Yorkies in apartments How many of you live in an apartment with your yorkie? I am looking at buying a condo on the top (3rd) floor of a building. I am renting a house right now and love having my yard to play around with Layla in, but I feel the need to buy something instead of putting my money in someone else's pocket! I can't afford a house right now, but I can afford a condo. My mom keeps telling me I will hate not having a yard, but I think it will be okay. It's winter half the year anyway and we don't use the yard at all then! And this place is 910 sq ft... at least she'd have room to run around inside, plus a pretty big deck. As it is now, she has a pee pad on our front deck when she needs to go outside, so it wouldn't be a big transition. I just want to hear people say that their yorkies are doing great without a yard to run around in! I would miss it, but I'm really getting tired of renting especially when rent is so high it's almost more affordable to pay a mortgage! |
I have a townhouse, not a apartment but still not back yard. I have a small front yard but I dont use it to much. Id rather go to the dog parks its more fun and I get to meet nice people.. it doesnt really affect me to much, I like to take her for walks too:D |
Two years ago I bought a condo and I too was renting a house that had a big yard. Laya made the transition just fine. She runs around like crazy inside, I walk her outside, and she has always used a potty pad anyway. She will go outside also but prefers her pad. She doesn't seem to miss it at all. It worked well for us. I hope it will for you too. I know what you mean about putting money in someone else's pocket!!! |
1 Attachment(s) Have you thought about putting an indoor pet loo on the deck to give her a sense of having a yard? I found some on the internet. Good luck!:p |
My girls do fine in an apartment, and they have plenty of room to run around. When at home, they use the pad. They also get out a lot for doggie daycare and walks and will go outdoors in both of these cases. |
I live in a 2 bedroom and so far good... |
I live in a 2 bedroom Apt .It's on the second floor and we have a balcony. Suzi does just fine here! She is pad trained too .No problems. Around the complex there is all grass and sidewalks . We go for walks/runs when the weather is nice. Suzi will potty outside , no problems . She goes on the balcony with me too. But, won't ever go down the stairs. That is a great plus for me! I carry her down the stairs . She likes to look out the window , and protects us from all the cars, people, and noises ! Suzi sometimes gets the yorkie crazies inside and runs around . She wears herself out .The nice thing about having a little dog! Nobody has ever complained at all about her , and she is a very good girl. She barks too, but, nothing too annoying. :aimeeyork |
I live in a condo on the third floor as well. Maddy is potty trained indoors and outdoors. She know how to use a puppy pad, and goes pee and poo outside when we take out our bigger dog. She is fine not being out in a yard. She runs around our condo like mad and has plenty of room to run and play. She will do just fine in a condo, I'm sure :) |
Thanks so much for all the comments! Layla does pretty well on her pee pads, although she's still not 100% trained at 3 and a half years old! I think it would be much harder if she was already outside-only trained. I think I am going to start looking more seriously into this condo. It's one of the few in my city that actually allows pets :animal36 |

Looking to get a Yorkie....I'm in an APARTMENT. Hi - I'm looking for a Yorkie, or a Morkie, and live in a 2-floor duplex apartment. I chose to consider the Yorkie or Morkie because of their size. But what about "Barking"? Can anyone talk to me about Yorkies barking. I also have a cat. Not to concerned about that initially because the Yorkie will be young and crated initially. I'm more concerned about the temperament of Yorkies and their "barking". Thanks. |

IMO, The Poodles and Poms , are more yappier then the Yorkie's . However that is just what I have observed. Toy breeds do tend to like to bark more , in general. however, The yorkie is perfect for apartment living. |
I live in a 3 bedroom apt. and my lil baby does just fine he runs around the entire apt. with no problem... so don't worry ..your baby will do just fine too.:animal36;) |
I live in an apartment and Meg is just fine. She has plenty of room to run around and we take walks outside. She has two pee pads: one in the laundry room (ideal) and one in the dining room (not ideal!). We had to use two pads becuase little miss picky has to "choose" where she goes to the bathroom. Anyway, the only issue that we've had with apartment living is people walking by the hallway outside. Meg hears everything and has become quite a little barker this past month. What is all comes down to is money. If you think a condo will be a more responsible way to spend your money, then go for it, and your dog will adjust. :) |

I live in a large 2 bedroom apt on the 3rd floor, and I am getting a Yorkie. I can't see a problem with it :) |
