First Dog, First Yorkie, First Headache.

Hey guys, my name is Elvis and I'm 19 years old and i recently bought my first yorkie about 4 -5 days ago, i got him when he was about 7 weeks. He is the cutest thing every, he mostly sleeps, and i know i got him off to the wrong start. And its my fault. When i got him he didnt have his teeth really, just the front poking through so i couldnt feed him the puppy food i got him, so i just gave him warm milk for the first 2 days. the only thing that seemed to work, then i bought those little cesar things and he likes those and he will eat them but he still cant chew the puppy food. And he poops and pees SO randomly. I read everything therre was to know about potty training and stuff, but i got him so young and i didnt know how to begin with him, couldnt use treats as rewards or anything. He sleeps in a little area under the stairs blocked off with a doggy gate. he has everything he needs in their including pee pads. At first he would go on the pee pads fine, but i guess he now preferes the carpet. This little guy is a devil. Im sure of it. Today i was so fedup with him peeing on the carpet or hardwood that i stayed with him on his puppy pad for about 40 minutes right after he woke up. i finally realized he didnt have to pee or poo so i just swooped him up, took him upstairs with me, put him down for 1 second and BAM. PEE on the hardwood. this seems to happen everytime i try to teach him to pee. Its hard to take himoutside to train him becuase the weather isnt the best and he gets cold. Im having a really hard time training him, maybe i taught him to pee when im not around. Poeple told me to pick hiim up with i see him about to pee and put him where he is suppose to go... well this doesnt work, i put him there and he just looks at my like **** you, i want the carpet. and ill wait... wait... 10...15...20...minutes, and nothing, so i take him out. and BAM. on the carpet.

he doesnt drink water either, so i dont know where all this pee is comming from. he hasnt drank water since he got here, its so wierd... its freaking me out. Everytime i think he doesnt need to pee he pees on the carpet. Or on the REALLY expensive rugs. how do i teach him proper behaviour without loosing my mind and scaring him. Im getting really frustrated and i want to keep him but my parents are just gonna throw him out if this continues...

I would also like to add that becuase of his behaviour i cannot trust him now and it forces me to leave him in his area more and more and more. I dont want to constantly watch my dog to see if its going to ruin my carpet, thats not why i got him.

He may not want to use the puppy pad because you have it in his sleeping area? I'm not sure. I know my puppy doesn't like me to watch her. I put her puppy pad in the small bathroom and close the door as soon as she wakes up. I go back 5 minutes later and she has done her business. I praise her and give her a treat.

Another thing is to "prime" the pee pad with a little bit of his pee, so he knows that's where to go. I rub a small amount of urine in the middle of the new, clean pad just before I throw away the old, dirty one.

I'm located in Calgary, too and I'm the mom to 4 yorkies. Let me know if you need any help. I can also sew and would be more than willing to make you some belly bands to help out.

Michele :-)

Hello & welcome to Yorkie Talk!

Training a brand new puppy can be very frustrating. It takes a lot of consistency & patience. You can't expect a puppy to be trained overnight, it takes time. It took me almost 6 weeks to get Daisy totally potty trained to puppy pads and I've read from some on here that it has taken a lot longer than that! You are doing the right thing by taking him to his pad every time he starts to use the bathroom. Every time Daisy would use to start to have an accident, I would pick her up and take her and put her on her pad and tell her to "potty here." Now, if she does have an accident (which is very very seldom), I tell her bad girl and that she needs to go potty where she is supposed to and she will go right to her pad. If he does potty on his pad, be sure to praise him & give him a treat. I also found it easier for me to train Daisy b/c I put her in a doggie play pen while I was gone. This only gave her room for her bed & her puppy pad. I think this helped a lot her knowing to go on her pads b/c most 100% of dogs will not use the bathroom in their bed or crate. A lot of other yorkie talkers crate train and I've heard that is very helpful as well. Please don't give up! It really does take time and they are so much fun!!! He is probably just trying to figure out everything and it takes them a lot of time to adjust to the new surroundings as well! Good Luck!!:)

Welcome to YT. Patience is the key. Like you already know, 7 weeks is awfully young to expect him to know what to do. You need to watch like a hawk and when you see the signs of him needing to pee or poop, pick him up immediately and place him on a pad. There are pads and sprays that will attract them to them.

