Poor baby. I can't believe they didn't take care of her! That is outrageous! Mine all stay at home with my dad when we go on vacation. My dad lives with us and he knows how I take care of my babies. He gives the same love and care I do. The last time I went on vacation I had a really good friend of mine take care of my girls and their babies. My dad had the rest. I only leave them with family or really great friends that I trust!:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork

Unfortunately I live in Japan on a military installation. I plan on doing all that is within reason without over stepping my boundaries about getting the word out that this place is wretched and no place for an animal to stay.

So I picked up marley today and I am disgusted. I posted " I am sad" about not wanting to take her to the kennel. I should have listened to my gut. We were gone from the 1st thru the 6th. I called on the 3rd to see how she was doing and to ease my mind. NO ANSWER! I called all day and finally left a message. NO CALL BACK. I continued to call everyday until this morning when we went to pick her up. We got there at 9:57. They open at 10. The lady opened to door because it was locked and my DH was banging on it. She told us that she would have to charge us $35 for an early pick up if we did not wait 3 more minutes. Are you kidding me!! So we waited of course. When marley saw us she went nuts and barking and jumping. I ran to her cage and thats when I became highly pissed. She was covered in urine and her eyes were all crusty. Her cage smelled like urine and fecal matter and a mess. Her food bowels from home were missing and replaced with big ones for like a lab or another dog of that size. When I got her out of the cage she kept wanting to bolt for the door to leave. Red Flag! I asked where my food bowls were and the lady acted like she didnt know what i was talking about. I had to go look for MY bowls!!
She handed me all the supplies i had left ( urine covered bed and blanket!!! ) all her treats were still there( they had not given her any!!! ) and her food was almost untouched!! I asked her why no one returned my calls and she said that she didnt work that weekend and she would have someone call me about it. I got my baby home and poured 1/2 cup of kibble and she gobbled it all down!! she never did that before! Then to spoil her I cooked a 1/4 size chix breast and she ate all that too!! To top that off she was slurping water down like no tomorrow!! They must have starved my baby!! After she ate all that I thought surely she would puke it up but she didnt. Then the kennel manager called. My DH wanted to talk to the lady but he was so pissed I thought that was a bad idea. I can be more tactful. So I asked my questions and she told me that they are closed on the 3rd to observe the holiday but someone was there to take care of the animals. Yeah so why didn't they call me back I asked. So the lady tells me they were two new people in training and they don't know how to check the messages. I called everyday like every 30 minutes. You mean to tell me they dont know how to answer a phone?... no answer to that one....I said what about saturday and sunday. well we are closed sunday and the same people were working saturday. Good lord, how hard is it to listen to an answering machine.
So anyways.. needless to say I will not be taking any vacations that I can not take my baby with me or find someone who i trust and is responsible enough to watch her. I pay good money for you to take care of my dog and leave her with what are supposed to be professionals and come back to find her in a mess and starving. Now I think the reason they gave her such big food bowls is for the days they were closed that someone "supposedly" came in to take care of the dogs. Makes me think they just threw in some food to last a couple days and said screw it. Sorry for rambling but I can't believe what all my baby might have gone through. She is home and bathed and has a fully tummy now though :)

I wish I could turn their butts in but nothing would come of it. I live on a military base in Japan. I'm pretty sure its the same thing when it comes to seeing a military doctor. You can't sue a military doctor if you are military. Thats why so many people are skepitcal of on-base doctors and seek second opinions. Because they can't get sued for malpractice. If you screw up on a military base you are pretty much covered which makes me sick. I just will tell people I know not to take their dogs there. I might be contacting the base commander ( big shot who runs the base ) about how deplorable this facility is though!

