What Do You Do With Your Babies When On Vacation?
 

This will be the first time that I am facing this situation . . .we are planning a 2 night/3 day trip in November with our kids (20 & 16) and I'm at a loss of what to do with my babies . . .Usually just DH have been going away leaving our daughter in charge of sitting . . .I don't have an issue leaving them with my mom, although my husband feels uncomfortable with this idea . . .my mom is 79 and she's not senile or anything, just a bit off . . .(to put it mildly) my husband feels insecure leaving our babies with them . . .most of the boarding facilities around me require that they be spayed and/or neutered . . .and I'm not comfortable with them being around the "bigger" dogs . . .our vet has a boarding facility, but my babies have never been in crates and/or cages . . .

What does everyone do? I don't think I could leave my babies home for 2 nights with just someone (a neighbor) coming in to check on them . . .it's not like they are cats who can live idependently . . .ugggggh I'm at a loss here . . .:confused:

Ellie goes with us or I have family watch her or we just don't go.
I am just too nervous about her being boarded and either they wouldn't follow my instructions or she would bite and get quarantined.

I know what you mean . . .I would not feel right boarding them . . .not at all . . .I just don't understand why my husband feels uncomfortable with my parents watching them . . .

I just returned from a trip and my babies had gone along. The place we went to was pet friendly and the doggies had a great time. It was a long trip in the car (6 hours to get there), but they were fine. It took a little effort and coordination, but we enjoyed it.

Hehe, I had a whole extra bag for all their goodies. We had a lot of fun!

Were getting ready to go campin and all 7 will be going with us.

If my baby can't go, I don't go. I have no one to leave her with that I can trust and I will not board her.

Ours go with us....or when they can't...I paid BIG bucks for someone to come stay with them. I don't mean show up a few times a day...I mean stay literally and I still hate it. I much prefer the other vacations.

Same here, if she can't go, I don't go. I just don't trust leaving her with anyone. She has never been boarded, I have no idea how she would react! I know it sounds silly, but i plan my vacations around her. I find dog friendly venues and that's where we go.:p

....That worries about boarding the little ones. I have 2 now(soon to be 3) and it is a real concern. Lots of people don't have a fenced secure yard, and not everyone wants to take on 2 little dogs. My new vet does boarding, reasonable price, and what better place than the vets? I have left them with family members in the past and most recently a good friend. Boarded them one time at a kennel that has special interest in little dogs---the owners have little dogs. It gets expensive. I have never flown with them tho I have been on flights where other people had little dogs with them.

Good you have family you can leave them with. I wish I had family closer. I have never flown with her, we usually just drive. But I know people who have flown with their little dogs, no problem.

My parents have found a person who watches dogs inside that person's home. he did some research, got references, went to check out their house and finaly decided on someone he trusted. I think he paid like 16 per day. he called them daily and the woman was really nice.

I have a very very best friend that also has 3 yorkies, and she lives like 4 house down from us, so she helps me when we go out of town and then I do the same for her. I have so many so she just comes here and check on them and lets them go potty about 4 times a day. But I have had puppies and when that happen the puppies and the mom does go back to her house and stays. It works out great for us. It is so good having close friends you can count on.

Maybe one of your 20 year olds friends can watch them at your house, or see if someone at your Vet or Groomers offers pet sitting in either their or your home.

We always take ours with us. I worry too much about leaving them with someone. Like they might get out and run away or another dog might jump them, so many things can happen.

We usually go to Gatlinburg for Christmas and stay in a cabin. This will be the first time our 3 yorkies go with us since we just got them this year. This will be so exciting. Maybe they won't chew up all the wood in the cabin;)

They always come with me .

We had a rather lengthy trip planned before we got our Yorkie. It's one of those "leaf" trips through New England and we've wanted to do this for years but had to wait until retirement.

We have made plans to drive the 6+ hours back to our breeder's kennel for her to stay with them while we are gone. We are also having her spayed during the time she is there since our breeder has so much more experience tending Yorkies than us.

When we return from the trip and rest enough to make the drive again, we'll go get her. We have boarding facilities in our area but this option made sense to us and Taffy will have a couple of weeks to spend with her doggie mother and sister as well as visit with her first humans.

It works for us because we are retired and don't have the time crunch of returning to work. Who knows? Since we'll be going to the mountains, we might just have to rent a pet friendly cabin and extend the vacation with our Yorkie! There really are some nice perks to being retired. (Of course, if the cost of gas skyrockets again, we won't be thinking "perks" at all.)

Whenever we go on vacation the "kids" go to stay with their breeders and I think our breeders look forward to it as much as the dogs do! I dont trust them with anyone else.

