I just got a 7 week old Yorki :) I have been wanting a yorki ever since my Gf's Mom got one. I had a friend who accidentally breaded there dogs and she gave me a baby male yorki. He is AKC breed i believe that's what she said. So far i have had him a week, and he seems to be doing great other than his extreme chewing habbits. He has been potting on the pads when im home, but if i leave him out and come back its on the floor. Why's that? Also I noticed that my yorki is not into cuddling? I thought all yorkies loved there owners? He prefers to go find a hiding place and sleep, rather than sleep with me. He goes into the courner of my leather couch and sticks his head down into the cusion. Its cute, but i feel like he's not going be cuddly dog later. Is this just a puppy stage? Will they grow out of it? If not, how would you recommend fixing this? I bet he just misses, mom and his brothers and sisters. We named him Scooby. |

He is very young too young to be away from his mother. He is also getting used to a new environment. Give him time and Im sure he will become more cuddly. I think they are more cuddly as adults also. You have to keep him confined when you arent watching him or he'll have accidents. Potty training takes time and yorkiies are notorious for being hard to potty train. |

Welcome and Congratulations! Just be patinet. 7 weeks is a little young to be taken from his mother. Usually around 12 weeks is better. He will bond with you. Just give him a little more time!:animal36 |

We got Allie at 6 weeks, which by the experts is WAY to young to seperate MamaYorkie and BabyYorkie. Oh well. What's done is done. Congrats on your new addition! If your little boy is anything like our little girl then watch out! The first few days she didn't want to cuddle. She didn't really know what to think or do. It took her about two or three weeks to grow out of that. She chewed on EVERYTHING, so make sure to get a ton of nice things for her to chew on (except rawhide... blah!) Your boy will grow to be much more cuddly. Allie follows me all over the house now and won't sleep at night unless she is cuddled with someone. Congrats again! You've found a great plethora of information here on YorkieTalk! |

The people i got him from were an elderly couple, and they are up at 5-6am, so i have a feeling he's used to there schedual. I'll post pictures this weekend. I forgot to ask, He is a little overweight i think lol. They fed him little champions food pouches and gave me some. I've been feeding it to him everyday. He also get pedigree puppy show solid food. Is the little champions wet food good for him? I'm worried that its making him chubby lol. He has a big belly. He's still very cute and i give him all day access to food and water. |

Congratulations on your new tiny baby. Please make sure that you have either Nutra-Cal or Karo syrup on hand in case he goes into a hypoglycemic episode. These are symptoms: "Most common clinical signs of hypoglycemia are drowsiness, shivering, collapsing, disorientation, seizures, listlessness, depression, muscle weakness and tremors." (Hypoglycemia Symptoms and Treatment) Also, be sure to clean up any poo or pee accidents with an enzyme cleaner such as Nature's Miracle. If you don't he'll always go back to those spots. I'm sure you are having lots of fun.:D ~Joanne~ |

Welcome to YT. There are a lot of better foods to feed him, but when you switch do it slowly. Some of the better foods are Canade, Wellness, Innova and if you do a search you will find a lot of good info on foods. He sounds like a smart little guy. Another option besides the crate is to get an expen and fence his crate in there with a place for the pee pad that way he has more room. Can't wait to see pictures. |

Congrats! I can't wait to see some pictures of your little guy :) |

Congrats on the puppy and welcome to YT. I agree that he could be on a better puppy food. I prefer Wellness, but other good brands include innova and solid gold. The wellness and solid gold you will be able to find at petco and the innova you need to go to a smaller pet store for. As for the big belly it could be the food but it could also be worms. Have you taken him to the vet yet? If you haven't i'd bring a poop sample with you. He's due for his first distemper vaccine about now too. 8 weeks is the youngest they can get their first distemper combo vaccine. |

Good post, I also want to urge you to know the symptoms of hypoglycemia, as others have stated, most yorkies are still with the mom at this age. They are prone to hypoglycemia the first 6 months of age because they have no fat storage. Have you thought about free feeding? This means having food in the bowl at all times, and allowing the puppy to eat whenever he's hungry. Best of luck, and we love to see puppy pictures! |

