No leash -- use a harness!! Our last Yorkie had tracheal collapse and I think it happened because we only used a collar when we walked him. He would sometimes pull and I never realized this could hurt him. Poor baby sounded pathetic when he wheezed and hacked and coughed. Now on Brady we use a soft harness that looks like a vest. |
I read that would happen so we have always used a harness with rocco. There are many good ones out there that I have to keep buying cause the little goober has chewed up two harnesses and two collars so far, lo. Hope you little one is all better. |
tracheal collapse is a gentic disorder and while I am sure that a collar adds to the stress, it dosn't cause it per-say. Yes, I believe harnesses are th better way to go! I use one that is called a Roman harness, the closure device is located over the shoulders which takes the strain off of the neck. Lupine as well as other brands have that as a choice. |
Thank god for this site as I was using a collar until someone said on here not to and now its harness all the way for us. |
I recently heard that Therapy Dog United requires neck collars for their testing and visits. At least, that's one one person who went through their testing was told. She informed the tester of Yorkie trachea issues, and they said nope, all their therapy dogs must wear a neck collar. I was stunned. Delta Society allowed me to test with Eddie with a harness, and he did just fine. Why should they care with a little dog? It's not as though you can't control them with a harness. And if the dog doesn't perform to their standards, they don't have to pass him or her. Has anyone else had experience with that group? Here's their site, Therapy Dogs United | Home Page. I want to write them and try to show them the error of their ways. |
Okay, don't laugh. I too need some advice. Coco is only 5.5lbs. I am aware of her trachea so I have never used a collar. She only wears a harness. She is my first dog, but I am so afraid of her trachea that I don't even put a collar on her with a tag. Some people have told me to use a cat one. Does everyones furbaby wear a colllar? |
harness abbey wears a neck collar but I have also have a "cat" harness that Im going to put on her..she hacks and I know its from pulling on the neck collar |
Lorraine - I'm so sorry this happened to you. Is your baby doing better now? Since my baby's a rescue I don't know his genetic history so I've always used a harness or head collar on him. That is all thanks to this site from reading others warnings like your's. Thank you for sharing. :D Alaskayorkie - I'm sorry that the Therapy Dogs did that to your friend. I agree it sounds so unfair. I can't understand what the difference is. I agree they should have tested as is and if they didn't think it passed then don't pass it. Cindy - We'd never laugh at you for a question. I myself have purchased several cat collars for my babies as they are safe because they break free from any hangups the pup may get caught on. I do wear a collar with tags on my dogs most of the time. I take them off at night time so they can rest comfortably as I don't wear necklaces to bed so why should I make them ;) I've seen many postings on here where a yorkie ran out the door and is never seen again. I want my guys tags displayed so they can be returned asap, so that's why I do it. Hope this helps. |

If not, I'm going to follow up with AKC myself. Seems like a ridiculous rule to require a Yorkie with potential neck problems to wear a leash attached to a collar. |
I wrote about the harness but we use that whenever we have a leash on Brady. Otherwise he wears his collar with the tags all the time. I've heard pros and cons about that -- they might get the collar caught on something but Brady's isn't real loose and no one ever tugs him by the collar. Even though he is micro chipped I still want him to have his tags on. |
Therapy Dogs United testing requirements On behalf of Therapy Dogs United, Inc., in Erie PA - I would like to clear up this confusion. Our agency subscribes to the national testing standard as administered by the AKC for their Canine Good Citizen test. Passing this test counts for one-half of our therapy dog evaluation. It is the AKC's directive that we test all dogs on what they deem an appropriate collar, which is a flat buckle collar. We are unable to deviate from their testing standards. However, we did directly ask the AKC for their policy when a medical condition may pose a danger to a dog during the testing process. Their response is in quotes below: “Owner states Vet will not allow dog to wear collar. If the dog has an extreme medical condition and the owner is unable to participate using the collars listed, the AKC needs a signed statement from the Veterinarian (on their letterhead) explaining the medical condition. This can be provided to the AKC CGC testing official at the time of testing. The statement needs to include verification that the dog’s medical condition is so severe that he/she is not medically able to use a thin slip lead for a period of about 10 minutes (the estimated time it takes to complete the Canine Good Citizen Test). The AKC believes that a dog trained and ready for the CGC test will not pull or put pressure on the trachea. If the dog’s medical condition is verified, and it is suggested by a professional Veterinarian to forgo the approved collars, the Canine Good Citizen test can be given in the harness. However, absolutely no pulling on the harness is permitted, and will be grounds for failure.” Furthermore, TDU does NOT require a dog be testing on a flat buckle colar during the second half of our therapy dog evaluation. Certified dogs are also allowed to wear a harness during scheduled visits.