If you cant leave them with your breeders are there any pet hotels in the area? Out here we have a facility called Wag Hotels which looks like doggy-topia and is nothing like a boarding kennel. If I didnt have my breeders to turn to I would most likely use a facility like this. :)

Tia will be going into kennels in August for a week. Did that sound convincing? No really she is (maybe). Well I promised DH that if he got me a yorkie It wouldn't change our lifes.What a big mistake that was as most of you already know.Well I got our 2 week vacation down to one and now waying up wether she would be safer in a kennel or with our 2 teenage boys. So you can see my dilemma.I think kennel. My other dog stayed there before and things were fine but yorkies arnt really dogs they are our babies lol.
Anyway she had the dreaded kennel cough vaccine yesterday so that was the first step towards keeping my promise.:(

we either book somewhere we can take our 3 babies or beg my mom to take our boy and our neighbor takes the 2 girls ..

the thought of kenneling them just scares me, our dogs are very independent have full run of the whole house the thought of them being in a small concrete kennel scares me..they like beds and sofas to much :rolleyes:

When we go on vacation we usually just take them with us just like we took our children with us when they were young and at home. There has been an occasion that it was not possible to take them, however we have had the same groomer since Prissy was a puppy, she is seven now, and she takes them home with her. She is fantastic! We like everyone here are very picky with who we will leave our babies with.

I would like to see the pics when you return from camping. I just bought my 2 yorkies their own camping chairs. Last summer they laid in the dirt. uggh. So this year they have their own child size chairs. Jasper is a frog and Matsis is a monkey chair.:animal-pa

Tiki goes or we don't go, simple as that, if both of us are going. She stays with my gal friend who has her brother if it is only for a while. We trade babysitting. I have hers right now.
When I went to Hawaii in the fall, her Dad stayed home. This was a girls trip and he didn't want to go anyway.

When we go together, we stay in pet friendly places. La Quinta Inn and Suites is excellent! Plus they give you and absolutely wonderful continental breakfast!

The first time we went of vacation Nolee was a puppy and he came with us! We stayed in a pet friendly house. The next year he stayed with my daughter. This year, we are probably taking him with us again. We already have the pet friendly house rented. I do however board him if we are only gone for 1 or 2 nites. I found a great place and someone I can trust that does boarding. She has an outdoor house, one big room. The room is divided by chain link fences into individual cages about 6'X6'. Nolee loves her and I feel he is safe there. I also have a friend that does house sitting and will come stay with him at my house. Maybe go and visit some boarding places. I still feel best taking Nolee with us!! I miss him when he is not around!

Usually my mom watches mine and vice versa when we travel. Once I did use a very nice boarding facility near me called Wee Tuck'em Inn. This is not a typical boardng place -- you can really have your pups spoiled there. I had two of mine stay together in a "toddler room with a view" -- It had a toddler bed, a big window to see outside, and still lots of room to play and have their food and water bowls. They get 6 outside walks a day and because they are cute -- even more attention than normal. :) They even had TV rooms if desired. I was impressed at how clean they were and the way they required proof of shots and a recent vet visit. Larger dogs were kept in a separate area and the little rooms were secure anyway so I did not worry about other dogs getting to mine. They would provide a premium food or you could leave your own, which I did. Everything was logged so I could see at what time they ate and went outside. They groomed mine while they were there too so it sort of saved a trip. This place got high praise from my vet and a couple of other pet owners I know. So, you can find some nice places that will take good care of your little ones. Just make sure to make an unannouced visit to check them out thoroughly. I read about some that even have live webcams so you can check in on your pets whenever you want. I would have really appreciated that cause I called them every day checking in.

Mine stay with Grandpa (my dad). Tater loves it. He gets everything he doesn't get at home...loads of treats for no reason, people food, and sleeps in their bed. In fact, I am surprised he wants to come home with me when I return!! I am still nervous the whole time and call every day if not multiple times a day, but everything is always good!

Gigi comes with us, even on our 13 hour long road trips. She's a great traveler, air planes or cars. We always stay in Marriot hotels(most of them are pet friendly.) I wouldn't dare leave my baby with someone, she doesn't even go to the groomers, I've learned how to groom her myself. She's my baby. :)

Typically we take her with us, but we have left her at a local vet clinic that has boarding. However, our problem has been that we have had about an hour window of opportunity to pick her up if we come home on the weekend. Otherwise we have to leave her another night and pick her up the next day. I think we will try Petsmart next time, if we really need to leave her. We took her to a place in Minneapolis last year when we went to my daughter's wedding there, but I really don't think it was a place that Sophie liked.:(

I've left Jackson twice now for a span of 4 days each time and I left him with my family. :) I feel more comfortable doing so. If it ever came to where my family couldn't watch him... I would definitely hire someone to come over the house and spend as much time with him as he could where he's comfortable. I would definitely have to trust the person. He's my baby and I want nothing but the best for him! :)

Mine stay with a variety of "family" members depending on my trip normally Ebony normally stays with her nanny, but last time i had to go away she stayed with my cousins mother in law, his brother in law is only 14 and is disabled so having Ebony there was a boost he walked her 4 times a day and did everything for her, now he has problems with his legs and hates walking so it worked out well. I have got a 10 wk trip pending and the situation at the moment is she either stays with nanny or she is is going to stay with a friend of mine, but its not very often i actually have to leave her
