He really bit me!
 

I can't believe it! Buddy bit me because I did not share my treat with him:mad: This dog is more a spoiled brat than a dog. He really got me good.
Every night around 8:00pm Bud and I get a treat. I gave him a chicken
stick and I took some crackers with a cup of tea.
I'll be honest and say I usually share with him but for some reason
I didn't this time. He ate his treat and came running down the hall jumping
on top of me laying along my left side on the recliner watching me eat
my snack. I finished, ignoring him. I was watching TV and looked down
at him and could tell immediately he was pissed! Within a split second I
pulled the down comforter up in front of me just as he lunged forward:eek:
I could tell by the look in his eyes he was going to come at me.
He chomped down and got my hand, between the thumb and pointer on
the right hand. I was in shock for a second and then realized the awful
pain in my hand. I took care of my hand and put his butt in the kitchen
with the gate up. For the first time in 5yrs he slept alone and never
made a peep all night long. I know he knew what he did was so wrong.
My own dog bit me because I didn't share with him. That's plain nut's.
No one would belive it but it's true. He's not 4lbs either, he's 16lbs.
I have done extensive training with him over the years and he's so
good but now he has thrown me for yet another loop!
He's off my s*it list now but he so dissapointed me:(

So sorry! I don't have any advice....but, good luck with Buddy! They do seem to throw us for a loop when we least expect it!

Times like this it reminds us that our dogs are animals and we tend to think of them as too human sometimes.

I'm sorry about Buddy! It was probably just a one-time thing but it still just shocks you when they do something like that!

Carol I am so sorry, just keep letting him know your boss, my peanut is 12 and he will bite me if I try to trim his nails, I know what you mean about being in shock, I have had him since a baby and after all these years, he will go after me if I try to cut his nails, it shocks me every time. I hope your cut will be okay. Big hugs..:(

This happened last Thurs night and I just couldn't bring myself to post it.
I felt so embarrased by it for some reason. I keep forgetting Buddy is
a dog. My hand is ok. One part has already healed and the second
tooth left a blood blister which is going down. I am now traininig him
to sit outside the family room door while I eat my snack! His loss my
gain. I get to eat more. He's doing good, just lays down with a look
of sadness. I can't let that get to me. It's hard being the boss all
the time.

I feel your pain.

For the first time in 13 years, Squirt bit me.

He doesn't like to go out in the morning, & usually growls. Yesterday, I was petting him under the chin to calm him. He was passive. When I went to attach his leash, he bit. Ouch. Two punctures below the thumb, & pain.

But he didn't bite you because you weren't sharing really

This sounds like a form of food possession ... and it's a progressive behavior pattern in dogs so be careful

Make sure that your pup is good with you touching his food taking his bowl away and allowing you to give and take away bones from him

If not you need to get him trained and fast
Biting is never something to be brushed aside

grrrrrrr, sorry, but I would have grabbed him by the skin behind his neck and put the fear in him so fast. lol

Aw, :thumbdown. So sorry about him biting you! Sounds like you are doing the right thing. I never let Baxter near me when I eat... well, I try not to. :rolleyes: I read a post on here once about a woman who had her Yorkie trained SO well... the Yorkie would sit like five feet away while the woman would eat her food, and when she was done, the Yorkie would come over. I want to teach Baxter that... :animal36

I hope your finger is better today. I guess we can really never trust
our beloved pet's. It's important to remember they are dog's first
and our babies second. Hard to do huh?

You need to put yourself back in charge of the resources (treats) so that will never ever happen again! A dog bite is a very serious matter.

Believe me, I'm aware of food aggression. Been there, done that and thought
it was behind us. I have made Buddy sit before feeding him and wait until
I release him. I mix his food with my bare hands daily. He shares everything
with me. It's been years doing this to prevent what did happen. I even
mix his food 1/2 way threw with my hands.
There are only two times that I won't interupt him. When he is eating
a cheese bone or a peanut butter bone. I give him the room he needs
at this time or yes he will bite me. I have taken things away forever
knowing these specific things will make him guard. IT's in him and I know
it ,therefore I prevent him from getting into that mode by taking away
the things that can cause it.
I guess you can't prevent everything when you don't know it's coming
but you can prevent the action that causes it so that's what I'll do
from here on.

