I googled and found this: True sudden death (which seems to be what you are describing) is a fairly rare event in dogs. There are a number of reasons that this can occur and I probably won't think of all of them, but here is a partial list: hypoadrenocorticism (Addison's disease) subaortic stenosis (a defect in the aorta that can cause sudden death) aneurysms thromboembolic events (usually pulmonary) -- blood clots that lead to sudden death cardiomyopathy (weakness of the heart muscles, can occur secondary to viruses or parasites like Neospora caninum in dogs) supraventicular tachycardia -- this is the event that is probably most commonly called a "heart attack" in dogs, even though it is not like heart attacks as are seen in humans, ischemia of the heart muscle due to arterial blockage, which are fairly rare in dogs (although they do occur . Other types of arrhythmia are also possible causes of sudden death. bleeding events -- these can occur for no apparent reason but we see sudden death from hemangiosarcoma tumors which occur due to bleeding induced by the tumors and it is sometimes the first sign of a problem. I think of these as being among the more common causes of sudden hemorrhage in patients six years of age or above toxins --- usually there are some signs associated with toxins but carbon monoxide poisoning (not likely since everyone else is OK) would cause death without much in the way of clinical signs strokes are also uncommon in dogs but do occur sometimes, especially in dobermans parasites -- there are reports of sudden death associated with lungworm infection, Neospora caninum infection, roundworms, hookworms and heartworms in dogs. These are the causes of sudden death that I can come up with. I am not sure that this list is all that helpful since it would take a post-mortem examination to rule in or rule out many of these problems. However, most of them are not contagious or likely to affect more than one dog in a household, so hopefully that will hold true for your household. I am so so sorry. I would check into the lawn fertilizer. They have a long residue effect. I would call the fertilizer company and ask for all the chemicals and look them up. Also, have you water your flowers with any fertilizer that she could have possibly drank the water from? Again, I am so sorry. RIP little girl. |
So sorry about your baby.:( I know your hearts must be broken. Was she dehydrated at all? 2 years a go I got home to my lil 3 lb chi breathing like that. I took her to the Dr. and she died of kidney failure within 4 hours. She was completely dehydrated and she was fine earlier that morning. Apparently she had problems all along and I had no clue. I also read recently that dog food with by products and chemicals can cause organ failure. I now feed Holistic food to all my animals. I dont know if that caused it, but I want to do everything I can RIGHT. I hope your other Yorkie is ok with the loss of his buddy. Big Hugs to you both! www.healthyhappypets.biz |
I am so sorry for your loss. It might be just me but dont you have to wait 2 weeks for the lawn furtalizer ( sp. ) to completly sink in? Atleast thats what ours did. :( I am so sorry about Ginger. |
I am so very sorry for the loss of Ginger. Terrible tragedy. I hope you find out what caused it so you will be at peace and keep her brother safe. I can't imagine the shock to go to bed with a healthy pup and wake up and find it so very sick. Hugs, |

I am so sorry for your loss. I don't know how I would handle such an unexpected death. I think I would definitely ask the vet to find out what happened. It would really bother me not to know. I hope the sibling will be okay. |
I am so sorry for your sudden loss of your little guy. My Pixie had a bad reaction to fertilizer on the lawn but not from eating it just from being on it, so maybe that could be the cause. |
So sorry for your loss :(. You never know these days what happens to our animals. I had a 7 years old that got diabete and lost her sight. My sister had a 8 month old die during the night at the vet. She was there to be spayed, vet doesn't know why she died. She had a 2 year old that paralyzed all of a sudden and had to be put down. Again the vet doesn't know why. I suspect vaccine but is it that I don't know. Like my mother says, before we had dogs that never seen a vet and lived long healthy lives. Now you never know and it's kind of nerve racking. |
