Trust me - my dog is highly taken care of. He's spoiled rotten and I wouldn't let him do half the things my mother's "farm" dog (the cockapoo) does. So, no, I'm not worried. The black labs that come down from the farm are the sweetest dogs ever. However, I never let Jackson outside unattended with those dogs out there. I made my post to put my point across how I feel and what level of "protectiveness" I'm in. lol. As I said, I'm the middle of being overprotective and being more laidback. He's also a bigger boy which makes it easier. If he was tinier, he would never be allowed outside without leash. |
What, me worry? Today I was walking Gus. I saw this little woman with a big dog. I assessed a friendly situation until the woman grabbed, & held onto a nearby sign post. Maybe the risk was her getting dragged by her "friendly" dog. The dog had the biggest mouth I've ever seen, & enough drool to fill a bath tub. He could have swallowed Gus without chewing. What, me worry? |
We have a no-leash law here and animal control does a good job of picking up loose dogs but everybody and his brother has a yard dog and I am always concerned one will get out. I won't even walk Chloe Primrose on one of those extended leashes out of the yard. I'm afraid I won't be able to "reel her in" fast enough if a dog comes out of nowhere. Yes, I worry but I would rather be a little over-protective than have injury to my dog. Keeping her on a leash obeys the law and keeps her safe. What else is there to say. |
I always worry. We live by a lake with a dam that gets lots of walkers and people who walk their dogs. Sophie loves to walk there, and that is the best place to walk. But sometimes there are people who have their dogs off leash. Once, a big dog came running at us, and I only had time to pull Sophie up by the leash. She was on a harness, and she was dangling there in mid-aire while I tried to protect myself and her. The owners of the other dog just shrugged it off. I was so mad.:mad: Now I don't go up there very often, and I feel sorry for Sophie, since it is only a block from our house. A block the other way is a very busy street. So I don't want her near there either. |

I don't let any of mine stray to far, and they are always on a leash when we are outside walking. I trust myself, I just don't trust anyone else. Paranoid, just a bit. But the old saying,"better safe then sorry" is one that I practice. Have a knife I carry on walks. 3 years ago got entangled by the babies in the middle of a busy intersection, someone had just opened the door to let their HUGE dog out to pee. It saw mine and came charging at us. Grabbed the little one and stepped in between mine and the horse, with two cars squealing to a stop. They got out of their cars to direct traffic and help me untangle and get the dog away. I always tell people; the leash is there not for control over your pet, but for the safety of your pet. :thumbup: |
yes i got attached when i was about 15 when i had my maltese he had a big mouth whenever he seen big dog's he barked and i had picked him up to shut up well this stray dog chased me into a bread store and they kicked me out and i went to hide by a gate thank god this guy came to help me i thought i was going to get killed and my dog would not shut up i was so mad lol but thank god my yorkies are friendly but i don't let them go up to a dog unless the owner says its to ok and the dog don't bite.. |
Yesterday I went to puppy socialization class with Laci, the class is for dogs under 20 pds , well her being a mear 2.8 lbs got me a little concerned, they have a dog trainer in the area to supervise and give you suggestions, well there was a bigger shizu and he kept coming toward her and wanted to play but kept trying to pounce on her, I was nervous and picked her up.. he came over to me and said BIG HUGE mistake, unless I felt her safety was at risk , which is wasnt both dogs were wagging thier tails, to NOT pick her up anymore, he said get on your knees, seperate the dogs with your body and pat my dog gently and say its OKAY, keeping the other dog away from her till it calms down, (we are not talking about an aggresive dog just a hyper one) and let her know that I am here to save you but dont be afraid, he did this 3 times with her and the s**tzu and eventually he played nicer with her. He told me even at a dog park or just walking dont pick her up just seperate them , get down to her level and teach her I am here to protect you but that the dog wont hurt her and she is fine on her own.... :rolleyes: |
Well done you. Its easier said then done though right,picking them up is meant to make them insecure, but when big doggie heads my way im sure Tia would say "thank-you mummy"lol:yorkietal |
I really feel like I'm over the top now. My husband laughs at me but Sadie stays on leash and nearby and also I carry pepper spray specifically designed for dogs. I bought it at my obedience class. I met someone who's Yorkie was killed in their own driveway by two usually "friendly" German Shepherds. They are just too small and you can't guarantee you can even get them picked up in time. I stay extremely aware of my surroundings when we walk. |
I have never (and will never!) let Meg off her leash while we are outside. There is just too much that could happen, and too quickly. It's a dangerous world out there, and Meg thinks she is a huge dog who can explore everything. Granted I live near a city, not out in the boondocks, but Meg is just too precious, so why take the risk. She loves to play with dogs of all sizes, but I will hold her if there is a big dog that I don't trust completely. Even if the big dog think he's playing, he could really hurt Meg! I'd rather deal with tangled leashes than have Meg off a leash. The thought of letting her off scares me to death. |
Always be on guard 1 Attachment(s) ipper....the dog then leaped into the air and grabbed my Zip by the head and shook him. The man commann]ded dog to releash and he did...poor Zip tumbling to the ground...it was awful. Luck for everyone concerned Zip was okay. Zip plays with two other Yorkie playmates for fun and tumble and loves his visits with them. |
