is she a 'teacup'?

ok. so i know that there is no such a thing as a 'teacup category' for yorkies. all yorkies are 'toy' dogs. and 'teacup' is an incorrect category.

BUT

the rest of the world doesn't seem to know that. (the rest of the world = most people you meet outside of this community) ;)

people very often ask me if milu is a teacup. so i would start my normal routine of explaining to them that there is no such thing. and i would also try to tell them that both her parents were normal size yorkies (5 lbs) and if they show interest in small size yorkies, i would explain to them that it's not a good idea to look for a "tiny" yorkie, because they can have health problems if ...blah blah blah... i try my best to tell them what i think they should know about yorkies.

they usually look at me like "wow, that's way too much information." and then proceed to say something along the lines of "so she is a teacup?"

a lot of people really firmly believe that teacup is a different type of yorkie and i think i am jut wasting my time when i try to tell them otherwise.

Ellie May 05-15-2009 10:37 AM

Pretty much it's a waste of time to tell them that there is no such thing as a teacup or to tell someone that they need to do xyz for their animal for it to be healthy or to tell people not to breed, etc., etc., etc. I try to be quiet unless I'm asked because it is a waste of breath but there are times that I try to educate. I doesn't work very often.

nanahas3 05-15-2009 10:47 AM

We go through the same thing with Laddy. For so long he was 2lbs and oz's last time at vet he finally had made it to 3lbs:rolleyes: so I was thinking yeah he is and average yorkie now. We had just left the vet when someone asked if he was a teacup. I just looked at them and said no he is just a tiny:lol tearsI like you used to explain and educate but now I put it in same class as people calling him a girl and just let them talk lol.

My breeder went one better and charged me an extra £100 after I got there ,saying its because Tia is a tea cup yorkie ,how naive I was then lol

AprilLove 05-15-2009 10:49 AM

:D

I think we should all carry a real teacup in our purses/bags when we go out with our babies, then when that question gets asked, pull out the teacup try to put your baby in it then tell them no, not a teacup!!!!!

i think you are right. :D i thought about making a little flyer to hand out to people when they ask about the teacup question. lol :D but that just seems a bit silly and overboard. :p plus people will probably be annoyed that i say there is no such thing. people really like to think there is a teacup category. i guess categorizing things makes people feel good.

chachi 05-15-2009 10:52 AM

So many people call the little ones teacups that I think there is no way around it. I used to try to educate people on it but I dont anymore

that is a cute one.. people will never get it.. and I gave up years ago trying to educate some people.. for I get it with kacee.. he is a pet only to me.. his parents were both 9 pounds and I bought him cause I fell in love and he was the runt.. so at the time I figured he would be a normal weight, since the parents were so big..he is 3.8 pounds and people just look at me when I tell them his parents size..
I was not looking for a yorkie when we got him.. I say he came from heaven.. for months later the vet killed my pooh and to me it was like I needed kacee to get me through it and some one was looking after me at the time..anne

Izzy Princess 05-15-2009 10:58 AM

Sigh...me too.:( Izzy will be 2-1/2 in June and she is just now getting to 3#. For the longest time she was between 2.3 and 2.9. To this day I continue to be asked is she a teacup. I, too, go through all the explanation and then I see that look on their face like "what????". So I just say no - she is normal since the breed standard is from 3-8 and she's just on the small side. That stops them most times.

Hmmmm...I don't know. I believe I saw a pic of bchgrl "Frazier" in a teacup on this site the other day. Somehow though, I suspect she wouldn't be able to fit the teacup in her purse! :) Perhaps she'll catch this thread and post it again...it's really cute!
In all seriousness, I really think this is a honest mistake on the non Yorkie owners and (truth be told) new Yorkie owners like myself. Now that I own one and have found YT, I know a lot more than I did when I bought Sophie 5 months ago. (And I thought I had done my research!).

QuickSilver 05-15-2009 11:09 AM

I just say, "he's on the small side". I too want to go into a schpiel, but I know most people don't have time for it. If they stick around long enough, I'll say the breed standard is under 7 lbs, and that personally I'd prefer it if Thor were a little bigger because I have to watch out for him constantly. If they're still around after THAT, I will tell them everything that is great about Thor until they give up and leave. :D

LOL! i have seen that picture too. so funny! :D
i don't know, maybe her purse IS BIG enough to fit that teacup in there!

i thought 'teacup' was a diff. category as well when i was first looking for a dog. but that's because that's what i was told. (my friend had a small dog and he told me it was a 'teacup' dog, i never owned a dog before and didn't know that much about dogs) and once i learned that it's all a marketing ploy i felt that i should let others know that it's not really a category, but it is really hard. a lot of people firmly believe that it is a different category.

