my new 8 week old morkie puppy! on saturday, i got a new puppy. he is an 8 week old morkie. his name is tiki. tiki is very small and fluffy. he is my baby. the only problem is that tiki is not behaving well. i know he is a puppy, but he's becoming almost too much for me and my family, my mom's even considering giving him away and i really dont want that! tiki sleeps in a crate at night, and when he's in there he usually poops everywhere! i dont understand this though because he is not allowed to eat or drink past 5. i take him out every 2 hours, and he usually does his business outside when i take him out.he has peed in the house at least 3 times since we got him, and my mother does not like this. i dont know what to do! please help :( |
He is just a baby it will take a while to potty train him. What did your Mom expect when you got a pup? Just like a child they have to be trained to go to the bathroom where you want them to |

I would not ever expect an 8 week old pup to not have accidents, just like I wouldn't expect a 6 month old child to be potty trained. I also think no food or water after 5 pm is a little extreme. Little toy breed pups are so prone to hypoglycemia. Even if you get up at 6am to feed, thats 13 hours with no food or water. You wouldn't withhold food from a baby for that long. |

As far as potty training, your dog is quite young. It takes time and being persistance. This is just part of raising a pup--sounds like neither you or your mom thought this through very well. You both seem to have some pretty unrealistic expectations for this little guy. Maybe a different form of training would better suit you and your guy? Reserach some different methods and see if there is one that would work out better for you all. Good luck and welcome to YT. :) |
It's totally unreasonable to expect a pup that young not to potty in the house on occasion. Make sure you go outside with her when she goes to potty, and give her a lot of praise and love when she gets it right. |
I think the formula is that the puppy will hold its urine 1 hr. for every month it is old. I even set a time at night to take my puppies out. Also invest in an ex-pen and some piddle pads.. I still use mine when I can't watch my one 11 yr. whom I don't trust. Another thing that is essential when your are house training a puppy is Nature's Miracle or some sort of enzyme spray. The puppy will go back to the same place time and time again if you don't clean it up with an enzyme cleaner. Don't give up on your baby. Good luck. |

The expen is a great idea. For potty training basics: when the puppy is loose in the house - he must be limited to one room (usu. the family room), the room must be blocked off and all hiding places must be blocked. Lay down some blankets (to save the carpet) and all eyes on the puppy. The idea is to "catch him in the act" and correct the behavior by scooping up the pup and say outside - then take the puppy outside. Stay with and watch the pup until he potties, then praise and treat. Repeat as necessary - be consistent. If the puppy is not being supervised, he must be in a crate. You have friends here on YT who've gone through the same thing. Puppies are an adjustment to your routine - as the puppy gets older, it will get accustom to your rules and routine and will become part of your family. Good luck - and leave the water out. :) |

Please don't make that puppy go without food and especially water for so long. Your breeder is a nut, clearly. Talk to your vet about a REAL feeding schedule. Go over to the training section here and refer to many, many threads on potty training. Get an xpen and some wee wee pads or be prepared to NEVER leave the puppy's side for a very long time. You have to be there to catch him in the act and gently but firmly correct him. Don't ever spank or hit your puppy and for goodness sakes, don't rub his nose in it. Only praise and treat the good behaviors. He'll learn to do what he knows makes you happy but you can expect many months of potty training if your puppy is anything like most....and I'm sure he is.:) |
