W.A.L.K.I.E.S Question! Hey Everyone! I was just wondering for those of you who have teapots  , both of mine tip the scales at 14lbs the immense beasts that they are hahah! Im still having trouble with them pulling, now i know that yorkies have problems with the trachea collapsing, but i was wondering as they are quite big would it be worth trying a collar to control them better? i just dont think that the harnesses are working for them?! Any advice as always is greatly recieved! XxX |
My Laya is about 8 lbs and I still can't use a collar on her. She immediately starts coughing and gagging. She pulls on her harness too. I was at a dog show and bought a wacky walker, and it actually worked for us. It is a rubber leash that looks like a bungee cored sort of. As they pull it pulls back giving them a little correction. I was skeptical but decided to try it and it made a huge difference in our walks. wackywalkr.com |
I have a 14 lb 'puller' and I just ordered a Walk-Nice harness from Chattiesmom. It has a ring on the front so when she pulls it will turn her around to face you. I can't wait to get it and try it out. Here is a link for more info. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...elections.html |
If you are consistent with making them heel they eventually will learn, but you have to be consistent. If some days you let them pull then they will forget what they learned the previous day. I pet sit for many dogs and some take one pull to heel and others take a few walks. Even my friends Pug who is completely spoiled and normally walked on a retractable leash (and he is never pulled when he is sniffing), is fine after a few walks. He is worse at pulling than any of the labs or goldens or GSD's I've walked. Crazy, as he is only 18 lbs. It happens every time the dog comes to me and I have to retrain each time. |
I have a 14lber and the Premier Easy Walk harness worked WONDERS for him. The very first time he had it on, he stopped the pulling and he walks right beside me. |
I just love that you spell the word 'walkies' b/c they might hear, resp. read it and get all exited!!! I have a teapot too and I tried the gentle leader that worked perfectly for him. Then I used some of the dog psychology methods Cesar Milan shows in his TV program and that works even better... |
