4.5 lb at 12 weeks :( Oh my, I just got back from the vet and my yorkie weights 4.5 lbs at 12 weeks. I was hoping he'd be around 7-9 pounds as an adult. Looking at the chart he'll be 12 lbs +. Am I wrong in my calculations? |
It really will be a wait and see, those charts are not really accurate... |
You double the weight at 12 weeks so he may be 9 lbs or a little more. I have an 11 lb yorkie and he is still a really small dog |
I think you will love him regardless of his weight :) |
Sophie was 2.1 lbs at 12 weeks. She is now 8 lbs at 10 mths. My Vet seems to think she'll top out at around 10 lbs. I too thought she'd be around 5-6 lbs. as an adult. But like chachi says, my Sohpie's still a small dog to me. |
Yorkies are like a box of chocolates, you never know what your gonna get lol Just enjoy your healthy pup.:) |
My Chewie is 3 yrs old and weighs 8.5 lbs and Levi is 7 months old and weighs 8.5 lbs. Obviously, Levi will still gain some more weight, but both of my boys are very small. I also have a 12 lb Japanese Chin that weighs 12 lbs and is also small. Don't let the weight thing bother you. |
You are probably looking at a nine pounder. I have an 11 pound Jack Russell who everyone thought was a little dog until we got our Yorkies. So, all things are relative. As long as your 9 pounder is not next to a 3 pounder he will look little and just think how much less fragile he will be! I would probably be thinking about scheduling a neuter in a couple of months though. I am glad the other Chewie's mom posted -- I thought there was another Chewie! It was mixing me up as I did not think Chewie was a puppy. I should have named Rocky "chewie" too from the look of my flip flops! |
some just grow faster than others, and some slower than others. I had got a Maltese male to use as a stud, needed to be small (4-5 lbs) at 9 weeks old he start growing so fast I thought he was going to be 12 lbs grown. He was a fat little guy, at 12 weeks he was aready 4lbs. I thought about place him as a pet becuase I knew I would not be able to use him as a stud, but do you know he is over a year old not and never got over 4.5 lbs. After 12 wks his legs got a little longer, and body a little longer, but ended up being my smallest Maltese. I have one that is 4lbs but Chase looks smaller than the 4 lb one because his legs and body is shorter. I am very happy that I keep him. I named him "Chase" the ladies because he is my stud man!! |
I never knew why so many people prefer their yorkies to grow around 5 lbs or stay small. With the puppies we got we were hoping they would grow to be over 10 lbs! but that never happend. Nana was 1.5 lbs at 3 months old and how she weighs in at 5.5 lbs and Charlie grew a bit more hes 6.7 lbs but hes 9 months old... I'm assuming their full grown at this age... right? |

Sounds like they won't be getting too much bigger. My Stormy is about 4.8-5lbs around there give or take. Her parents were both larger, from what I know her mom was a 9lber and her dad was I think around 7lbs. Stormy was suppose to be bigger but she ended up being pretty small! She's got a short body as well! I guess it all comes down to the individual dog! I myself would prefer a sturdy dog, I wouldn't wanna go any smaller then the size I have already. T.V shows off small tiny purse dogs and everyone thinks oh it's so cute and they would love one, they don't know the truth and the dangers! |

a 10 or 11 lb dog is alot small looking than you would think, either way they are great dogs. |
Mine were 4 & 4.5 pounds at 11 weeks and are now 10 & 12 pounds at 8 months. A bit bigger than I expected but there are some advantages to it & they are still little dogs who are part of our family who we absolutely LOVE :) I was saying one day how I wished they were a bit smaller and my husband said "If they were itty bitty we might have broken them by now!" (they jump & play so much I'm glad they're not SO fragile). I agree with the other comments though...you never know with yorkies what size they will be, they all seem to have minds of their own!! |
that weight chart is a guideline > Yorkies can grow at different rates, and it can be difficult to determine what their adult weight will be. As others have said, a 10LB dog is still small. |
