♥ Run in with the Recliner...♥ We had what could have been a serious accident at our house two nights ago. I'm still pretty upset when I think about what happened :( I'm always bragging about how wonderful my kids are with Missy, and how they are so careful with her and watch out for her...yeah well....my 4 and 5 yr old were rocking in the Lazyboy recliner too hard, and the front of it lifted off the ground, and at that split second Missy spotted a fruit snack that one of the kids had dropped under the chair, and she went for it. The front wooden bar of the recliner frame came down right on her neck squishing her under the weight of the recliner. She is only 3.5 lbs and the heavy chair had 2 X 40 lb kids sitting on it. The kids rocked the chair back (I think realizing that it had got Missy), and it came back down on her neck briefly for a second time before my husband yanked the chair back and I grabbed her out. It's a good thing we were both right there. She was SQUEALING so loud, we were all screaming and crying. My husband blurted out, "that's it, omg, she's dead for sure!". I just held her tight to my chest and ran straight to my car to get her into the vet. I got to my vet's office 2 mins after she left to go home for the night, so I called her on her cell phone. By this time, Missy seemed OK. Shaken up, but OK. I couldn't believe that she was still breathing and nothing appeared broken. My vet asked me several questions over the phone and had me check a bunch of things with Missy. She decided that it would be OK to just monitor Missy for the evening and bring her in for a vet check the following morning. She said if things went downhill over night, to take her to the Emergency vet, but Missy seemed OK. So I brought her home, and she settled in for a long nap. She seemed scared and shooken up, but otherwise OK. No broken bones or pains anywhere. Well after her nap, she woke up at 11pm and she was full of the dickens! She was right back to her regular ol' self. I am SO relieved. Honestly, I think it was some kind of miracle that got her through this. My 6 yr old son said he started praying the moment it happened, and he didn't stop until he went to bed. I know it sounds corny, and I'm not all that religious, but I really think that it had something to do with her being all right. There is alot of power in positive thinking. I'm just so glad that she is OK, and the recliner is HISTORY. I never even thought about how dangerous it could be. |
Oh my goodness!! Poor missy :( It is amazing that she was fine! I cannot imagine how you were feeling... |
Wow what a story. I think you are right about your 6 year old sons prayer. It is amazing she was not hurt. What a good boy! What a great job you have done with him. Thank you for posting this, it is a good reminder for all of us to be careful. i am so glad your baby is okay. Yorkie Angels watching over them!!:lovewings |
Oh boy! What a miracle it is that Missy is ok! You and your family must have been so scared. I would get rid of that recliner too if it were me. Thank you for sharing this story so others will know of the possible danger of having a recliner. I'm not saying everyone who owns one should get rid of em. I know you must be very thankful your little baby is ok! |
I am so glad your baby is ok. When I got Emmie the breeder wanted to talk to my daughter, who is 10, before we were allowed to take her home. We already had Sydney but I thought this was good for the safety of the puppy. Closing doors, recliners and putting her up on high places were some of the things that her went over. |
Thank god everything came out ok!!! Just shows how anything can happen at any time. So happy that Missy did not get hurt. :animal36:) |
Wow! Close one. Thank god you little girl is ok. I also believed in positive thinking... It for sure help. And good thing you trow that f***ing chair in the Gargage!!! What a story! Happy it has a good ending. |
oh my gosh  oh my gosh i am glad everything is ok with missy :) we also have recliners and are constantly checking poppy has not run underneath or she would become trapped and badly injured  it just shows how quickly accidents can happen it is like having toddlers again , :p love jill n poppy xx:aimeeyork |
OMG! I am so glad the Missy is okay. The are quick little boogers! Your sons must have been beside themselves. I am glad that all turned out well. Hugs to all of you! :) |
I am so glad she is ok!!! It is amazing the things we don't think about! Thanks for posting this so maybe it will keep this from happening to someone else's baby. |
OMG'sh, I'm sooooooo glad everything turned out o.k....and like Roscoe'smom, I'm glad you posted this to give others a head's up...I have read about this particular danger to our babies, and I think warnings about this sort of thing need to be brought to the forefront more often, although it gives me the shivers, evertime I read about it:eek: |
I am so happy Missy is ok. Those recliners can be dangerous. Thank Goodnesss for a happy ending:):animal-pa |
What a miracle that she's okay. I am sure your son's prayers had a lot to do with it. Children have great faith. Glad she's alright. |
I'm relieved she is fine! My husband would have acted exactly like yours - he is addicted to my little ones. |
