Cherrio!, Cherrio!,Cheerio! Yuriy is now 8 full weeks old to-day and doing brilliant. We thought toilet training was going to be sooooooo easy but our little fella has decided its going to be a little more difficult. However. Did I see someone on here suggest Cherrios as a treat for Yorkies? It took me ages to find them here. If they are allowed to pups, from what sort of age do you think we could give them as a treat? Our fella is already fully on solid food (Orijen) and although we have to break it up into smaller lumps he is feeding and drinking well.:D |
No takers for this one?:( |
cheerios should be fine for the dog, as long as he/she is on solid food there should be no problem, my dog cash ate similar cereal at that age for a treat. |

I feed Addie Honey Nut Cheerios every once in a while when I'm snacking on them and she seems to like them. I've never noticed any bad side effects. I can't imagine they would be bad for a pup unless you fed them tons and tons. I would think since they're made from grains it's okay. It's probably not the best treat because most processed foods aren't great for dogs, but I'm not sure if they're bad. Hopefully someone else is actually helpful! :D ETA: Oh good. I'm glad someone else posted. I'd hate for anyone to rely only on my advice! :D |
I tried cheerios when Ella was just 9 weeks but she didnt like them. I think they are safe tho. Just break them into smaller pieces- like in half maybe. If he doesnt like them tried boiled chicken and give him itsy bitsy pieces when he potties! Oh I forgot.... Make sure they are the plain kind for a puppy! |
I looked it up and I found this... I am going to try it now!! " As with any treat,in moderation cheerios are fine for you dog. They also make great training treats as they are less fattening then most training treats you can buy at pet stores. And obviously if your dog has a known allergy to grains its not a good idea. P.S. another treat that my dog loves is popcorn with NO butter or salt- we just save a little for him before we add the good stuff and he can be a part of movie night too!" |
Cheerios Use the plain Cheerios as they are healthier. This is what I use for training my dog and also gave when he was a puppy. If they don't like them, then I guess you will have to come up with something else. |
Sophie and Ruby love Honey Nut Cheerios. They work well for training. |
i also read that cherrio s were a good training treat somewhere on here. so i tried them .lily throws them up and chases them but really dont like to eat them so dont work well for me. now if it is meat of some sort she will goe crazy for it. |
The breeder we purchased Gracie from said that she LOVED honey nut cheerios. I even bought one of those little Cheerio containers like they use for toddlers to keep her "snacks" in. Little stinker won't touch them. ;) I haven't found a snack that she does like-tried Wellness puppy snacks-nope. She LOVES boiled chicken though. :) |
We have 2 schnauzers and 2 yorkies. I give them Cherrios to snack on sometimes and they love them. Our baby yorkies is only 15wks. old so he doesn't get any yet. I give him the little baby snack bones that Ole' Mother Hubbard puts out and he loves those. |
Hey you guys, Thanks very much for the responses, some of which I laughed at.:D HOWEVER no-one has commented on the age issue. Yuriy is only 8 weeks old. Previously, when I had Labradors before they ate anything! Do you think 8 weeks is too early. The thing is that he is really doing very well in potty training without anything as a treat. Love the popcorn idea. I can make my own without sugar/saly. Love to hear from anyone on the age thing. |
By the way how old was your puppy when you got him? I thought Orijen was a little high on protein for Yorkies. NO POPCORN, small breeds shldn't have corn period.... |
I use Honey nut or Banana Cheerios for training ( see my album on school), they love them and during the entire 5 minute training session, they each might get 5 pieces. I've been using them for like eight years with no ill effects. |
My two dogs ate Cheerios for training treats sometimes. They loved eating them. |
