It sounds like you're set on this pup but honestly, if this person wants to get rid of the pups and get this over with already, I really doubt that any pre breed testing was done (blood panel, urinalysis, bile acids test, thyroid panel, hips and knees checked, ears and eyes checked, etc.). That is one of my major concerns about bringing home a Yorkie that is so young. If they are willing to go against what seems to be best for the dogs and let them go this early, they probably are doing (or not doing) some other things too that could (or is more like to) mean larger vet bills for you later.

The lady has the dam and sire and a litter of puppies...she IS a breeder in every way.
You seem to realize that 8 weeks is not an appropriate age to bring the pup home....so why is it up for debate. IMO, none of the reasons you have listed would justify the dog being placed at 8 weeks. IMO, it seems like you are really set on this pup and trying (maybe subconciously) to find a reason to justify the breeder releasing the pup to early and your willingness to accept that. Just my .02...the choice is yours to make in the end.

(Also, I think that ellie may brought up some very good points to consider as well.)

Can I just say that in the UK none of that testing is required, it is not even KC recommended (lots of other breeds have testing requirements and recommendations, but Yorkies arent even on the list).

Also, 8 weeks is the norm in the UK for getting Yorkies.

From my understanding, the UK doesn't have as much of an issue with Yorkies being overbred. Here in the US, there are BYBs at every corner breeding these poor little ones with no regard to the health issues that require the aforementioned health tests.

Sadly, in the area of the country where I live, 8 weeks or usually even younger is the "norm" release date too. However, that doesn't mean it's what's best.

last time she was weighed i did it at the ladys home on her scale she was 4weeks and 11.5 oz. i will post some pics when i bring her home it will be around 6 20 09 also can you tell me how to post pics on a thread ?i guess its with a attachment but have no idea how.t.y muchly

yes i am set on this pup .i was there for the birth been waiting for her to deliver. i have been visiting her all along so she learns my voice and touch. i appreciate your opinion but the problem i really have is if i dont take her she will have to find a home that will she stated as she just cant keep the pups any longer she stated her male was supposed to have been fixed she had taken the male from a friend who was in hospice very ill and this is not working with her 3 yr old and the mother is not very good with the pups she was really to old to have them vet said. all this after talking with her today as i again tried to convince her pups shpuld stay with the mom longer.

I got Maddie at 8 weeks and have had no problems except she was a picky eater and needed coaxing. Best wishes to you and congrats on your new baby!

Missy was 7 weeks and 3 days old when I got her. She only weighed 1 lb. She did great behaviour-wise. She has really been the most perfectly behaved little dog (now 9 months). What we did struggle with for her first month home was hypoglycemia. Her blood sugar levels often crashed in those first few weeks, and it was scarey. I always had a tube of Nutrical on hand and kept food available to her 24/7. I had to give Missy Nutrical 2-3 times per day for the first while that she was home. As she matured, I was gradually able to wean her off of it.

Good luck with your little one just keep a close watch on her and keep her nice & warm that is very nessacery and she will be fine i free feed no matter what age they eat very small amounts at a time and a little goat milk the first week or two helps with little ones

I understand your predicament completely. That's a tough situation to be in. Sounds like she is being faced with some difficulties with the litter/3 yr old/etc that she should have been prepared and willing to deal with from the beginning. You have a responsibility as a breeder to see things through in the best interest of the puppies, not just place them quickly because things got tough. Of course, that doesn't exactly help you out in the situation. In any event, it sounds like you've pretty much got your mind made up. You've gotten some good advice already. My biggest concern would be to watch her for signs of hypoglycemia AND ensuring that at such a young age, the breeder has had time to have the proper health screenings done.