Definately write a very detailed letter to the base commander. Keep it respectful, but list all of your facts! There was no excuse for the poor treatment your baby got while you were gone. It makes me even madder that it happened at a military base! Ask your husband to get the right chain of command for the complaints, but put it in writing. If there is one thing the military will do is "cover their butts" when a complaint is put in writing. It is sort of like getting written up by a superior. The charges MUST be answered. If possible, have a witness statement that will agree that your pup and her things were urine soaked, matted and crusty. Is there a base vet? They should be contacted too. Definately get your letter out to everyone you can, from the base Commanding Officer, Special Services, MW&R, Vet Services, Army equivalent of the Ombudsman in the Navy (someone the wives can go to for help?), and is there a base top enlisted advisor? They can also be of help looking into services that are incompetent or abusive. It is worth it to put some time into this so it won't happen to another unsuspecting person. I would have thought you could put your trust in a kennel on base too!

So sorry this happened to Marley!

BTW there are good boarding facilities. I left my JR and first Yorkie at one for 4 days once. My toys and dishes were kept with them, they used the food & treats I brought, my bag had dated baggies and the appropriate ones were gone when I picked them up, my dogs were bathed, groomed, and happy when I picked them up, they did answer the phone each day when I called to check on them, they had logs of every potty outing they got (6 per day), it was entirely different from the horrible experience you had.

I also visited unexpectedly before I left them there. I saw the place in operation and it was all neat, clean, and being run like clockwork. The workers all seemed to genuinely love the dogs and gave them lots of attention. I got a "window" suite, with a little toddler bed for mine. They had lots of room to play and look out on the world. Course their lodging cost almost as much as ours, but it was worth it to know they were well spoiled. Just adding that so you might think about it again some day when you have other choices besides this place that let you down.

Update!!

sOooOO..... I talked to the lady at the kennel again. She told me that she talked to the vet here on base and even though he told her that the bacterial infection Marley contracted was the kind you get from a kennel that he couldnt say she got it from there.. WHAT THE HELL!!! So therefore no refund. She also told me the 3 days of playtime that I paid for were not rendered so she could only give me a refund for that. What a load of BS. I was on the phone with her for at least 15 minutes going around and around. To add insult to injury the lady even offered Marley to come back!! at a discount price! HAHA! What a joke. She said this because she insisted that Marley was a happy-go-lucky dog and had fun at the kennel and I could bring her back and see for myself. Makes me want to puke just thinking about taking her back the that hell-hole. I told her that I will never do business with them and that I will tell other people of my experience and she said " oh i understand, I have two cats and I know what if feels like to want the best care for your animals" yea yeah whatever....

So I went to the IG( Inspector General ) on base here. That is the equivalent of the BBB for the military and filed a complaint. I wrote out a loooong, point by point letter of why I want to be reimbursed and vet bills paid. The man I spoke with and that is dealing with my case said he understands because he has a dog too he considers family but nothing will probably come of it because we can't prove that she got it from there even though all red flags point to them. I am at my wits end. Even though nothing might come of this I want to make it known all over this base that the kennel is a piece of crap and to never take your pets there. He still said he will try his hardest to get something accomplished. He sent me all the paperwork to get started on this via email and I have started the process and spoke with the appropriate people. Wish me luck guys. I'm not even doing this for the money. I could care less. I'm doing this for Marley.

I'm so sorry to hear about the awful experience. Yes, you have to trust your gut. Nobody loves our animals like we do, unless they are family. Maybe next time you can get a close friend or family member to come to your house to stay. That's what I'm doing for my vacation this year. Now, I realize just how fortunate I am that my son and daughter in law are coming here to keep the babies. I just can't imagine what you and your baby went through. So, so sorry.

good luck me and denzel are praying for you please keep everyone updated :)

I do hope your baby recovers well. Totally unacceptable.

Well reading this thread has made me feel rather nervous as Im putting Tia in kennels this Aug for a week.Ive visited them twice and they fell in love with her and the owner carried her around and Tia loved her , in fact I didn't think the owner was going to hand her back. Anyway we checked it out and it was clean and the dogs looked well cared for.
Asked lots of questions . I noticed one of the staff was brushing a dog and I asked do you offer a grooming service then ? and the reply was no but every year this dog comes to us in a poor condition and we do a full groom for free. I was quite impressed by that, and small dogs are seperated from the big ones.
Ill let you know how we get on. Did your baby need to have the kennel cough vaccine?
Most uk kennels require you to do so. I would send a review if they advertise their kennels but I just hope your baby has a full recovery.
