4.5 lb at 12 weeks :( Oh my, I just got back from the vet and my yorkie weights 4.5 lbs at 12 weeks. I was hoping he'd be around 7-9 pounds as an adult. Looking at the chart he'll be 12 lbs +. Am I wrong in my calculations? |
It really will be a wait and see, those charts are not really accurate... |
You double the weight at 12 weeks so he may be 9 lbs or a little more. I have an 11 lb yorkie and he is still a really small dog |
I think you will love him regardless of his weight :) |
Sophie was 2.1 lbs at 12 weeks. She is now 8 lbs at 10 mths. My Vet seems to think she'll top out at around 10 lbs. I too thought she'd be around 5-6 lbs. as an adult. But like chachi says, my Sohpie's still a small dog to me. |
Yorkies are like a box of chocolates, you never know what your gonna get lol Just enjoy your healthy pup.:) |
My Chewie is 3 yrs old and weighs 8.5 lbs and Levi is 7 months old and weighs 8.5 lbs. Obviously, Levi will still gain some more weight, but both of my boys are very small. I also have a 12 lb Japanese Chin that weighs 12 lbs and is also small. Don't let the weight thing bother you. |
You are probably looking at a nine pounder. I have an 11 pound Jack Russell who everyone thought was a little dog until we got our Yorkies. So, all things are relative. As long as your 9 pounder is not next to a 3 pounder he will look little and just think how much less fragile he will be! I would probably be thinking about scheduling a neuter in a couple of months though. I am glad the other Chewie's mom posted -- I thought there was another Chewie! It was mixing me up as I did not think Chewie was a puppy. I should have named Rocky "chewie" too from the look of my flip flops! |
some just grow faster than others, and some slower than others. I had got a Maltese male to use as a stud, needed to be small (4-5 lbs) at 9 weeks old he start growing so fast I thought he was going to be 12 lbs grown. He was a fat little guy, at 12 weeks he was aready 4lbs. I thought about place him as a pet becuase I knew I would not be able to use him as a stud, but do you know he is over a year old not and never got over 4.5 lbs. After 12 wks his legs got a little longer, and body a little longer, but ended up being my smallest Maltese. I have one that is 4lbs but Chase looks smaller than the 4 lb one because his legs and body is shorter. I am very happy that I keep him. I named him "Chase" the ladies because he is my stud man!! |
I never knew why so many people prefer their yorkies to grow around 5 lbs or stay small. With the puppies we got we were hoping they would grow to be over 10 lbs! but that never happend. Nana was 1.5 lbs at 3 months old and how she weighs in at 5.5 lbs and Charlie grew a bit more hes 6.7 lbs but hes 9 months old... I'm assuming their full grown at this age... right? |

Sounds like they won't be getting too much bigger. My Stormy is about 4.8-5lbs around there give or take. Her parents were both larger, from what I know her mom was a 9lber and her dad was I think around 7lbs. Stormy was suppose to be bigger but she ended up being pretty small! She's got a short body as well! I guess it all comes down to the individual dog! I myself would prefer a sturdy dog, I wouldn't wanna go any smaller then the size I have already. T.V shows off small tiny purse dogs and everyone thinks oh it's so cute and they would love one, they don't know the truth and the dangers! |

a 10 or 11 lb dog is alot small looking than you would think, either way they are great dogs. |
Mine were 4 & 4.5 pounds at 11 weeks and are now 10 & 12 pounds at 8 months. A bit bigger than I expected but there are some advantages to it & they are still little dogs who are part of our family who we absolutely LOVE :) I was saying one day how I wished they were a bit smaller and my husband said "If they were itty bitty we might have broken them by now!" (they jump & play so much I'm glad they're not SO fragile). I agree with the other comments though...you never know with yorkies what size they will be, they all seem to have minds of their own!! |
that weight chart is a guideline > Yorkies can grow at different rates, and it can be difficult to determine what their adult weight will be. As others have said, a 10LB dog is still small. |
I have a 14lb Yorkie and he's still pretty small, you'd be surprised. I prefer his size. :) |
weight of yorkies I have a 9.5 lb. yorkie, she was going to be 6 or 7 lbs by the breeder.Do you really care how much they weigh, are they healthy, happy and little sweethearts, why does size matter. Mine is actully long, but tiny head and tiny butt and she is thin,I brought her home at 7 weeks, the owner lived in the next town so if I needed her,she was there. By the time she was 10weeks old,she was completely housebroken both ways and she never never does anything in the house, she is very smart and I love her for a beautiful yorkie not size. |
At 6 months my Bea is just less than 3 lbs. I am hoping that she gains to at least 10 lbs. I want her to be healthy and worry about her small size. |

Full grown usually by a year. Ya never know though! |
Glad my momma didn't frown when I turned out bigger than my female "littermates/sisters!" LOL! She still loves me! And I can reach the blueberries at the very top of the bushes! |
Should get to 9 lbs. |
I think I would prefer my Bailey to be a little larger rather then tiny and so fragile. He was over 9.5 weeks old and less then a lb, now he is over 12 weeks and I can tell he put on weight, he feels so much heavier and I'm delighted! He goes to the vet tomorrow, I'm anxious to see how much he has gained :) |
Well when I look at him at 4.5 lbs Chewie is a tiny thing so another 7 lbs on top, if he goes to 12 lbs, won't be too bad I guess. He is a healthy, cute little thing and loved, that's all that matters really. It's just that I just bought a miniature schnauzer. They grow to about 12 to 14 pounds. She is a year old and weight 25 lbs. She played kinda rough with my 5 lbs poodle so I don't want a repeat  I guess I'll just have to wait and see. |
Tucker was 2.5 pounds at 10 weeks and at almost 10 months old he is around 9 pounds and has been since he was 6/7 months old. He is still very small to me. I have a 4ish pound poodle and they are both the same height. (8 inches) He is very short, compact and solid as a rock. No fat what so ever. lol.. I dont worry so much about him as I do my poodle, even though they are the same height she is very dainty compared to him. He was only "suppose to be" around 4 pounds because his parents were only 4 pounds but Im happy that he is as heavy as he is. You will love your pup no matter how big he gets. :) The bigger he is the more to love!! :) |
A puppy in my last litter was 3 lbs. at 9 weeks, he is over a year old now and weighs 5 1/2 lbs. You just never know! |

Their is some that just wants tiny yorkies, but most just want them to stay in the Standard. Under 7lbs , 10lbs would be out of the standard. At 9 months he is still growing, more likely he will get a little big. If not by weight, by taller, or longer. |

Stella was 4.8 lbs. at 12 weeks, but considering that she's only gained 1 lb since we got her at 13 weeks (she's now 20 weeks), and she's finally starting to look like she "fits her legs," i don't know that she's going to grow a whole lot more. i don't think the growth charts are always very accurate, because if so, she's fallen into a different adult weight every week we've had her! |
