homemade yogurt? Anyone else? I have been making yogurt at home for about 5 years or so now :p It's really yummy and EASY....plus with all of the health benefits for tooth and gum disease, I think ALL yorkies and humans should be eating it daily  It costs me about $1.00 for a QUART of homemade greek style yogurt or I can pay $6.00 for 16 ounces in the store  It can take as little as 4 hours in the "incubator" up to about 36 hours for a more SOUR yogurt. I tend to do longer time for a couple of reasons.1) A TRUE YOGURT (hard to come by) is incubated for at least 24 hours 2) I LIKE the more tart flavor 3) I tend to use mine in place of sour cream or mayo in lots of recipes ;) Anyone else make yogurt or interested in giving it a go? |
Would love to try to make some. My babies get yogurt every afternoon when I get home. |
I would love to know how to make it. I eat the Activia Vanilla Yogurt every morning. I take four tablespoons of the yogurt and add a cup of ice water to it, shake it and pour it over my cereal. Yummy. |
There is a lot of different methods to accomplish the same thing (great yogurt) I have a Salton yogurt incubator ($20) that I fill with ultra pasteurized milk, 2T of Greek yogurt(after the 1st batch you can use your own yogurt for this step) and a bit of powdered milk for thickness and extra calcium. Put all in the incubator and plug in! :D Leave for 4 - 36 hours depending on the level of health benefits and tartness you desire! I make a batch every 3rd day for our needs. Add jam or berries before serving if you want a flavored version. |
giving yogurt to your babies does it make their hair fall out whats the benefit to giving them yogurt just curious |
I haven't made the homemade yogurt but I do make my own Kefir which I give to the dogs on occassion and the rest I use for smoothies. For those of you who have never heard of kefir it is similar to yogurt ,has about 10 different probiotic cultures in it and tastes very similar to yogurt. You start with a starter packet of culture put it into a quart of whole milk ( you can use 2% ) and let it sit on the counter at room temp. for 24 hours or longer if you want it really thick. The culture is separated and then put into the next quart of milk and keeps going. If I want to take a break from the kefir for a while I just put the clump of culture in a freezer bag and freeze it. Yorkies are prone to stomach issues as well as tooth and gum disease. The properties of yogurt have been proven to help with both of those issues. I eas yogurt myself for healthy gum tissue :D |
I make yogurt at least 2 times a month . We love it. I also use it in place of sour cream |
how long can yogurt be stored after use? |

I *think* it will keep 3-4 weeks.....mine never makes it that long :p |
Can someone give detailed instructions on making Yogurt? Thanks |

I used to make mine all the time when my kids were little. I used mason jars and a camping cooler to do it. I flavoured the yogurt with fresh fruit, instant pudding powder or jello powder. |
Sam, Lola and Gia get yogurt everyday..they love it.. |
if i buy it what band or favors are best of furbabys? of people who dont like the kitchen...like me:D |
It 's best to use plain organic with live cultures. I use Stoneyfield plain non-fat you can get at Walmart in the quart tub. |
I understand not liking cooking (although I love it....) this really requires NO effort at all :p I feel like I'm doing everything I can for her poor teeth and gums (she had periodontal disease when we adopted her :( but I see dramatic improvement with the daily yogurt feedings  |
I found a site that told you how to make it in a crockpot. Here is the link A Year of Slow Cooking: You Can Make Yogurt in Your CrockPot! it sounds very interesting..... |
We make our own vegan yogurt and it purely rocks! I never could eat regular dairy yogurt as a kid, it just ooged me out so I didn't think I'd like this either but it is BOMB DIGGITY!!! I've been making it with blackberries lately since I've found a great farmer with fresh ones. mmmm |

I give Sugar about a quarter of a cup a day. I give it to her plain ~ no fruit~ but thats just because I've never TRIED giving it to her with fruit ;) I don't really know anything about yogurt drops except that they are dehydrated yogurt. I assume the culture stays alive and active - not sure on that one. |

Do you add your blackberries to the finished yogurt? I LOVE LOVE making ssmoooothies with homemade yogurt! :D |
Yep, I toss them in when we're going to eat it so they're fresh. We also make smoothies with them. |