Im so glad to hear that he is ok. Kudos to your son for the prayers. I am a believer in prayer. That was a smart move to put the recliner in the garage. My children don't sit in our recliner when Roxy is out for that very reason. |
Whew!!!!! So glad Miss made it OK! |
OMG how scary. I am so glad she is ok. Miracles so happen. |
I am so glad that Missy is okay! Thank goodness! My friend's in-laws lost a pom puppy that way. They were devastated. The husband stood up and closed the recliner, and the puppy was right underneath where the foot part folds up. :( |
We did not have a happy ending. I am so glad to hear that your baby is OK. We had a very different ending with a kitten of ours before we got our yorkie, Riley. Our cat had a litter of kittens and we had decided to keep the little runt. His name was Tucker. We couldn't find him one evening and he had gotten under one of the recliners and died. We were devastated. When we got our yorkie back in December, my husband disabled every single recliner in the house. (We have theater seating so there are 5). We are getting a new kitten tomorrow and they are staying that way. He was so precious! I hope that people realize the danger. |
Thank God I'm so glad she is O.K. My neice's dog was walking infront of the recliner and just as her brother Devon put the leg rest up The poor dog was thrown up in the air. Tank God the couch was there. Typing this it sounds funny, but that dog weighs a little over 3 lbs. She could've been killed easily. Recliners are trouble,my kids were always getting caught or pinched by them. |
This literally made my jaw drop. Yahhh, I'm so glad Missy's okay!!! Oh my goodness. Such a miracle! |
Thanks for being supportive everyone. We are normally very cautious with the recliner. The kids had *just* asked me if it was ok that they sit on it because Missy was asleep at my feet. For some reason Missy got up without me noticing. I had already disabled the recliner so that the foot rest couldn't be raised and blocked the area behind so that Missy couldn't get caught underneath it. I never in a million yrs thought she could squeak under the front if it was rocked too hard. Ya live, ya learn I guess. Never again will I own a recliner/rocker. It's not safe for pets or children. |
Missy was truly blessed. That could have been an unhappy ending for sure. Those recliners are so comfy but the damage they can do a small pup is really scary. I am so happy your Missy is ok. I have read where they have fallen off the back of the recliner and gotten severly injured. I did come down on Buddy one night, he never sleeps there, never, and he screamed, I screamed and he ran around the room not knowing what to attack first he was so upset. I can laugh at his reaction now but at the time I was so scared I had hurt him. Accidents happen. Your poor children must have been so frightened. Glad everyone is ok. Missing is one strong little lady. |
Big hugs for little Missy. :hug:So glad she's fine. Wow what a scare. Poor little thing. They really are quick. |

Anyways, I was expecting some people to bash me, and I was prepared for that. Alot of people feel that Yorkies and small children don't mix. My children are very kind and gentle with animals, and would never intentionally hurt any animal. They were devastated when this happened to Missy. We implemented alot of new "house rules" when we got Missy and the children have been incredible about following each and every one of them. They aren't even allowed to hold Missy while standing up and they must be seated on the floor with Missy in their lap if they want to hold her. I thought that we had taken every precaution to make sure that Missy was safe, but I guess not. I'm just so glad that she is OK. Thanks again for all the kind and supportive posts. I appreciate it  |
I can only imagine how scary this was for you, I am glad that everything turned out the way it did. I too believe that positive thought and prayer can really make a difference. Big hugs to you and Missy. |
How scary! I'm so glad Missy is OK. :) |

Our recliner is my husband's "comfort zone and haven" after he has worked hard all day, and I would never ask him to give it up. HOWEVER, I am constantly watching and worrying over Bonnie. She is so nosey, and wants to stick her little nose and head where they don't belong. I feel like I am on "recliner watch" all night. "Bonnie get your head out of there" "Bonnie move away from there" "Don't get up -Bonnie is under the foot rest" etc!! What happened to Missy is one of my greatest fears. Only it wouldn't be the weight of two small children.... I am so glad Missy is alright. Maybe it scared her enough that she won't try to run under there again. |
My brother and sister n law have a recliner .and lots of little dogs in the house. I hate that thing. It could have happened to anyone. Children or not. Recliners are dangers , when having little animals around . My SIL sits in that chair the most, u can't see the dogs at all underneath that chair. She the SIL is a heavy set woman, so she likes the comfort of the oversized chair. IMO, at their house, it's an accident waiting to happen. I am very happy your little missy is ok. That was a very close call. I beleive your little son had the power of faith on his side. |
