Any advice PLEASE... I took Lexi to the vet tonight and I am so torn. Here is the story My big ? is should I have my vet redo the spay or should I take her somewhere else? I do like my vet, but I don't want to be nieve. Money is NOT an issue. Part of me thinks my vet already knows what is going on so stick with her. The other part of me thinks they had their chance so screw'em and go somewhere else. What would you do? |
SECOND OPINION please. You can always go back to your doctor but a second opinion is always a good choice.. |
That is a really tough decision...will the vet that you had spay her the first time do ALL of the necessary things that need to be done at NO charge..Even if this was part of the deal I would still be worried a bit it they have already messed up once...I am sorry, not much help here. :( |
 OMG!! That's horrible!! That is such a tough call. Part of me says to not go back they should know what they are doing as a spay is sooo routine(they should not have messed up). The other part says to take her back cuz they know the problem - but what's to say they won't find the ovary again and dig around again causing MORE PAIN. I'm sooo sorry I wish I could offer some advice.... that's such a hard decision :( |
I'm so sorry that you and Lexi are having to go through this! What nightmare! I hope that everything works out and that Lexi has a speedy recovery from her second  spay. How awful! I'm so sorry! Thor sends hugs and kisses. Hannah |
Tricia Im so sorry you are going through this,I would just very quickly go talk to another vet and give them all the history, see what they have to say and then go with your gut instinct I will really be thinking of you I know you will be worried sick.(dianne and prudence) |
I'm so sorry she has to go thru that again and you, too. Whispersmom has good advice. I've never heard of such a thing in all of my life! :( |
They are going to do everything at no charge. I know she is in heat, I was just hoping not. First off her nipples started getting bigger over the weekend(not huge just bigger). Then this morning we went to petco and this little black dog kept howling everytime he saw Lexi, I didn't think anything of it, I just joked around and said "well Sexy Lexi at least he's cute" then when Prissy012899 asked if she was in heat I started thinking more and more about it. Then when we arrived at the vets office and she looked at her she said OMGosh, I think she maybe in heat. There are several vets in this office and when Lexi's surgery was done 2 of them actually came in and helped look for her ovary and her second kidney. (supposedly she only has one kidney also, and this they even did an ultra sound to try to find it.)That is why I don't believe she was just careless. Also the night of Lexi's surgery I called them and talk to a different vet and as soon as I said Lexi's name they all knew who I was talking about. |
Thank you all, for your support. I am so upset. I've been crying all evening and poor Lexi knows something is wrong. You have no ideal how much this means to me right now. I am going to talk to another vet in the morning and not just one. I'm also going to call the overnight offices and get their opions. |
I am so sorry you are having to go through this!!! The stress of one spay surgery is enough to make anyone crazy but TWO!!!! I would say to stick with the same vet...they sound like they were thorough (sp??) the first time...but how do you miss an ovary??? That is the weird thing to me....You might talk to another vet about the situation and see what they think....Good Luck....Gracie sends Lexi LOTS of hugs and kisses!!!! |
I would be really upset too - and I think you are doing exactly the right thing by getting some more opinions. I'm so sorry, I know I would be sooo upset too. Good luck and let us know what happens. |
Poor Lexi, To have to do this again???? :( I had to have a hys... and I can tell you I would never want to do it again... Is there a rush or can you let her recoupe a little before going through it all over again??? |
It has been over 3 months since she was spayed, they want to do it right away while the ovary is enlarged. I did just talk to a 24 vet and he said that it is something that happens, not real offen but does happen. He said that because my vet had another vet come in and look he believes her ovary is very tiny and nearly impossiable to find. A yorkie ovary (from wht they told me) is smaller round, and yet a tiny bit longer than a pea, while in heat and for a short time after the ovary is a tiny bit larger than a nickel. |
Well I guess it goes without saying "We are all human" even vets. |
I know it's awful. I've been through spaying my best friends a number of times, so I know how it feels. I also know how I'd feel if I was in your shoes. But I keep thinking that it has to be done and I don't see any other option, because cancer later in life is a real risk plus the discomfort of going through heat every time. I know I'd have it done. I just can't help but wonder if they couldn't find it last time, why do they think they can find it this time? I don't believe she has only one kidney, either. |
