ooppss ooppss, forgot, be careful of wet food. Yorkies can have teeth and gum problems. Just remember, wet food tends to get into the gums and cause some infection after time, hard food not so. Hard food also tends to scrap some tartar off the teeth. I only gave Jemma a 1/2 tsp of wet with dry when I first took her home. Just to get her to eat and avoid hypoglycemia. After a week she has been on dry since. And when I come to think of it, sometimes she doesn't always eat a full 1/2 cup a day. But I don't do anything. I toss it up to just one of those days. It's not often. It ain't broke, so I ain't fixing, lol Hope this helped a little to ease your fears! Carol |
Thanks Carol, My exact thoughts regarding the wet food...All my life, and it's been a long one lol, I've felt dogs were better off w/dry food, because of their teeth...However, my cat, who is 11 yrs. old, has always been on dry food, and I'm fixin' to fork out a ton of money to have his teeth cleaned and 6 extractions... (about $800)...They say, normally, it is cats w/fiv or feline luekemia who get these bad teeth, of which he's been tested, and has neither...Just somewhere down the line, and it could be down the street (people feeding him wet food), he's developed this mouth full of problems...He's a huge, beautiful long haired white cat, that ppl just tend to gravitate towards...He's always been an indoor/outdoor cat, so I have little control over what he eats, and he's huge (neutured male)...but, anyway, sorry to get off on my cat (Wilson), and thanks for all the good advice... Roxy is just over 5 months and also a picky eater. Sometimes she loves her food and sometimes she sniffs it and looks at me as if to say "Can't I have some of your dinner instead?":D She will always go back to it when she's hungry enough though. It's nice to change it up a bit for her too, she goes mad for milk but can only handle a small bit so if she's being really fussy I coat all her kibble in milk and she cleans the bowl. |
The wet food vs. dry food is a debatable area but it has not been solidly proven that dry is better than wet. Their teeth need to be brushed either way. Besides, wet is less processed and the moisture is good for them. :) |