I had several pads around just in case I needed to scoop mine up and place them on the pad. Once they learn where the pads are though, you will need to move them ever so slowly to get rid of them. Twice now Maggie still thinks that there is one by the laundry room door and it's been gone for about 2 months-but it was my fault, I hadn't replaced the one in their pen yet.

I also wouldn't take him out just yet as he probably hasn't had all his shots yet. I wouldn't chance him picking something up.

As far as food, you will need to switch him slowly as to not upset his tummy. You can wet dry food down and mush it up or water down some can food also. Definitely think about a good quality food.

You should always have water available for him no matter what, as you know he could dehyrate very quickly. What is his name? Would love to see pictures. He sounds like he's going to be a little spunky one. :) Good luck with everything.

Yea, after reading here about how somepoeple say their yorkies dont like their pee pad to close to their sleeping area, i put one in the bathroom aswell. Ill try priming the pee pads, that sounds like a good idea.

You said you closed the door and then the puppy did the business, well im afraid to close the door. he will probably miss, today i sat down with him and i kept putting him back on the pad repeatedly saying go pee and eventually he just layed down and tried to sleep.

everytime he has peed in the right spot i have praised him lavishly, however, this is so rare, most of the time its NOOOO!!!!

Gee I just do not know what to say to you.. first off puppies at this age should be with their momma.. and being with siblings.. in an x pen large enough for toys, water.. a food bowl and pp pads.. when you cannot be with them.. I would not allow a baby this young to have run of any larger room.. for the puppies safety..
Also go out and get puppy milk replacer.. ground up your puppy for and put some milk over it.. no more ceaser.. for you will never get him to eat kibble which is good for their teeth..
I am also a Canadian and from Ontario..I just cannot believe these breeders that let such a young puppie leave their house other then they are not spending money on shots..
If you need any help, please send me a message and I will help as much as I can.. but please do not expect a puppy at this age to train that easily..good luck.. please do not take your puppy outside in the spring.. and expose puppy to parvo... not on the ground at all.. not until baby has had the third parvo shot from a vet.. then you need to wait two weeks.. a baby is so vulnerable to parvo..
Have you taken the puppy to the vet.. I think you need to asap.. make sure puppie has a clear stool sample..

What is a belly band? I bought him a couple of sweaters and shirts and a jacket and he is so cute.

PS. His name is MIKI (like Mickey Mouse)

rtsmichele 05-14-2009 09:54 AM

A belly band is kind of like a diaper. It wraps around his middle and covers his penis, so he won't be able to pee on the floor. It might be your best bet with a puppy this young. Or you can have a full diaper made so he can't poop on the floor either.

mypreciouspups 05-14-2009 09:55 AM

A belly band is cotton or flannel material made into a band with velcro that sellers here make.. and you put these on so they soon learn they do not like being wet.. and it helped me train a male yorkie that was not trained at 8 months old.. hope this helps.. i am not sure who the sellers are that make these.. fufufashion (Linda) makes these I know.. anne

LDandPasquale 05-14-2009 09:55 AM

Lets put it this way..your mom didnt prop you up on the toilet and say Go Pee as soon as you were born...it took time...and so will this. Just be consistent..your baby WILL eventually learn (even though it may seem like forever). Pasquale wasnt FULLY potty trained til he was a good 6 months. Your baby is still young. Ceasar food isnt a great food, but it does contain water in it...thats probably where he's getting his water. I would read the YT forum like a bible cause if you really look at the training tips provided to you on here....you'll have lots of success and learn to just enjoy your baby! Good luck!

 Totally agree. Give the little guy a break , he should be with his mummy . Why did the breeder let him go so early?

rtsmichele 05-14-2009 10:06 AM

Elvis,

I have sons that are just about your age. Do you by any chance know Tyson or Justin Solinger?

I'd be really happy to have your puppy come over and meet my herd. I have a 3 pound 7 month old girl named Abbi, a 2 1/2 year old boy named Oliver who is close to 10 pounds, an almost 3 year old boy named Cooper who weighs about 6.5 pounds and a giant 9 year old girl named Tia who is 19 pounds.

How big is Miki and where did you get him?

By the way - my vet just moved their offices to Dalhousie station. I've been going to them for just under 10 years with my yorkies and they are wonderful. My mom flew her 2 1/2 pound yorkie from Victoria to have her spayed at my vet's because I trust them so much.

Michele :-)
