Did You Change The Pups 'GIVEN' Name? I am in LOVE with this one pup, and she is a doll, and i've had a name picked out for ages on what to name my yorkie pup, will keep it secret until it all unfolds, hehe, but the original name though beautiful, is the name of a past pet i had that passed away and KILLED me inside..terrible memories of that (a cat, but cat or dog or iguana, i get attached), so i don't wanna stick to the name she was given, but not sure if that is proper ettique or not. did you change your pups name? i gotto believe there are MANY people out there, who get pups with weird names and change them, but this one already is like 14 wks old, would it be unfair? i'm a sensitive soul, you all are probobly going DUH of course you can change it. when we got our pug, he was also froma breeder, but not given a name, plus was only 8 weeks, so that was easy. thanks:) michelle |
It is fine to change the name the pup will adapt and learn the new name |
Yes, I did. Buddy was welped in Budapest, Hungary and the name listed on his paper's was Cerdi Odon:confused: I'm sure it ment something to his breeder but to me it ment a name change:p So my 3yrs old granddaugher Nicole named him Buddy. |
aww thanks:) i didn't know how the breeder may feel about it, AND the dog, but i guess they can 'adjust'..sort of makes me sad a lil, idk, like i said im a sensitive soul..i think of everyone including animals b4 myself, so i just wanted to be sure. OH yes, that name DEFINATELY needed a change. i can't imagine saying Cerdi Odon, everytime i wanted to call my dog, lol. buddy is very cute:) hugs, michelle |
Our first yorkie was a rescue.. it was on the condition.. new town and new name he was around 2 years old..we had no problem with him at all changing his name..so especially going to a new home new surrounding and new life makes it easy... Hope this helps... |
Don't worry about changing the dog name, he will adapt no problems and the breeder won't care. And you can always use both name to registered the dog if you want to keep the original name too. |
I changed both of my pups names... and they did fine =) |
Oh yes, I changed his name form the given name. My breeder picks strange names, in my opinion. His mom is Muffy and dad is Doey. Riot's given name was Deeker! lol |

To the OP- I've changed the names of every pet I ever got from the animal shelter. They come up with some pretty odd names. It always works out just fine. |
I wanted to change my dog's name when I got him from the breeder. His name is Harley and I thought it was waaaay too common and didn't make me think of him at all. I wanted his name to be Judah because he had a lion's heart in a tiny body lol! But everytime I tried to change it my friends and family would insist that they thought Harley was cuter and they loved his little name. I gave up. He's still Harls. I just wish I'd never told him the breeder's name in the first place lol! |

Wow, thank you. This should be very interesting. I did ask someone a couple of years ago and she said that dog's are named after streets and villages:( or towns. Can't wait. |
I definitely understand how you feel. My little Bella was originally named "Daisy." I think Daisy is an adorable name, but my mother fell in love with the name Bella. So I had the breeder start calling her Bella before I picked her up (nearly 2 weeks) to make the transition easier. Now she has a million nicknames and she answers to all of them. :p |
I think it is fine to rename him. I got Pixie at 13 months and while not a name I would have chosen sh looks like a Pixie so we kept it. |
my breeder refers to all of them as "puppies" or luvs or sweetie, so that there is no name confusion. When we picked my Dad's pup up and had to keep him 2 weeks it drove us NUTS because he was a surprise and didn't have a name. We refered to him as "little little" or "itsy bitsy" cause he is 2 pounds, but now he is Callum and an absolute DOLL! I think its odd for someone else to even try and name YOUR dog! Kate |
We changed Phoebe's name, her previous name, Miley although very cute, we just couldn't get used to it. She didn't care, she learned her new name the first day. |
I changed Couver's name. The lady that had him before me named him something like 'Joe Bob'. I was willing to keep it if it was a nice name... but no way was I going to call my puppy 'Joe Bob'!! Haha... |
I do rescue and we often change the dogs name and then the new owners often change the dogs name and they adapt really well to having their names changed and they are usually older dogs... |
Kayla was called Milly when I got her at 5months but it was also the name I had planned on calling my daughter for short so I had to change it.... then I ended up not calling Amelia Milly as a nickname. |

However, we had one little guy we named Honor. His new Mom named him Kubota.. I'm still not sure my name wasn't better! |

To get them to respond to their new name, just say the name and give them a treat right after. Do it over and over again and they will soon learn their new name. Good Luck! |
My Sebastian was named Moe before I got him. He was from a litter of four and his breeder named them Larry, Curly, Moe, and I forget the other ones name it started with an A. But anyways I love the Three Stooges and all Moe was just not the name for him! I have all my Yorkies named after Disney characters and Moe just didn't fit. I had Sebastian picked out before I ever found my man. He is my baby and the Love of my life. He goes everywhere; I mean everywhere. Also with my puppies I give them names just to distinguish them on my site. I actually never call them by the names I have on my site. The last litter I had the families that adopted them kept their given names. I told them they could change their names I always call them babies. You know come here babies. Let's go potty babies. I love you babies. They said it was o.k. and liked the names and it made it easier for them they said. The puppies I have now are named after Ratatouille characters. I don't know if anyone will keep these names but it's alright with me if they change them.:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
I changed both. Ivy was called Pepsi and Max was called Ryan. I couldn't call him Ryan that is my sons name, even the middle name was the same as my sons. And their birthday are only days apart. I think someone was telling me to take him :D:D:D |
I got my Mozes when he was 3 years old and he did fine with the name change. |
name change Hey, we just got an 11 week old male puppy to go with our female. His breeder nick- named him Bam-Bam but we have changed his name to Hobbs. She was not offended. She told me she just gives them names so she won't get to attached. I stay in close contact with her and even send puppy reports and pictures. |

We changed Chase's name to Jackson and he was a year and a half old when we got him. He had no problem with it at all. |
Our Rescue got a new name and we didn't adopt her till she was 4 years old. It took awhile but she learned her new name. Stray dogs that are adopted get new names every day. Given time they learn their new home, familly and name. |
we renamed a couple of ours but they were babies so i do not think they knew their previous names anyway :) |
Changing a pup's name should be easy. A such a young age they respond more to your voice than a name. Cindy was named Cuddles when we got her at age 3 months. C'mon....Cuddles? yeah right. The register is to document the lineage, and the pup will never be able to read that. Now, changing boat's name involves having a qualified skipper and chaplain to invoke the god Neptune to pardon us for doing what we are doing and resting the boat's name forever. Then, re-christening said boat with the proper bottle of spirits awakens the boat and is forever (sometimes) blessed by Neptune, etc. Kind of like being re-born. Not doing that means you'll never catch fish, never win a sailboat race, never have a girlfriend suddenly desire to skinny dip off the boat, you name it. |
I bought a cat once from the local shelter. They named her Drop Off because she was left at the door. Obviously I changed it to Sadie. After that, we bought a four year old yorkie whose name was Baby. I tried to change her name to Zaz Zoo (after on old time actress) but one day she slipped her leash collar (scared me to death!)ran from our yard toward the street and I called her and called her by the new name we were using but she wouldn't stop so I screamed BABY and she came right back. From then on we just went with Baby  for the 15 years we were blessed with her. We just bought our second Yorkie who is 6 mo and already named Hazel. I kinda think it's a cute name so we'll keep it! Jackie- Mom to :aimeeyork:aimeeyork Sophie & Hazel |
