Does your Yorkie bark a lot? Im somewhat new to this forum so im sure this has been discussed before, but im just curious..Do your Yorkies bark excessively? Zoey just turned a year old last month and shes been barking ever since she was little. Over all she is pretty well behaved, but she barks sooo much. She will go crazy over the slightest sound or movement or if we are talking to loud. When i tell her to stop and say no she never listens. Is this a trait of yorkies? or is she an exception? She is starting dog obedience classes on monday...hopefully it will help. |
I have read that they tend to bark alot but I really think that it varies from dog to dog. My Missy hardly ever barks. When she does bark, it's just once or twice and then she will stop without me telling her to. We have a busy home with 3 children, 2 dogs and 2 adults. She's just a quiet one I guess. I'm lucky :) |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk! I'm sorry, I don't have the answer to your question as the 3 Yorkies I have had, have not been barkers. That's not to say that was normal. I just never thought much about it. Sounds like you're little one is vocal.:) The one I have now rarely barks. A couple of times a guy came walking into our yard holding something in their arms and she got very vocal until I picked her up. For some reason she doesn't like someone (a man??) walking toward her with something in the arms. I don't know what that's all about. Strange. Another time, I was walking her and we walked past a yard with a couple of those very large figures that people put in the yard during holidays, the ones that are blown up, and she stopped to stare at them then started barking like she was quite upset. I picked her up and kept on walking and she quit. I had to take a different route home. Go figure. |
Hi Zoeys Mom & Zoey! :wavey: :welcome4: :yorkiesar My Gracie Ruth (15 months old) is the "alerter" of our gang. She will let you know if she's heard a 'dangerous' sound, even if it's 5 street away. :p She'll also tattle on the other 2, if they are doing something she thinks is wrong. She sasses back when scolded and is basically very vocal with all types of noises about nearly everything. She's my talker, that's for sure. I find that a touch on her body or a gentle tug on her beard along with a Quit command has worked to get her refocused. Mostly now, just the command will get her to stop barking. Then she will come to me grumbling and yammering the whole way. You can just hear her saying, "But Momma! Didn't you hear that? I heard it. There's danger and I was just helping you keep us all safe." :rolleyes: Just keep after her, be consistent in your correction and she'll probably get better. But I think it's just in some of them more to be vocal then others. |
Hi There!! I think it depends on the dog, some may say all of them are yappy or bark alot but from my own experience my Stormy is not yappy at ALL. She hardly ever barks unless there is a knock at the door or if we are at my moms house and ALL the dogs get rallied up from seeing something outside, then she will join in. Besides that the lady underneath me in my Apartment building didn't even know I had a dog til the other day when she saw us outside and I've had Stormy for about 7 months now! :p My moms yorkie on the other hand, barks pretty often at anything lol |
Laci only barks at weird noises or strangers.. One night my daughter got up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom she never usually does this and Laci woke right up and jumped on my head and growled and barked, I dont think that is a bad thing I do NOT let her bark when people come in the house , I tell her NO and she willl stop! |
Apple only barks when the door bell rings, or someone knocks on the door...Other than that, she rarely barks...I probably bark more than Apple...lol... Maggie & Apple:aimeeyork xoxox |

I like to call Jackson an "alerter!" Because he's not really a barker, per say. He doesn't bark at dogs passing by (unless my mom's dog starts it... then he will just copy her, unknowing to what he's barking at) But, he will do the whole "woof woof woof woof woof woof" really quickly if someone opens my bedroom door while he's sleeping, he barks when someone comes in the front door but it stops after 4 or 5 barks. And immediately I just say "Quiet!" and he usually listens. So, he's definitely not excessive but he's definitely a little watchdog when it's time to be. Which I really don't mind because what if someone seriously was intruding our house... that would come in handy! I really don't think he would be a barker if it wasn't for the other dogs he's been around and lived with. My dad's dog is an AWFUL barker so whenever we spend a few nights over there, he picks up on the habit, which I hate! But he will usually listen to me. |
We have two Yorkies and a Yorkie Poo. Wrigley hardly ever makes a peep! If she is really startled, she has this alerting bark that will scare you to death! So we know if she makes a noise, to come see what the heck is going on! Camden barks her head off in the yard, I think she thinks she is a guard dog! She runs from one side to another barking at anything and everyone! Crosley tends to bark quite a bit too and she has the high pitch bark that makes you want to scream! We keep a spray bottle with water and that helps alot with Crosley & Camden, we don't usually have to spray it anymore, they just see it and they tend to get quiet! Some use pennies in a can and shake it at them, but this scares two of ours, so we don't do that! |
Suzi barks only to alert us us when she hears noises from outside "danger" Sometimes , it is very early in the morning. However she is doing her job! She comes running back to me! as if to say, are we safe now? Trying to protect the family! She loves people, and I apreciate her efforts keeping us all safe. THere was an incident where police were in front of our apartment building with their light on one night. Suzi saw them through the window and went nuts. I had no idea, until she reacted. Again, protecting us. Yes, she was barking at the cops, but, they had a bad guy too. She is not a barker unless she senses there is a reason to be. :thumbup: |
Lilly is very vocal. Very, very vocal. It drives me nuts. We recently moved into an apartment in December (after living in a house for a year), so I give her a little slack but goodness. She barks at EVERY noise, sometimes even if there isn't a noise. Also, my boyfriend travels for work and when he's gone she has to protect me 100%, so it gets pretty bad. I've tried everything to get her to stop too. Telling her no, crating her, pennies in a can... rewarding her when she stops. Nothing has worked so far. :( |
