No, I groom out of my home.

This is what I see a lot of in our area. Almost everyone that is showing more than one dog, comes in with one of these set ups. mary, my dogs are out in the house too . I do keep my show dogs in oil but I do not wrap them. How do you keep your other dogs from tearing the wraps off thus pulling the hair out. This happened to a friend of mine about a year or so ago and she is still trying to grow that piece of hair back. Is there a trick to it/

Means, I ended up with nothing to breed him with for reasons of some being too small for him, some being his own daughters. I had to bring in an outcrossed male.

I also should have mentioned contracts when buying from a reputable breeder. There should be one regardless if you are buying for pet or show. Breed clubs have this in their Code of Ethics.
If buying for pet, there should be health guarantees for genetic issues LS and Legge-Calve-Perthes, mine also requires that if it cannot be kept by a new owner it will come back to me. And I have clauses for nonbreeding if the dog or pup is not spay/neuter before leaving my home. There should be a contract protecting both the buyer and the breeder.
For a show dog, it should be at minimum over 6 months of age. Also especially if you are not really known to the breeder, they will want to co own it with you to keep some sort of control over what you do. And there should be relatively the same guarantees for genetic issues should any crop up after you get the dog.

My question, is with all the people these days that lie, how do you know if a new owner gets rid of a dog it bought from you without contacting you first?

Good point, that's why I screen very diligently. Many of the ones that do buy from me are referrals they know my Vet or a Vet I can check their references, or they know someone that heard of me from someone I know. I check employers as well I get yelled at, sworn at, because I won't just hand over a dog or puppy.
I am also getting much better at discerning their character. In my contract, I have a fine of $5,000 should it be resold, given away etc.
Actually, people who have bought from me during the interview I mention this clause that it has to come back to me should they not be able to keep it anytime in its lifetime. For those that passed the phone interview and came to my home, told me that was one of the biggest reasons they wanted to deal with me, they didn't have to worry if something happened later or indeed, even now, if they pup didn't work out.
I have gotten calls from people who bought where they should not have pup didn't work out and now didn't know what to do, the breeder wouldn't deal with it. I have gotten calls or emails from people who just got tired of the dog or dont want to keep it for some reason and the breeder wouldn't help that they got it from.
Deal with the right people, be as discerning as possible, and you have a much better chance of getting the right people. Any dog or puppy I have that I decide can go to pet home, has a home with me, until or if that right owner comes along.

Your post gives some very good examples of what to expect from a reputable breeder. It's funny, people use the word "reputable" in lots of different ways, and to some people it simply means "show breeder" to others, it means "lots of people have mentioned her name," while to others, the word just means "snooty or someone on a high horse" :D I believe that a truly reputable breeder feels responsible for dogs she has helped to produce, and their well being should always be her number one concern.

Thank you for your post, I think this helps others looking for a breeder, know what to expect from a truly reputable breeder. Joey's breeder had the same stipulations, I could not sell him to anyone or give him away, and still don't really feel like I "own" him but she allowing me to take care of him. I think the tips you give on checking the background, employment and vet are something that every breeder should do, but so many breeders are just in the business of "selling dogs", and they have no genuine interest in the dogs' futures, just how it affects their bottom line.

I've not had a problem with the others tearing the wraps out. Usually it's the dog itself attempting to get those silly things off. Tea Tree Oil works very well. Another thing is clear Mitchums deoderant, just a bit on the wrap.

I thought Tea Tree Oil was very dangerous for pets to consume??

No problems here, been using it for years.