LOL your right but you really can't use that tatic with a 16lb dog!
It don't work, I don't have the strength to hold him from that angle
and he would turn around and bite for sure.

He is an attention seeker by all means. I have trained him to the hilt
over the years but looks like I need to do some fine tuning to myself.
I have always said from day one, I never new a dog could be so smart!
Truer words have never been spoken.
I raised three children and two dogs in the past. All put together has
not demaned the attention this one 16lber does. He's so good, really
he is and just so smart. It's frustrating to me that this happened.
It just never ends.

Awww! Please, don't feel embarrassed to post this (or any problems) on here, we are all here to support and learn from each other. I'm so sorry your baby bit you. I'm glad to see that you went back to not letting him have freedom to jump up beside you while your eating! That was my first thought when I read your post. He's gained too much confidence in his control over you. You're doing wonderfully, keep up the good work. I agree that no matter how much you want to believe they are your "babies" they are dogs first and for most. Hope all goes well from here on. Glad you're healing.

Completely your fault, you know that you were supposed to share your treats with Buddy and you didn't, so you had it coming, he did not mean to bite you, it was just a friendly reminder.LOL

I know your feelings are hurting more than your hand!

Does anyone besides me think that dogs can get headaches? Sometimes I swear my babies act like I do when I have a migraine. Maybe Buddy was having a bad day and was just grumpy enough to snap when he didn't get his way??

Anyway, you handled it well, you know he loves you, you are making sure it won't happen again and, knowing you, you have forgiven him. He's a lucky little (big?) guy to have you for his mommy.

OH BOY!! CAROL, i feel so bad. i dont know what i would do if lexi did that.
she does turn her nose up to me though sometimes....one day she did snap
at me.. i was in bed and my bf was there too and i dont know what happend, but she bit me so fast and as fast as she did that, my fist was in her face.
she didnt know what hit her and i didnt know how fast i was.. it wasnt hard believe me, but just the thought scared the heck outta her.. i couldn believe she did that to me.. , well i showed her who the boss was... .. she hasnt done it again,, yet.. so now if i show her my fist her ears go down or she shows her teeth, depending what the situation is.. never trust them..

ooohhh boy! Buddy!!!!! :( What a bummer that happened! Like you, I would be extremely shocked and disappointed if either of my dogs bit me. You really can see the anger or hurt in their eyes. My boys get really upset if my boyfriend is there in the morning and does not take them for a walk out front. The sadness in their eyes does me in! However at least (thankfully and for right now) they listen to their mommy and have NEVER snarled, growled, nipped, snapped or bit anyone. Its good you made him sleep alone for the night, even though it probably bothered you more than him. I hope he does not do that again. And I thought he was the SWEETEST boy on YT!!! (My 2 included! :))

But now you can add eating snacks on the couch when he's there into that category too
I realize that it's not easy when a dog shows this type of behavior
I had a Lhasa when I was young as a family dog that was food aggressive and it turned out that later we couldn't play with him when he had food or a bone
we couldn't brush him
or bathe him .... we had to have professionals do it
If you work with him enough until ghe will let you take his bone away from him then you can trust him again

I never thought about dogs and headaches. That is very interesting.
I wonder if they can get one. However, he was fine just mad at me

Yep, I certainly will add that to the list.
He's truly so good and well behaved and trained. I do know he has
guarding and food issues from the past. I guess they just linger
beneath the surfice never really going away. I let my guard down
and he knew that taking advantage of the situation.

As far as the bone, we trained for sometime for him to give it to me,
he acutally brings it to me daily. Only when it's stuffed with cheese
or peanut butter will he keep it for himself. He will bring it to me
if I"m sitting on the floor and do a dance in front of me with ears back
and tail tucked under. He tries but is not ready to really share it.
I'm no fool, I know the difference. I just keep encourging him.
Guarding is breed in them, it has to be. Nothing has ever happened
to him that would make him this way. Believe me, he has come
along way. We have trained each other well.

Aw, I'm so sorry! Thor has not bit me, but he's done other things that shocked me (run away when off leash), and it's a terrible feeling.

It's good that you are now making him sit outside while you eat, that was the first thing I was going to suggest. Maybe you can work some more with him with the cheese / pb bone. I would suggest only putting a little bit of stuffing in it, so he has to give it back to you for more.

You know, that's a great idea. I sure will give it a try.
