Digging-but only before laying down! I call it "making her bed" Mya always digs right before she lays down somewhere, and never any other time! It is the cutest thing...she'll do it on a bed, couch, her bed, blanket anything! It is the funniest thing it really is like she's making her bed. She doesn't dig any other time! People go omg that's so cute! cuz she will really get goin fast haha, and I'm like oh yeah, she's just making her bed :) I know they were bred to hunt rodents...but I didn't know if they like slept in holes too??? Causing her to have the digging instinct before she lays down?? Maybe to hide from the rats :) Anyone know??? |
I don't really know either. I equate it with plumping a pillow. lol Fun to watch though. |
Max has been doing that too, but only these last few months, never did this before, he only does it at night, on our bed. |
It's so funny. Just as I was reading this, Yogi started "making his bed". He is now laying beside me!:D |

Mine also like to "make their beds" But my Shihtzus do it too... i wonder if the Shih's learned it from the yorkies who were here first !!!! |

Both of our yorkies do this as well :) It isn't just Yorkies though, it is a dog thing- most of my dogs growing up did it as well. Maybe in the wild they did it to make sure nothing was going to be in their way when they laid down, kind of like circling before laying. |

Kimbo does this for every nap and also @ bedtime. One of his favorite places to fall asleep is on my kid's backs when they're laying on the floor. Whenever they notice that he looks sleepy, they race each other to lay down so Kimbo will give them a "massage" before his nap. We video taped it the other day. He's the best massuese ever! Adorable to watch! |
Someone once told me that this is called nesting. All of my yorkies have done that also. :) |
Denzel does this also i just thought he liked the way the sheets felt on his fur in between his toes hahaha. my boyfriend always ask me why does he do it and i say because he likes the smooth texture so when Denzel fall asleep tonight in our bed and if my boyfriend asks the same question as he do every night i will say because he is "making the bed up" lol |
My Yorkies do it too. We never questioned why though. I just figured they wanted a heap of blanket to make it puffy so when they lay down it is nice and soft. They just do it with blankets not pillows since they are flat. :aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
Apple's breeder and I were talking about this trait, and this just seems to be how yorkie's do business.... Apple actually tries to dig a nest in my lap!!! Fortunately, it's just a couple of digs, a spin and then down, or I could end up w/some injured thighs lol....She spends more time diggin' on pillows and blankets, 'though.... |

Lexi does that too. She will run so fast sometimes it takes her breathe away. It is the funniest thing to watch she will fluff and fluff then go in circles get up...fluff and fluff and go in circles. Sometimes she will bark at you if she heres you laughing:D Hugs Cheryl & Lexi |
Almost all dogs do this. It is thought that they go in circles to pat down the grass when they lived in the wild and then they will dig it to mound it up.:) |
Stormy used to do this, she would dig around, spin and lay down. If it wasn't comfy enough she would do it again and again til it was JUST right, I would always have a good giggle! I'll miss it thas for sure :( |
Suzi likes to dig before finding a good place to rest :) she dig so hard in the same spot too, i'll watch her with raised eye brows thinking, ok, what are you trying to accomplish? ;) silly Suzi , often times her favorite place to sleep is right at the bottom of my feet. thats my girl, she is nevertoo far away from me. :thumbup: |
I had no idea so many Yorkies are doing this. Calleigh does this mainly at bedtime. It's something she started when she was about a year old. She's now two. It's funny to watch all right. |
I watched a show on animal planet about this. They said dogs do this out of instinct. If they were in the wild, it's to #1 make sure nothing is underneath them (bugs, snake etc) and #2 they make "the nest" bigger so as to fool other predators into thinking they are bigger than they are, to discourage an attack while sleeping. Smart little guys, huh? |

It is the funnyist thing to watch my Oscar has done it ever since we brought him home not so much now he is 7 months old it has tapered off now it is only sometimes. I have not see my Keysha do it once yet she is 3 months. I did some reading on puppies before we got them and it seems that it is inbread in them from when they were wolfs in the wild it is nesting, very interesting. :animal36 |

Samantha has always done this. It amazes me how much is hard wired with dogs. When she was a puppy she tried to eat the flowers in the rug. When that didn't work, she tried to dig them up. Sometimes she stalks me, which always cracks me up. |
