9 wks old - Taped ears for 3 days, were standing perfect, now floppy again..Help =) Hi, thank you all for your advice on taping Bella's ears. I taped them using the Dr Scholls Moleskin tape and scotch tape. I left it on for about 3 days and when I took it all off, they stood straight up. I'd also shaved the hair off the top 2/3rds of her ears before taping. The tape has been off for 4 days and today, the ears are floppy again. Should I re-tape them? Please let me know. I love her ears any way but would love to have them stand. I also have read where the ears can be floppy again while teething (she's 9 weeks) - but will they come back up? Thank you so much for your help! This is our first Yorkie!! She's ROTTEN!! |
Yes retape them. Most tape 3 days...leave down 1...and tape again. |
Oh, thank you very much! How long did you have to do this? I appreciate your help so much! |
hi there , sorry if i am asking in the wrong bit, but i have a little yorkie at ten weeks, when should u tepe the ears? and how would i go about doing this? thanku..x |
I have to wonder if at 9 weeks of age you aren't still just fighting Puppy Ears. Gracie Ruth and Yogi's both didn't stay completely up until they were over 12 weeks old. And even then they'd flop a little during teething. |
Some ears are more stubborn than others...so how long varies. You could tape them...and leave them untaped until you see them going back down...then re-tape. Sometimes they go down while teething and then come back up on their own. Make sure you keep them shaved and the edges trimmed...that helps a great deal. |

Isla is 10 months and she had really floppy ears till she was about 5 months when I trimmed them. All of a sudden they perked up! Now that she's older and I haven't trimmed them for awhile, the right one fell down. Two weeks later the other fell. I trimmed them but they still aren't going up. I think her ear leather is just really thick, for one, and it has always been a battle. And two, she has a cottony coat, so her hair is heavier, which also combats the problem. She's cute either way, but I was curious as to why they didn't come back up after trimmed. Maybe it's against the genes for some??? |

I mean, adds to the problem. |
I was concerned about the ears as well I really wanted them to stand up. I shaved Pebbles ears and they came up on there own. After her needle one ear flopped again, but again it went back up on it's own. So Pebbles ears are now up again. I think if you keep them shaved and not heavy with hair they will probably go up on their own. At least that is been working for me and Pebbles. I find late at night when she is tired her one ear will flop, but the next morning they are up again. Pebbles will be 4 months on the 4 of May. |
I had to retape Lola's ears and now they are standing.. |
Suzi's ears stayed floppy for the longest time! Then she went through the stage where one ear was up and one ear was down.. Around 5 months old or so, Suzi had her first professional groom, and finally came out with ears standing all the way up :D Since then, there have be no problems . |
Our Bella was a couple months old when we started getting concerned about her ears standing. We asked the vet about it and believe it or not she recommended a practice wich is used for larger dogs. She said to put a tampon in each ear and tape it up....lol.That is when I found a link on the net about just tapping. We tapped Bella's ears for about a month, changing the tape once a week. The info that we had never mentioned anything about keeping the hair trimmed to lighten the ears.Needless to say when we removed the tape for the final time her ears were definitely standing and appeared to be about twice as long as they should be(time for a hair cut).In my opinion the tape needs to stay on for more than just a couple of days to be helpful. The vet told us that we only had about a 20% chance of her ears staying up...glad she was wrong! Bella is almost 2 years old now and her ears are standing just fine.I hope some of my mindless babbling has helped. Bella's Dad Jeff |

I didn't know anything about taping their ears until recently. Roxy's came up on their own in that 4-5 mo age range. First one then the other followed. I was kinda disappointed when the second one came up, as I thought she looked just too cute with one down. : ) |