A yorkie ovary (from wht they told me) is smaller round, and yet a tiny bit longer than a pea, while in heat and for a short time after the ovary is a tiny bit larger than a nickel. OK. That explains why they couldn't find it! Wishing you the best! |
Oh my.....I feel so badly for you. I would be upset and angry too. That is so awful that it happended to poor sweet Lexy!! I have decided against spaying my girls at all on the advice of my new vet. Both my girls are under three pounds and he just feels that they should keep "all their parts" unless there was a valid reason for spaying like you couldn't keep them from getting pregnant or whatever. The risks of disease later in life are not enough to put them under the risks of general anesthesia in his opinion and it is not as common as the vets would like to make you think. Princess Chai has been through one heat and it wasn't bad at all, no mess as she kept herself clean and she was a little quiet for a day or two or nothing major. This is a personal decision but I wouldn't put her through another surgery and I would ask for my money back on the first one.JMHO. |
I have to say right now my gut says find a new vet. I guess my other concern is getting this done right away. If it is enlarged right now then I need to have this done really soon. I do know I don't want her to go into another heat. So I'm going to make some calls tomorrow and see if I can't get my first Yorkies vet to do it. (the reason I didn't go to my old vet in the first place is because of location, and this vet was suppose to be just as good) |
Second opinion I think that your right to follow your gut instinct. I went through a similar thing with my Mother. Her surgeon botched her first surgery and something told me not to let them go back in, but I figured he was a doctor and knew best. I lost my Mom during that second operation. The thing with vets and Dr's is that they are human and don't know everything. Get a second opinion and put your mind at ease. I hope that your baby is better soon!! |

Tricia... im so sorry to hear whats going on with Lexi.... what have you decided to do? i agree with the second opinion and what neglegence (sp) for not finding this out sooner.. Lexi will be in my prayers :( *HUGS* |
I'm so sorry you have to go through all this. I'd have to say I'd take her to another vet, or the first vet would really have to convince me of what happened the first time, and that she would be ok if she had it done again. I'll pray for you and your little Lexi. |
Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers, I just wanted to update and I probably won't know much more before Monday. I have been on the phone and to a couple of vet offices today. I was told over and over that this isn't that uncommon (then how come most of us here have never heard of it happening). I was informed that the office I take her to is probably the best for small dogs in my area or remotely close. The vet my first yorkie went to has retired :( . 2 vets told me they wouldn't even consider touching her unless they were the one who missed the ovary and even then they would try to have another vet from their office do it. I did find another vet (in the same office I already go to) that wants to do it and he is also interested to see if she has only 1 kidney or if that was a mistake too. He was so sweet and caring, (made me feel much better) and wonderful with Lexi. He is willing to do the surgery at no cost. When/if he does the surgery he wants me to meet him there to talk in person. I also talked to a "specialist" he says the same thing as this vet, that while she is in heat the ovary is 3-4 times larger than it's normal size and should not be big problem to find "if her insides are normal". If she really is missing a kidney there maybe other things not right which could be the reason they couldn't find ovary in the beginning. So for now I just have to wait on these blood test and then decide what to do from there. No matter what the surgery will not be next Tue., however if she is in heat it will probably be done sometime late next week. |

Lotsa hugs to you and Lexi during this stressful time for both of you. You are in my thoughts. |
The vet that wants to speak to you in person sounds very caring. Whatever decision you make, I know it will be in Lexi's best interest. Take care. :) |
I hope everything goes well for lexi! |
My thoughts and prayer is with you and your poor Baby...now i am afraid...as i have to make an appointment for Rosi to get spayed....:( |
Thank you all so much for your support and warm thoughts. I did meet the vet that wants to do her surgery already, I ment to say that he wants me up there the day he does it. Like if it is sceduled for 9:30 am he wants me there by 10 or 10:30 that way when it\'s over I don\'t have to wait for the call and we can talk in person. I\'m also going to valenteer to help out with other dogs that are having surgery that day. Just little stuff like sitting with them, talking to them, petting them, and taking them out to potty. Anyway, I\'m so sorry for the misunderstanding... |
So Sorry I will be praying for little Lexi and you too, think positive and she will pull through this ordeal. Good luck and keep posting, glad you found a caring vet, makes all the difference in having faith in them. Rowdy and his Mama |
wow whaqt a desission. I will be praying. |
