Knots Knots KNOTS! Libbie contantly has knots in her hair. I'll remove like, most of it one day. Give it two days she'll have a ton of knots again. Is there something I should be doing? I do admit I don't comb her everyday like I should but I do it every so often. (she hates getting groom/bath) What should I do? |
Keep brushing her , and everyday. That is the only way to keep the matts out. Otherwise they are going to keep getting tighter and hurt her . Use a conditioning spray to help loosen the matts. :aimeeyork |

When you brush her, make sure she is wet. Never brush dry hair. I spray on conditioner then brush... |
I'm a bit confused because Jemma's hair is thin and silky soft. It never seems to tangle. hmmmmmm |
If she is a "mat-ter" you are going to need to be very diligent in brushing her every day. Dressing her will make matting worse. The best brush I have found is the cc wooden pin brush. It literally glides through mats. Best money I have ever spent. Pin Brushes |
If Libbie is a puppy you might be dealing with puppy mats and even with daily brushing, she will still get them. You'll just have to be diligent about brushing/combing out everyday until the fluffy puppy stage is over. If she's an adult, it's like others have mentioned, daily brushing, not on dry hair and Deb is right, the wooden pin brush is the best. |
A good shampoo and conditioner helps too. A good detangler spray also |

2 of mine have cottony coats and 1 a silky. Silky is a dream, never mats. The other 2 I brush daily and still cannot keep them mat free. I use Emu oil spray to help with the mats and use the CC wooden pin brush, CC butter comb and the CC pin brush. I have no started to shave their tummies and cut their legs shorter since you can't tell from the outside and it helps with the matting. Keeping cottony coated yorkies in coat is a labor of love, many times I have thought of cutting them short but I love the full coat. |
I remember Jackson's puppy hair was awful. I had to brush it 3-4 times a day to make it look decent. Once he got his first groom, it was a piece of cake. Now he's basically shaved down, so no brushing for Jackson, which he loves! |

This is interesting. I know if Uni has a huge mat, I spray her with her detangling spray(wet). but when I comb her normally(dry), without huge mats, I still get hairs that come out either way. I have always heard that on human hair never to brush/comb wet, b/c hair is more fragile and suspectable to breakage then, so why not yorkie hair? Either way, when Uni was a baby, her fur tangled more. Now that it's longer, it doesn't mat as much and I comb her every other day, I think. If your baby is less than one year, just keep brushing everyday, even if their fur is not tangled. Get then used to it. It's part of yorkie life, and part of yorkie parent life! |
