I had wondered about the cow hooves and whether or not they splinter easily. |
I was under the impression that "real bones" were bad for them since they splinter, specially if they've been boiled.I would love to give something really different to Max, since we always have Nylabone in hand. Do I get them at the grocery store, one with a meat department? What do I ask for? If I have to choose, what do I look for? Once at home, how long do I boil it? Should I worry about splinters?... |
ha...I knew I had more questions..do they go around the house withthe bone (like bulisticks)?does the bone smell, does it get sticky? |

If you go to the grocery store ask the meat department for some soup bones. I usually pick out the packages with alot of maro and go by the size of the bone. I have 4 dogs (1 large, 1 med and 2 small) so I get all sizes. I usually spend a couple of dollars on 1 package. I put a sleeping bag down for them to eat them on until the maro is out, then they are pretty clean toys. I dont find that they smell at all. I hope this helps you. |
I've always bought my "real" bones from a pet store, pre-boiled.:) They have never splintered, never smelled, never gotten sticky. They last forever too. |

Buddy does the samething. He's like a buzz saw. The only thing he is allowed to have are natural bones. You can fill them with cheese, peanut butter or whatever. They do not splinter. I have even put them in the dish washer from time to time. He chews so hard he has chewed ridges around them. There's not a thing on the market that I trust. Natural Bones are the way to go. No fear of choking with them. I buy them in the pet store. Already sanitized. Since we live in a condo I don't but the ones in the grocery store. They are yukky so they should be chewed outdoors and we don't have a yard. I know he would love those. |

Snickers still loves his nylabone and orka, he has made dents into both of these but never has he chewed out chunks of them so they work for us but I do notice he gets kinda bored with them. The lady working at Petco told me about the all natura,l small, sanitized bone, but for some reason I didn't believe her (go figure--I don't trust anyone but you guys;)) but maybe we will try one. Especially since Snick has 1 baby canine left that he needs out so maybe the bone will help???? Anyone opposed to the small, natura,l uncooked, santized, bones from the pet supplky store???? Do they chip off? Digestible? Snick eats bone bits in his raw food, but I'm not sure.... |
Are you guys all totally against rawhide chewies? My Zoey (1 year old) came to us complete with several of them amongst her other toys and I've let her keep them, because she loves them so. Are they a total nono? |
Rawhides and SUPER dangerous for Yorkies...a small but can break off and get stuck in their throat...too many fatal incidents....be VERY careful...I would not risk it... |

Not only can a piece of rawhide break off and get lodged in the throat or stomach they also swell up when wet and could cause a blockage. Nylabones when chewed can break or small pieces like the size of a grain of salt (tells you on the package) SHOULD pass. But when these particales don't pass they can cause damage to the intestines, stomach and bowel track. They are likes little slivers of glass. I have said this in the past several times and I hate repeating myself but we get newbies all the time. Buddy was hospitalized for 4 days due to this. Please find another way to relieve the need for chewing like a natural bone. You will be safe and worry free. |
I just got home from the pet store. I saw the bleached bones like what you show in your link but they were all kinda big looking so I didn't get one of those yet. I got a smaller beef bone by Merrick that is brown and kinda basted looking and it had some kind of marrow or something in the center. It is about the same size as his kong minus the smallest end section of the Kong (if that makes sense). Reggie has already licked out whatever was on the inside as it was soft and mushy and now he is carrying the bone around. I think he likes it! |