Congrats on your new furbaby...yorkies are so loveable and you have found an incredible forum. Everyone is so helpful and caring should you have any questions or concerns...welcome again can't wait to see pictures Hugs Cheryl & Lexi:aimeeyork |

Hi there, and welcome to YT ! I can't wait to see pictures of your new baby :) It is a good idea to free feed your new baby a higher quality puppy food. A kibble diet is best, and good for their little puppy teeth, and emerging teeth . What has already been said, take him to a good vet too. His swollen belly could be an indication of worms, which is very common in young puppies. It's simply treated by deworming, + a vaccine schedule is good to get him started on right now. Keep training him on the puppy pads , is perfect , because he is too young to be outside, and exposed to other animals. Congradulations on your new puppy . |

they are v-k9 DH2PP 3-4 weeks Pyrantel pamoate disp. SA I doubt its worms, he doesnt seem to have any issue popping or scratching him self. How would you know if he had that anyways? Quote:
Does anyone know what kinds of fruits he can eat? I would like to get him on a good diet. Also when is a good time to start taking him outside to use the restroom? What about flee's? What can i do to prevent them? |

Being that you got him at such a young age, really he should be just being weaned on to food. He's chewing alot because he's teething. Go easy on the potty training, he's just a baby....don't expect too much from him. |

As far as taking him outside, i'd wait until he gets his next distemper vaccine and then only take him outside in your backyard to potty if you are trying to train him to go outside. Do not take him for walks yet or bring him around other dogs (unless they are friends or family dogs who you know are up to date on all vaccines). You puppy is very young and suseptible to diseases. Also since he's so young i wouldn't put flea medication on him yet. wait a few more weeks. Since he's not going outside he shouldn't get fleas but if you notice them you can bath him. A lot of people here use Minksheen shampoo ( i used to too) and it does work to keep fleas off them. its not a chemical flea shampoo but has natural bug repellents in it. |

But, your right this puppy had his vaccinations way to young and the puppy shouldn't be around other dogs or taken out in public. Speak to your vet about flea medication. I found a couple of fleas on one of pups when they were about 7 weeks of age. The vet said it was fine to administer 1/2 a tube of Frontline. But, to monitor for any adverse reaction. I only left it on 24 hours and then bathed them. Another thing to bathe him in (it kills fleas instandly) is Original Dawn Dish Soap. |

Is 6 1/2 weeks still to early? Thanks for the other tips. I had my GF's yorki over last week and he had some flee's that really why i was concerned with that. His belly doesnt look like its that big. It just looks like he eats a little more than usual. I think he's just fat lol. All her dogs were over weight some. Her adult yorki had a belly and so did all the puppys. She had a bugal that looked like a pot belly pig lol. she free feeds them, I bet the animals fight over food thinking that once its gone its gone. What about fruit? Can i feed him any, if so what kind? And if its to early to feed it to him now, let me know. |

Dawn is great at killing fleas. I used this a lot when i worked in animal shelters. |

I don't feed fruits but others here do and can probably give you examples of what they feed. I do give carrots and green beans every so often tho. great healthy snacks. |

Don't be adding to much to his diet. Feed him a good puppy food. You'll have to start his vaccinations all over again. By giving him his vaccine at the age he got it, all it did was supress the immunities that he got from his mother. So, be very careful. Keep him away from public places. Shots should be given at 8, 12 and 16 weeks. With the rabies at about 6 or 7 months. Have your vet do a fecal exam. Don't worry about his being fat right now....he needs all the nutrition he can get right now. He's a baby. Be careful not to let him over play or be over handled. |

Please remember, his tummy is very small and tender, pls do not feed him anything but puppy food at this age. Yes way to young to be away from his mommy and others in the litter, he needs to have playmates at that age. 6 weeks to 7 is fine for bigger dogs, not yorkies. Congrats on getting him, and just read all you can about them please. I am happy to hear you are seaking out information, that is a sign of good home. May he be with you for a long long time. |
