| Why are yorkies different? Hi all, a thread I was just reading had me thinking about male dogs and marking indoors. Is this just a yorkie (or maybe small dog) issue? I've had male large breed dogs (labs) and have known many others who have had them and never ever remember anyone saying anything about their male dog marking in the home, or anyone else's. Once they are trained to go outside, thats where they do all their business marking included. And if it is a small dog issue, why would it be only small dogs?

| I know, thats what I mean by outside. Sorry if I wasn't clear, I just hear about yorkies marking and needing to wear belly bands and have never heard of it being an issue with large breeds. Didn't know if I just don't hear about it or if it is a yorkie/toy dog issue mostly

| I don't think it's just a Yorkie thing, I really think if a dog is marking in the house, he is not well trained. My opinion only...

| I think part of it is that a lot of small dogs aren't actually trained to go only outside. Many people on here use pads only, and many more train their dogs to go outside but then allow them to use pads as well. This teaches the dogs that it's OK to go inside and some take that to mean wherever they please. Loki was neutered when he was 6 months old, doesn't lift (well he tries at the mailbox, it's pretty funny) and goes outside only. He does mark outside (we stop in every yard to pee....) We don't have any issues with him marking in the house. A rare accident would be in front of the door if we didn't let him out in time. I also think that people allow it because the messes are small. Could you imagine trying to belly band a big dog? It takes longer to house train small dogs so people give up and give in. I know Terriers are strong willed, but there are a lot of different sized Terriers and we all know Yorkies are special but not so special that I allow them to pee in my house |

| I've had male dogs of all breeds and never had a problem with them marking and that includes Tobie, my Yorkie. I think it just depends on the dog not the breed.

This makes a lot of sense to me the way you explained it. I've never had a small breed male dog, however my yorkie girl is not so great about pee'ing in the house. I know it is because I have her pee pad trained, whats the difference between a pee pad and a carpet in her opinion. I've really wanted to retrain her and have her go outside, I honestly just don't have the will to do it right now though, guess i'm lazy. lol I'm lmbo thinking about a big ole Sheppard or lab in a belly band, maybe i'll take a picture of one of my lab girls wearing one. Do you think they make them that big lol

Thor's Human Donating Member | I'm not sure why it is, but I think part of the problem is that they are so small and fast. I've posted before that Thor can squirt out a pee in under half a second. He does it all the time in the park while he's walking around. His back legs go out a little wider than usual for one stide and he's done. Literally, if you blink, you will miss it. I went for a period of time thinking that Thor was house trained when he was not (actually, this appears to be a continuing pattern, but he is much, much better). So I think sometimes people may miss accidents and think they are 100% consistent, while their yorkie still thinks it's okay to pee inside once in a while. Just a theory!