Britster 05-15-2009 12:27 PM

Basically everyone I've come across has said the same stuff to me... not because Jackson is small, but because he's big. "Oh wow, he's not a teacup then, right?" I tried to explain it to one person but they just looked at me like "I really don't care" so I just ignore and nod my head from now on. "Nope, he's not a teacup.." *walks away and rolls eyes*

roxies_mom 05-15-2009 01:17 PM

There was a time when I didn't know the difference either. It was before I even thought about having a yorkie so I really didn't even care about being educated. I only really learned it after coming onto this site. I catch myself wanting to correct people too and have some but now I just bite my tongue and don't always feel like getting into a big conversation over it. I just want to do what I'm out doing and mind my own business lol! I know it's probably better to try to educate others but it's amazing how many of us that just never knew. Maybe someday a journalist or someone will do a story that reaches alot of people explaining how not to get ripped off from the ones that try to sell them as "teacups".

heatherm0890 05-15-2009 01:45 PM

i didnt know either until doing a little bit of research...i always wanted a "teacup yorkshire terrier" haha...bailee is only 4 pounds so i get it all the time"is she a teacup???" i usually jst say no,her parents were just small...then i usually get an odd look but whatever..

Nancy1999 05-15-2009 02:54 PM

I don't mind when layman use the word "teacup", it's just a nickname for a small dog. Some people think an 8-pounder is a teacup, and it has no real meaning. I just don't like it when a breeder uses the word, and that's an excellent indication you should buy elsewhere. I guess I find the word terribly old fashioned. I prefer "tiny" and I guess this would be anything under average, but who really knows what "average" is? Most breeders don't breed to standard, so saying 4-7 is average really doesn't seem true either. So when they ask you if she's a teacup, you could always say, she's standard, just on the small side. If the person asking you is over 40, just say "yes". :D

suzeb29 05-15-2009 04:46 PM

I've only had my puppy about 5 weeks and I couldn't even count the number of times I've heard the word tea-cup. It is so annoying to me and as much as you try to educate people it's usually to no avail. And what is with the look of disappointment on their faces when you say "no he's just a baby"? Like he's not cute anymore because I told you tea-cups don't exist? I think it's sad that the word tea-cup has become so widely accepted when in actuality it is just a word irresponsible breeders use to sell smaller/more frail dogs at an exorbitant price. And sometimes, they wind up not being "tea-cup" sized in the end anyway!

CotonMom 05-15-2009 05:07 PM

Huh, well I just learned something. I've been thinking my 3 lb yorkie was a teacup!

I bought her when I was living in Taiwan and as the breeder didn't speak English and communication was limited I figured I'd misunderstood about the size of her parents. So is it possible her mother really was 7 lbs? That's what I understood the breeder to say at the time.

I was hoping for a larger yorkie as I was getting her as a companion to my 13 lb coton but as it turns out yorkies pack a lot of dog into a small package. I'm not sure my coton could have handled a bigger yorkie.

AmyChristine 05-15-2009 05:24 PM

This is kinda funny, for the longest time I was set on explaining to people the there IS NO TEACUP haha and hubby would look at people after they asked the dredded question like oh no now your gonna hear it:rolleyes: Now I just say,"no, she is a yorkie" I have learned that it keeps me out of alot of debates and people who want more info will ask, and then I can further educate.

LilMissy 05-15-2009 05:33 PM

I get asked this at least once a day. My new response is, "What's that"? :p

tjdmom 05-15-2009 05:33 PM

I know what you mean! I've even ran into someone with a bigger yorkie and he saw my Zoe who's 5.5lbs and he even asked if she's a teacup. I usually go into the explanation that there is no teacup and yorkies are supposed to be 4-7 lbs but I know what you mean, their eyes glaze over and they don't even hear you half the time!

AmyChristine 05-15-2009 05:39 PM

oops I double posted;)

LOL! i know what you are talking about! i would spend all this time explaining to them, but since it's not the info they wanted. they would just ignore what i said and look at me like i am crazy.

if i said that, they will probably look at me like i am from another planet. they will probably think "who doesn't know what a teacup is!?"

and then THEY will probably explain to me what a teacup is, at which point my eyes will probably just glaze over...
