Bringing home lily at 8 weeks old?
 

the lady im getting her from is not really a breeder she has mom dad and the 2 pups. she also has 3 year child. she says her sister is taking the other pup home at 8 weeks as she is in town and wont be making a trip back 1200 miles. she wants me to bring lily home at 8 weeks .reasons being she will have no other pup to learn or play with and her 3 yr old child is having to be under constant observation so she dont hurt the pups .the mom has became agressive with her 3 yr and the dogs have been kept in a bedroom .she says the mom stopped feeding them this week since teeth came in and will only lay with them short periods. what does everyone think? i know it is too early but i cant tell her she must keep the till 12 weeks i have put it out there though and these were the reasons she said she did not want to wait longer.

My BF's sister got her yorkie 6 years ago from a pet store ( ugh!) and the pup was shipped on a plane to her at 8 weeks. She ddin't have any problems. I know it's not recommended, but it seems you have little choice.

I know most people recommend waiting until 12 weeks, in your case it doesn't sound like there's really an option. It seems a lot of people got their Yorkies young at 8 weeks and they did fine. I got Jackson at 9 weeks old but he was also a bigger Yorkie.

I get so mad a people breeder their pets.. then wanting to get rid of puppies so early.. I think puppies need to be with their momma at least another month.. but not sure if you have a deposit and worry about this puppie getting hurt.. if you take this puppy.. please take it to the vet asap.. and please do not let any other dog near your puppy until all three shots are given.. a baby is too vulnerable to parvo.. be very protective..grrrr sorry.. I just hate seeing this..to me people just try to save money on shots too..

Well, this person really isn't a "breeder" per say. It sounds as if her dog just got pregnant and had puppies so she probably doesn't much knowledge. Common general knowledge is that puppies go to their forever homes at 8 weeks of age because that's what the age is for larger dogs. So I think a lot of people just assume for all dogs.

thanks everyone. looks like i will probably be bringing her home at 8 wks. i will take the advice and get her to a vet asap and keep her from other dogs. i just worry about the hypoglycemia and stuff its my first yorkie .i had a poodle for 20 years until she passed last summer. it was a devastating loss. i still cry.

There are many people here that will help you out.. do you know how much the baby weighs at 8 weeks...if not keep a record.. you can get a scale at walmart pretty cheap.. and for yourself to know.. you can weigh her on a regular basis and make sure baby is keeping weight on and gaining some..good luck and please post a picture for us.. on this thread hopfully so I do not miss out on seeing this wee darling... hugs and good luck... anne

I'm a little concerned about this Parvo..When you bring a puppy home what do you do to prevent it, just keep them from other dogs?..and until what age? Thanks, I have so much to learn before getting my puppy.

Don't expose your puppy to other dogs or to the ground. Don't take your puppy on walks unless you are the only one walking. I think I remember you are going to use pads so you don't have to worry about your yard, even if its fenced some animals can get in and use it for their bathroom. Beyond that I think you should be OK.

To the OP, I brought my first puppy home at 7 wks and 1 lb. I was with her all the time, retired, and was very careful with her and she did great healthwise. She does have some behavioral problems directly related to leaving Mom and littermates too early but I'm working on it.

In Canada shots are given at 8 wks, 12 wks and 16 weeks generally.. minimum of three weeks apart.. no sooner and not a whole lot longer then the 4 weeks.. IMO.. and what I do..they need three sets of shots.. I do not allow my puppies on strange ground what so ever... you do not ever want to deal with parvo.. you may sound paranoid but you can google parvo and read about it also..I allow puppies in my back yard.. it is fenced in.. but that is it.. for no other dog is in my yard..
I did however a few years back buy a 6 months old and was assured puppie had all shots.. from a cnd show breeder... puppie got parvo two months later.. and I would never deny shots.. would have had breeder been honest with me.. she got parvo and I acted immediately drove three hours to a vet I trusted with her.. she stayed one week.. but she survived and I thought soley due to my getting it on the first sign she showed.. It is very serious..
I had two yorkies in a stroller and one in a pouch at the flea market here on saturday..a woman just bought a teenie dog.. and my god it was so teenie and young looking.. she brings it right over to my dogs.. and I say sorry.. please do not put that puppy to my dogs.. I know it has not had any shots.. she has just bought it next booth to where I was looking at doggie stuff.. I said it nicely.. but did not trust people selling teenie young babies at a flea market.. to be close to my furkids... anne

You are so right.. a baby at 8 weeks old is just learning from mom how to behave and how to play an interact..I worry about that part..it is just too totally amazing watching a momma with babies from 8-12 weeks..and ya know she worries about the mommie.. well she needs to think about the momma losing those babies too young also.. she might not be ready.. anne

I got my Bella last Sunday at 8wks, now she's 9wks old, and I also was worried about the whole Hypoglycemia issue. So far my experience with her has been great! I still bought the NutriCal just incase she became hypoglycemic. She's so active and when she's not she's taking naps. I think all pups are different, just take really good care of her and always keep her in your sight. YT is such a wonderful place to come and ask questions. They've helped me so much!:D Welcome!

Okay, Just to get this straight in my head..I can't take my puppy around other dogs until 16 weeks of age after she has had her third set of shots..is that correct? My bf has 2 dogs and I was going to take the pup to visit, should I not do that?? Thanks for any advice!

WEll, to be honest, my baby was brought home just going on 9 weeks old. Not much of a huge difference . she did well. However, she does suckle on my clothes still. I am home all the time with her too, and believe that this has helped her enormously. These little ones are very needy and are like human babies. Be prepared to spend a lot of time with your new arrival, Make certain the baby is eating often, and bonding well to you. Taking the pup to the vet is very important. Because a lot of times puppies need to be dewormed and will need to start on vaccinations, be weighed and have a health exam. Definately keep your new puppy away from other animals and parks, outside, until he/she has had all the vaccines. As for potty training I would start with pad training. and with feeding, use a high grade, super pre. Quality food, and free feed, with fresh water. Provide lots of small toys that fit in her mouth. A healthy puppy will want to play. You will also want some safe chew toys, and start out will small bully sticks.

I got my babies at 8 weeks. they both did fine, they were both 1 lb and I gave a little nutri-cal 2x a day, I do not let my puppies out side not even in my yard untill all shots are giving. ( too many stray cats and wild animals running around here )
when we got Candy she was 13 weeks old and she never had any shots. we had to train her on peepads and used a small kennel to give her short 10-15 min breaks out side to potty train her. she for some reason had 4 sets of shots at 3 weeks apart , so it seemed like for ever before we could let her run free in the yard and play. its so nice when you know they have had that last set of shots.
