Oliver has always gotten along well w/ the cats he's encountered, whether on their territory or his. (One exception, when a "host" cat took offense and corner O behind the toilet in her family's powder room!) Once I asked our vet about getting a cat and the effect of that on Oliver. This was probably when O was about 5. Vet predicted that it could work out really well if we got a young kitten. That way, he said, Oliver could help raise the kitten. We never got the kitten, for a variety of reasons, but our vet's advice has always been A #1 ... so under other circs I'd be willing to go for it. |
Getting new kitten Tuesday. Need advice! We have an 8 month old yorkie male. We are getting a new kitten on Tuesday. I hope everything goes well. Riley loves my sister's cats. I am hoping we have an advantage because Riley has actually met the kittens when our friend puppy sat him while we were away and he was gentle and loved them. She also has a yorkie so the kittens have been exposed to dogs almost daily since they were born. We are hoping for a smooth addition. I can't wait to see them together!! We are just hoping it goes well for all parties involved. My main concern is keeping their food separated. I've heard that kitten food is bad for puppies and vice versa. Any suggestions? Thanks you everyone's suggestions and time. |
1 Attachment(s) We have a Yorkie and a cat. They have the best time together. I have done it both ways. Previously, I had another yorkie, Sunny and then added a cat. The dog raised the cat and it worked great. Now this time, I had the cat first and then added the yorkie. Again, it worked great. They are the best of friends. The cats have always been very young. I have never tried it with an adults. Here is Ginger and Pepper ..... |
yorkies and cats We have just acquired a 5 month old calico cat. Bobo, our yorkie mix, is 2 and MOSTLY wants to play with the cat. They chase each other and generally have a noisy good time. The only problem occurs when someone is giving the cat attention --- Bobo goes ballistic, starts barking and jumping. He doesn't want to share the spotlight. I thought about getting a puppy at some point but now I am thinking twice about that based on his reaction. |
My boys (cats), Sylvester age seven and Joey age one, didn't take to Honey Bear at first when she came home Mother's Day weekend. Honey Bear was very curious and wanted to play. Sylvester has been around a dog before. When I got him as a kitten, my German Shepherd Nova was still with us. It has taken a little while.....now they get along great. Each passing day I see how Sylvester and HB get closer. They play together and wrestle. Joey is the scardy cat, afraid of every little noise and anything new. He will play with her but not to the extent as Sylvester. She likes to chase the cats around the house and they like to sit up high where she can't get to them. They wave their tails taunting her! So cute! I hope it works out for you. It is so adorable to see all my babies get along! Sometimes my hubby and I wake up and we have Honey Bear and if not both, than at least one of the boys in our bed! |
With my first yorkie Bo we had a cat Biscuit, and they got on fine. However it hasn't been quite so smooth with Lizzie my rescue cat whom we got from a sanctuary where she was deposited pregnant, we have no idea how old she is and was probably quite happy being an only cat- apparently her sister was taken in at the same time also pregnant-, then when Alfie arrived she was very put out and didn't like him at all. So immidiatly they got off on the wrong foot, The more I gain controle over Alfie the easier it gets but Lizzie spends most of her time high up or up stairs. Its not so bad with Rosie as she is more afraid of Liz and tends to avoid her occasionly trying to get her to play' no luck so far though. |
I have three cats and two yorkies. The oldest cat which is ten loves dogs! He has always been around dogs. They play like crazy. The two older girl cats do not like dogs, because they were never around them. I say get a young kitten. You can get them around 8 weeks I think and they should be fine. It is much easier to learn things and cope when you are smaller. I am sure they will be buds in no time! |
How do I get my yorkie Emmett to tolerate this stray kitten we found? My fiance loves cats, and I couldn't say no. I have had the kitten living outside in an x-pen until we can have it vaccinated, then it can come in the house. I guess. But when I go to tend to the kitten Emmett flips out, he can't stand the kitten. Today I tried to introduce them more by showing Emmet the kitten through the door and he tried to snap at the kitten. Is there any way to stop this??? I am not a cat person, and I guess neither is Emmett, lol. Any help? |
1 Attachment(s) I'd rather not live with a cat and Jackson, lol. My dad has two cats and I go over there regularly with Jackson but he still just loves to chase them occasionally. It's just an annoyance. However, he's gotten MUCH better!! He's 9 mo. old now so maybe it's just coming with age. He doesn't really mind them now. He actually laid with the cat the other day, I was absolutely amazed. So some dogs just like 'em, some don't, and some grow out of the chasing cat phase, I guess. |
Cats My Zekie loves cats and has several that he plays with when he gets the chance. I think I would go to your local animal shelter and get a cat about the same age as your dog and one that is already used to dogs. |
I have 5 Siamese cats and never had troubles . |
OMG!! Those pictures are ADORABLE!!! Now to the OP...I have a 22lb Maine Coon...He was here loooong before the girls got here...They don't like him...AT ALL...For the most part they just tolerate him but, if he goes near their food they snap at him....if he jumps in the window knocks something down and he say his name the snap at him....GOD FORBID if he try to pick him up!! He is very VERY tolerant of the girls...And MUCH bigger...he could do alot of damage if he wanted to...and he has claws...I leave them alone during the day when we are working...and they are fine...it only seems to be when we are home...jealousy maybe?? I don't know...I am very surprised they don't get along with him...he was here years before they came along. |
