APRI or AKC I am really new to all this YT stuff! I am sure you have talked about this subject before. I am looking for a puppy,ALOT of them are registered APRI!:thumbdown Does this mean a lower registered dog? Can you breed them? I am not sure I want to have any puppies but you never know! So I was just wanting some help with maybe what some of you have your dogs registered as!! I have only heard of AKC registry. Thanks so much for all of you welcoming me to YT!! I appreciate it!!:D |
Personally, I would never buy a dog that wasn't AKC registered. I'm sure many that are registered with others are wonderful dogs, but from what I understand some of these registries were implemented because for some reason or another were not eligible for the AKC. For instance someone buys a male and female with limited AKC, meaning the breeder only wanted them placed in pet homes, not for breeding. So when they have puppies they cannot be AKC, so these other registries have popped up so these puppies can have "papers". If you are truly interested in perhaps breeding, you should be looking at AKC dogs over others, as some of the others will register dogs that may not even be full yorkie. |
The AKC wont register mix breeds either and other registries do. |
APRI stands for America's Pet Registry Inc, and was started by commercial breeders, so basically, you are saying "puppy mill registry". Backyard breeders are also buying the dogs because they come with breeding rights. I'm not saying that a dog you get from them won't be adorable; I think all dogs are adorable, but if you are looking to breed in the future, you should only breed dogs that meet standard. Ethical breeders don't automatically give breeding rights, they know only certain dogs should be bred, and they believe you need education before you start breeding. If you are looking to breed in the future, many people think it's best to find a mentor. Quote:

I agree with the above poster -- I would only buy AKC registered yorkies. You can look at the different "looks" and many times make a good guess that they are not AKC. Not only do people try to get around the limited registrations, where experienced breeders have deemed a dog not breeding material, some of these off-shoot registeries can also register dogs with nothing more than a picture and two people saying "yes, they look like yorkies" to them. Many puppymill breeders went to the other registeries when the AKC started implementing rules for DNA testing dogs with multiple breedings per year. They did not want to adhere to the rules, did not want to risk getting caught with sloppy breeding, and did not want to incur the extra cost. So, they went to a registery that had few rules and little guarantee what you are getting is all Yorkie. Another reason not to use those other registeries is that many were started by the same people that were running the puppymills. I would not want to support that effort in any way. Stick with AKC! Breeding is not as simple as saying I might want to do it someday though. You really need to put in a lot of time studying. The breeders forum here on YT is a good source, but buy a few books as well as talking at length with experienced breeders in your area. Really educate yourself on what to look for before you breed. Then once you make the decision, really learn about the whelping process and what to expect. Make sure you are willing to lose your female in the process. I made the mistake of thinking "it wouldn't happen to me." Even with all the book work, all of the reading here online, all of the good intentions, even with the vet's help, we still lost our girl. It can happen. |
Thank you so much for all your help. I came to the same understand about the APRI just wanted to cross my T's and dot my I's. Thanks you so much for all your responses. :):p |
My dog is APRI reg and she came from a puppymill/byb! I LOVE HER TO DEATH and shes amazing, I don't care if she has AKC papers or not I love her the same, but it's better to KNOW what your getting and so far she's cost me a tad bit! |

as a long time breeder ( nearly 50 years with 2 breeds ) i can tell you that anything other than AKC ( AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB ) is not worth more than the paper its written on. |
Food for thought... Quote:
I was wondering though ....if a breeder breeds an AKC girl with a dog of another registery ( or any dog for that matter) and the breeder also owns a AKC boy, if they were a dishonest breeder, cant they just say that the AKC girl bred with the AKC boy? How would AKC know, Im pretty sure that they DO NOT require DNA tessting on ALL litters. I think there is a list on the AKC website that determines when they would have to DNA test puppies. So doesnt that make them just as safe or unsafe as other registries? |
open can of worms Very interesting!!! I guess that would be an honor system of the breeders. I am going to open a can of worms, what make the puppymills any different than those breeder that continue to breed there dogs over and over again. Do they do it for the breed or for the money? |

CKC is just as good as AKC - Of course I am referring to the CANADIAN kennel club. |
open can of worms I do understand that but they both do it for the money! Some breeder do treat there dogs better then puppy mills. My point is now matter how much you try and find out about the place that you are getting you puppy you are trusting that they are what they say they are! You might never know! |

I do agree that AKC is by far the best and pretty much only registry to consider but still not safeproof as far as making sure your getting a purebred pup and its still possible to register dogs who shouldt be there. I guess I dont understand why we hold AKC up over the other registries if this can happen. |