sounds like a lot of people are fortunate enough to have a yorkie or two that aren't too yappy. Duke is a barker and I've been having a really difficult time trying to manage that. We are doing well with everything except the barking. He's 16 months old and would still bark at random people when we walk or at noises he hears from outside. I've tried the coins in the bottle, water spray, nothing has really work. I'm hoping with with consistent training, he'll learn or grow out of it. |
Lola had this problem for a while, and it drove me insane. I would tell her "no" and she'd just stare at me and yip yip yip some more. She never barked at noises, only when she wanted attention or didn't get what she wanted; usually this was to be taken out of her crate, carseat, playpen, or some other thing that separated me from her. The only thing that FINALLY worked was a spray bottle. When I first started using it she thought it was a game (I had it on mist... big mistake... make sure it's set to stream!), but when she would start barking excessively I would squirt her right in the chest once or twice. Eventually she learned that when I reached for the spray bottle I meant business, and she doesn't bark like that anymore, thank goodness. She only barks now when we're playing, which is fine with me! The key is to make them associate something negative with the barking. For her, ignoring her wasn't enough, she needed a physical negative thing to get her to stop. Give it a shot! Good luck! |

I have 3 yorkies and they only bark if they hear a noise but then they stop. I have A Sibarain Husky that is 8 and he's the one that gets my yorkies going. He hears the noise first. He jumps up to the window and them my yorkies start to bark. otherwise there quiet. good luck |
Tobie really doesn't bark alot unless someone is at the door or when he wants you to know that its time to play. But I was at this pet thing over the weekend and there was a cute little yorkie there that barked and barked and barked none stop. I think it just depends. |
My boys are pretty vocal. My Fletcher is really vocal with my boyfriend. He'll follow him around and when bf looks at him he'll bark and bark at him! Its like he's talking to him. My Dexter barks at noises, sometimes its just one or two barks and sometimes he'll join Fletcher in barking with NO clue what hes barking at. They will bark at ANYTHING that dares to move outside, including falling leaves. But if all is quiet and calm they are quiet and calm. I guess thats typical! |
My three yorks are ferocious barkers :thumbdown, they'll bark at a fly going by and it's very difficult to get them to stop, now my Shih Tzu is an angel and he'll only bark once or twice if someone comes to the door and then he just goes back to his business very satisfied that he's done his job. Now if only the other three would learn from him :rolleyes: |
Addie hardly ever barks, I guess I'm lucky. She only barks when she's sleepy or sleeping and hears a noise that she thinks isn't normal and it's only a quick bark (one or two). The only other time is when she's not getting her way and gets mad...she mostly growls at this time but every once in a while she'll bark once. By the way...she almost ALWAYS gets her way...SPOILED ROTTEN!!! |
I had to get in on this thread. Scooter, for the most part, is not much of a barker but when he goes out into the back yard he races as fast as he can so he can beat his "sister" Bitsy and he never, never, never fails to bark as he's running. We have a neighbor who is very crabby and she gets all twisted around when a dog barks so I'm out there saying shh and shaking the shaker can (he's afraid of it). He also absolutely hates the sand cranes who fly over the house. He will bark like crazy while running with his head up looking at the birds flying overhead. For those of you who have never seen a sand crane, it is one big bird. They are over 3 feet tall and are really loud. Luckily they are not aggressive so Scoots is in no danger from them but boy does he hate them. |
Tyke may be considered barking alot. Mostly he barks when the doorbell rings or someone knocks. He barks when we're playing and he barks when someone comes in the door ( that's if he's in the bedroom and he can't see) so he could be an alerter too.....lol which i'm glad i don't have to worry about somone driving up or coming in the house and me not know. So his barking doesn't bother me. we have to tone him down sometimes, but it's probably according to the dog too. |
Ben rarely ever barks. The only time he barks is when he is playing with his daddy and he growls with him. Other than he is pretty much a scaredy cat and when ever someones comes to the door he goes and hides, lol. |
Bella is like a lot of the other dogs on here.. shes an "alerter" only when the doorbell rings or she sees something strange.. that's when she barks. I like that though!:) I think its Cute:p |
I think it's territorial with Winston, he barks to alert us of a noise or something out of the ordinary at home or in the yard. But take this same barking dog away from his own territory, and you will never hear a peep from him...not at other dogs, people, cars, noises...nothing. A lot of people we meet thinks he has no voice...but I know better, I've heard it way to many times. He's actually kind of a snob or anti-social away from home....completely a different dog. |
Rocco NEVER barked unless we played ring-around-the-rosie with the girls. Now since we have moved here and there are dogs next door to us he barks more. He goes outside and pees on the fence where the neighbors dog is and starts barking, which gets the other dog to barking, which gets me to barking at them both! lol. Normal though he doesn't bark much at all. He is nice and quite for the most part. (the way I like it) |
Bree barks at everything including ants and it drives me crazy most of the time, but I love her to death. |
My Yorkie is one years old, and he does not bark a lot. He usually only barks when he plays with my other dog. Sometimes, he barks when he hears weird sounds. |
AprilLove really didn't let out much of a bark until she was about 5 months old. Then she explored her ability for a few months, lol She's over 3 now and rarely barks except when she wants (demands) something from me :D She will also bark at the others when they are playing, but that is about the only times she barks. |
