stroke problems. (His back leg is still slides sometimes). I really want to find the safest thing for him! And let him find his water and food. |
I think you would just have to leave the water/food bowls in the tent on the ground and I'm not sure how you would secure them. Maybe you could get heavy bowls like ceramic or something that would stay put?? I'm not sure though. I can try to send you a video clip of the tent with the dogs in it tomorrow if that might help you see it better to help decide what item to purchase. |
Thank you 107, and everybody else!!! It's starting to get harder now, I know Buddy won't be with me that much longer. I just want him safe and comfortable, out of harms way. |
Awww....I asked my husband if he thought the tent would be good for your dog and he agrees with me. We have it on top of carpet.....I imagine that if you have hard flooring that it could be a little slippery but maybe put a few towels underneath it? If you put a bed in there, with a heavy water bowl, I think your baby should be ok. I do not think that it could be topped over even if you had a couple of yorkies leaning on the mesh. It's a very stable tent. The mesh is high quality. |
I used a pac-n-play when Shayna was a baby to keep her corraled, however she hated it along with her crate. She would toss her food, yell and scream and scratch at the mesh (no damage though to either). When we are away at family I will bring it to keep her contained. The only way to keep her quiet was to put her sister a Mini Bull in there with her. After a while we felt that wasn't fair to Ginger so we gave them up. At 8mo she has have free roam, but I still watch her for booboos in the bathroom or hallway (they can be very sneaky). |

Hope you don't think me rude for saying but it looks kind of small for 3 yorkies though..suppose its ok if they are not left alone in it for long periods;)...and the adult can't get away from the lively puppy when she needs a break! They are great for holidays though...and would be brilliant for the elderly yorkie. |
107 Barney- I think that was so lovely what you did to help the OP decide! You really are thoughtful. Your little guys are super duper cute! I have the large tent....I love it. It just offers a little more space to walk around. I can see that your little loves enjoy being in there as much as my little man. Again, I'm sure the OP will agree, you made a wonderful and informative video.:D |
Metal or Soft Sided? Would you all suggest a soft sided playpen or a metal one? I wouldnt want my two to scratch there way out. |
I can't imagine being able to scratch their way out but that's just my opinion with my puppy. Maybe others disagree but you need to choose what you feel most comfortable with. |
