Question I put a deposit on a Yorkie pup on 3/28. I was sposed to pick Basil up on April 5th after coming back from a trip but when I came back and called the breeder, she said he did not seem well and his bm was black. She said she didn't want to send him home and stick us with a vet bill. I called every other day for a week to see if he was feeling better and ready to come home with me. Finally on Wednesday 4/15 I picked him up. He was very quiet and the breeder assured me it was because he was not used to being in her office area. I took him home and he drank water and ate a lil bit. He was very quiet and only had small bm once yesterday. Then he was dead this morning. How should I handle this with breeder? |
oh my goodness, thats terrible. I guess the first thing you have to do is phone the breeder and tell her and what you do next will depend on the breeders response. Im so sorry...how sad and what an awful shock for you. |
Yes it was...and I am still devastated...:( I am almost 40 and I cried like a baby! |
I'm so sorry:cry: Did the breeder ever say what was wrong with him? Did he go to the vets? I sure hope that the breeder does the right thing. |
Oh, I am so sorry, I can't imagine how hard this must be to go through. Did you sign any type of contract? When we bought Oscar, the breeder had us sign a contract that among other things stated that if the dog died of an illness within 5 years we would be reimbursed or given a new dog. Hopefully the breeder will do the right thing and replace the dog or give you your money back. |
I'm very sorry you lost your baby! As a breeder myself, I would be equally devastated. I am sure your breeder will make it right with you.. I am hoping you signed a health guarantee. Let us know how everything works out & again, so sorry about your loss! |

I am so sorry that you have been put through this needlessly the breeder had to know this puppy was not well, I on occasion have babies to sell but would not think of letting one go that was sick. she should do the right thing and give you a full refund this kind of deal is why good breeders with healthy babies sometimes get labeled along with the bad Betty & Micah my love:aimeeyork |
OMG, how awful! I am so sorry for your loss!! :( RIP sweet Basil! I hope the breeder makes it right for you, call her as soon as you can to tell her. |
Oh, dear! What a horrible experience for you! Contact the breeder right away and let her know what happened. Hopefully she'll be professional and refund your money right away. Do not accept a "replacement" puppy from this breeder! You don't want to go through the same thing twice. Also, don't bury the puppy in case a necropsy needs to be done. I'd suggest calling your vet and asking if they could keep the puppy there until this is worked out. |
What a horrible experience for you! I am so sorry to hear of your loss. You didn't even have time to get a wellness check from the vet, did you? If you do not have a contract and the breeder doesn't do the right thing, you may want an autopsy done. I know absolutely nothing about the medical side of anything but the first thing that came to my mind was internal bleeding. Again, I am so terribly sorry for your tragedy when it should have been such a joyful time in your home. |
Oh, no! I am so sorry for your loss! |
I am so sorry for your loss, that is awful. |
Oh my goodness-how dreadful! Poor little thing. I'm so sorry! |
I'm so sorry! That's terrible. I hope the breeder works with you. |
OMG!!!!! Did you call the breeder yet?? What did they say??? I'm sooooooo sorry how tragic!!!!! Please keep us up to date on what is going on!!! |
Oh dear , I am very sorry you lost Basil. I believe the breeder placed you in this terrible position though. Possibly not on purpose though. However, I agree that you need to contact the breeder ASAP, and let her know what happened to Basil. You only had him for 2 days. I believe he was extremely ill when you brought him. I also think it would be a good idea to take him to get a examined /nercrospy and find out exactly what took the life of Basil. I would not bring home a new puppy until you know what caused the death of Basil. Because you run the risk of anther puppy being exposed the the same illness as Basil. Example, Parvo. I hope the breeder will be good to you, and not give you a hard time, after what has happened. IMO, I hope that she gives you all of your money including the deposit back, than I'd be looking for a reputable breeder. Going through the AKC channel. |
This is terrible. I am so sorry that you had to go through that. I really hope that the breeder makes things right with you. Good Luck. |
How awful, I feel so sad for the puppy and you. Please let us know what the breeder has said, or has to say when you can. I would be requesting a refund not a replacement puppy, seems to coincidental that the puppy was to sick to leave the breeders care and then passed away the next day. If the breeder will only offer a replacement pup I would request all the paperwork from her vet diagnosing the puppies illness, if he was ill enough to not go to his new home that I would expect that he seen a vet |
So sorry that this happened - please keep us posted. |
I am so sorry for your loss. I can totally understand being so upset. This is such a sad thing to happen as it sounded like your breeder was trying to do the right thing with keeping him when she noticed he was ill. Did she say if she took him to the vet. Oh, sweetie, my heart breaks for you both. (((((((((Hugs))))))))) |
Oh my! I am so sorry for your loss. Please make sure you take care of yourself during this time. |
My sympathy to you, how heartbreaking...Have you talked to the breeder yet? If not, do so immediately...ask for her vets records on your pup. A refund is in order, I'd also suggest not to accept a replacement. Good luck...this is so very sad. |

First thing, check your sales contract. Did you get a health guarantee? Second, call the breeder. She may do right by you and return your money even if there is no contract, if she is a decent person. If she returns your money, that would end it for me with this breeder. I would find another puppy from another breeder. If she does not give your money back, first contact a vet and ask about documenting the death and maybe performing an exam to see if cause of death is obvious. Not sure of $$ for a full autopsy. Tell him about the black BM the puppy just recently had. Also check with your state law. Florida where I live has a very good Pet Lemon Law. It protects the buyer very well. They have 14 days to document infectious disease and up to a year to document hereditary disease or conditions. The buyer can demand a refund or replacement PLUS be reimbursed for vet expenses up to the price of the dog. I think I agree with the previous poster that said they would not want another pet from this breeder. I do not know if Ohio has a similar law or not. But small claims court could be an option even if there is no law in place. Document everything. From the first time you put down the deposit and each phone call about the dog being sick, to picking up the puppy, it's death, and every subsequent conversation. Write down who, what, where and when. I know it is difficult to think of the legal angles when you are still mourning the loss of such a tiny innocent puppy. But, you have to think of the big picture. You are standing up for yourself, your family, and all the puppies and families this breeder is responsible for after this too. Hopefully, she is a good honest person who just made a poor judgement call when she let a puppy so recently ill go to a new home. If that is the case, you should have your money back very soon. |
I am so sorry for the loss of your little Basil!!:littleang:tinyheart:rbyorkie::tinyheart I hope the Breeder will give you your $$ back. I would'nt take another one of her pups in fear of it happening again! I hope she makes this right for both of your sakes!! You're in my Thoughts and Prayers...:hands::hands: R.I.P. Basil...:rip::angelyork |
